Church to apologize to Darwin

Published September 16th, 2008 by Bobby Henderson

The Church of England has decided to apologize to Darwin. Excerpt from The Telegraph:

The Church of England will concede in a statement that it was over-defensive and over-emotional in dismissing Darwin’s ideas. It will call “anti-evolutionary fervour” an “indictment” on the Church.

The apology, which has been written by the Rev Dr Malcolm Brown, the Church’s director of mission and public affairs, says that Christians, in their response to Darwin’s theory of natural selection, repeated the mistakes they made in doubting Galileo’s astronomy in the 17th century.

The statement will read:

Charles Darwin: 200 years from your birth, the Church of England owes you an apology for misunderstanding you and, by getting our first reaction wrong, encouraging others to misunderstand you still. We try to practise the old virtues of ‘faith seeking understanding’ and hope that makes some amends.

I guess it’s now time for the Hare Krishnas to apologize for their “overzealous” persecution of the first pirates.

This fills me with an overwhelming feeling of logic.

Why appologize? Christianity does these things over and over and over again – what’s the point? The next scientific discovery that challenges the bible will be met with the same moronic opposition. Ask your local creationist on his opinion on the theory of relativity – why do you even care what the uneducated thinks?

Hundreds of years too late for the family. The church and religion disgusts me.

Did you notice that the statement addresses Darwin as though he’s in the same room? I wonder if they said it loud enough for him to hear over the beer volcanoes…

Uh, in what sense do they mean they “misunderstood” Darwin? Evolution by natural selection implies that humans are not special, and were not specially created, but are absolutely equal branches on the same tree that contains all life. It was a correct understanding of that fact that upset the church.

If they are saying “we clearly see now that evolution allows for God and a special place for humanity,” then they are profoundly mistaken, and actually paying a huge disrespect to Darwin and his ideas by undermining their power.

…Of course, I’m merely playing devil’s advocate here. Darwin was a fool to deny our noodly creator.

That’s amazing. I’m not sure who Rev Dr Malcolm Brown is, but he seems a very rational person. Well done.
