I’d like to wish to Hungdaddy that it be touched By His Noodly Appendage.
His Noodlyness may have to get in line though :)) -

The phrase so beloved by chemists “ok - so imagine that it’s blue, it should be blue!” or “Yellow! NO - OK everyone, exit the lab NOW!” -

And a pretty long line it would be too. First there’s hungdaddys left hand touching himself. Then there’s his right hand. Then there’s his blow-up doll. Then there’s his hamster. The list goes on and on. -

@ DPG - “First there’s hungdaddys left hand touching himself. Then there’s his right hand. Then there’s his blow-up doll. Then there’s his hamster. The list goes on and on.” Wahahahaha! I’m sad I missed hungdaddy. It’s been a rough week around here and I’ve gotten behind! :( I didn’t read Batman’s comments but I really liked what you had to say to Jordan.

LONG POST
@Jordan
.
Just to add to what DPG was saying, you mentioned being asked to believe things are true without knowing why. It sucks, but there is a reason.
.
It is, as your teacher told you, because you are too low level, but that is not at all a bad thing. Quite simply, the truth is ridiculously complicated.
.
Highschool is spent teaching what are best described as “lies-to-children” (I’d strongly suggest you read Science of the Discworld, by Terry Pratchett, Jack Cohen and Ian Stewart, it’s where I nicked the term).
.
You are told basic approximations, and nice little stories, because they suffice for anything you will be asked to do. To explain how they actually work requires (more often then not) several pages of mathematical explanantion, which in turn need to be explained, as the methods used are not at all simple (If you ever do a degree with physics or calculus components, you will learn to loath multi-dimensional integration).
.
If you wish to study the subject more, they’ll peel away that layer of lies (approximations would really be a better term), and replace them with a slightly truer, but much harder to understand, set of approximations. As you progress further, the lies slowly approach the truth.
.
The thing is, scientists don’t actually know the truth, and have no way of conclusively proving it if we do, so this process keeps going ad infinitum. That’s how science works. We keep going to infinity, getting closer and closer to the true answer, but we must sacrifice transperency in the process.
.
To actually understand what they are talking bout at present, all that string theory gunk, requires a ridiculous level of mathematical skill, something they simply can’t teach you at highschool.
.
.
.
Now, please compare this to religion. Religion tells you a lie as well, at the beginning. BUT (and I use bad grammar intentionally) rather then strip it away as you progress, it instead builds on it. Each subsequent piece of information relies on the previous, and does nothing to correct the original flaws.
.
So, eventually, you end up with people whose entire lives are based around an easily faulted premise, yet most attempt to attack the initial fault will fail. Why?
.
Simply because the person has so much rding on that one premise, that for them to acknowledge the fault, their whole world is exposed as false. It is why so often, the devout will refuse all evidence to the contrary. Just look at Answers in Genesis’ promotion of the idea that pi = 3 exactly, or their insistance that the world is only 6000 yrs old.
.
It’s why those that break from religion generally do so while still young, and why there is conflict between religions if only one is right, then the other is living a lie (and obviously, no dirty heathen knows more than we do!).
.
.
.
There is a big difference between science and religion. Science approaches truth, religion covers it with crap. -
