If something horrific befalls someone they don’t like how often do you hear them say:see god is punishing us. Falwell once said 911 was a punishment on our nation for tolerating gays (presumably we would have been doing the Lord’s work if we burned them at the stake). No proof of course. Or how about how Coummbine occurred because we don’s allow the schools to put up placards of the ten commandments and say the “Our Father” every hour on the hour. Again no prooof, just naked and hateful assertions-given from a framework of smug self-satisfaction.
If someone they don’t like get cancer, god’s punishment. But if it strikes a 3 year old child, then its “who can account for god’s purposes” Apparently they can–when it suits THEIR PURPOSES.
We’ve been bathing for decades in the sewage of this kind of self-serving right wing religious propaganda, wouldn’t it be wonderful if we had a national leader, and I mean a president, who would call these assholes on their bullshit, proclaim how viscious, unfair and anti-American it was. @ Pluto - As to the almost universal myth of some kind of “flood” - great destruction by water - a version of this is extant, in some form or other, even among the Austrailian Aborigenes as well as the principal “Pueblo” cultures of the Native Americans, i.e. Hopi, and borrowed, or paralleled in even the great cultures of the Southern Continent - Maya, Aztec/Toltec, Inca - as well.

The transcription of oral history - myth, mixed with accurate details of important events - doesn’t generally rely on the 21st Century scientific concepts that are common today. The whole purpose of myth is one of an allegorical approach to the “whys and wherefores” of a catastrophic event, rather than an attempt to verify whether or not one species of fish might survive in a different aquatic environment.

The problem seen most often here is NOT whether or not the mythical transcription - i.e. a written copy of Genesis - is scientifically accurate. Rather, it is one of failing to recognize the underlying universality of myth as such being used to establish, teach, confirm, and otherwise preserve a culture’s sense of “morals/ethics/right-and-wrong”.

Rudolfo Anaya writes, in one of his short stories, about the Maya having accurately calculated the calendar to around 40 MILLION years. Even with our current wonders of atomic clocks, etc., we still have to recognize that this is a unique achievement for human culture. That one could build - and some have built - a form of “religion” around this unique achievement does not, in the end, invalidate the reality.

That Ariel, and many others, use - or mis-use, if you prefer - the underlying experiences that give rise to the myths is one thing. To utilize the myths to validate the experiences - and thus begin to recognize the vast congruence among cultures - is something else.

Without necessarily becoming fixated on a matter of either semantics or interpretation, there is a great deal to be learned from any belief system. Indeed, one may even learn that: “The heavens declare the Glory of God. And the firmament showeth the work of His hands.” Which for many is still both more logical and acceptable than the idea that something - especially something as vast, complex, and awsome as the material Universe(s) - merely happned to come out of nothing by chance.

There is a little “bump” of . . . shall we say, “logic”? . . . there that does give rise to negative response at the latter position. Neither Ariel nor I can, nor will, “convert” you. But, by the same token, the mere specifics of whether or not one fish can live in another’s environment certainly are not enough to even begin to refute the underlying cultural wholeness preserved in all mythology.
@fool Not all christians push there myths on to other`s, but all atheist i`ve ever met tried to change my religious views. Futher, do you think that any Intellegent “God” figure would like to be in such a simple form as spaghetti. They could have atleast giving it a better form like Goku from Dragon Ball Z.

one need to have a personal relationship with Jesus before believing becomes more than just
faith. I`ve seen that one of the spaghetti monster followers did mention that when he was
only a boy he believed in God(christ), but nothing ever came from his prairs. This may be
true because he is not asking for things of God`s will, but only things that he feels he needs
Remember, if God is “The Almighty”, I guess he would no better what you need in life than
what you think you need. This spaghetti religion looks like a religion not based on its own
foundation but on Christian foundation, but with people who are mad, because they did not get

Yes, us non-believers are so shallow. Imagine wanting things like not dying of cancer and heart disease, nor having children born with birth defects, not having wars and disease. We sure don’t understand what’s best for us, now do we?
Thing is religiion is nothing but a protection racket. If there really is a god, then he is is the inventor and author or all of our death and suffering. In point of fact, the mechanism for change occuring in the biosphere is death–death which leads to some individuals being better able to survive and replicate and therefore to pass on their genetic characteristice to their offspring than others.
What does religion offer as a counter–Salvation. And what is god saving us from. Answer: Himself.
Jesus saves us from death by letting us party with him after he murders us, but only if we really believe how wonderful He and His Father are.
Indeed the whole salvation myth makes no sense at all to a modern mind.
God is holding it against all the descendents of the First humans, the transgressions of their original ancestors? God invents death to punish all creation-from paremecia to man to the redwoods to your dog sparky.
God agrees to “save” you by giving his only begotten son over to us, so we can burtcher him. After God let us butcher him, he forgives us to the limited extent of letting us party with him after he murders us.
No other creatures catch a break. They all get waxed, just as before.

Do you think that the knowledge you posses now in the year 2007 will be good enough for survival in the year 9007. Maybe, maybe NOT! You do not have the knowledge to question any of God`s plans, so don`t. You are angry because you don`t understand his will. It makes no sense to you but it might make all the sense in the world to It`s creater. Don`t be angry with God`s plans. Rather live in the company of his follower and then when living for God and in His love, ask Him not to TELL you what his plan is, but to give you directions to follow them.

Well quite. That’s sort of the point of knowledge based on reason/science/independent thought - as the situation changes we learn more about what aids survival in that particular situation. Knowledge based on faith, however, is information considered relevant for survival a few thousand years ago. Do you really not see a certain contradiction in your position here?

I believe their preaching is i) condom use goes against gods word and ii) that condoms don’t really help to prevent the spread of AIDS! Many more people are dying unecessarily as a result of this religous dogma indoctrination.
Also the more people that get the HIV virus (the one that causes AIDS in case you didn’t know) also means the more of the virus there is to go around!!!

I’m not refuting a cultural myth. I’m refuting the claim made by people like Ariel that a flood covered the entire world around 4000 years ago. If you looked at the other posts before the fish one, you will see that we are merely using logic to refute the literal truth of the bible. I know you your self see it as a source of inspiration rather than the ‘Honest to God truth’. But Ariel made the absurd claim that that, not only is the bible version the truth, but no one is able to disprove it. Clearly we have, not just with the saline tolerance of fish but with the fact that one family can not give rise to 6billion decedents in 4000 year, including every race of human, even if you discount the millions who died of things like the black death, various wars, acts of genocide est.
I’m sure there are accounts in many civilisations about devastating floods. We had some in England this year. Thousands of years ago these events could have devastated the populations of local tribes. Indeed they still do, and with out the modern technology such events would be even more devastating.
Think of it this way; if the people in a flood area had no contact with those out side via radio, telephone, TV or carrier pigeon the flood would appear to cover everything. In fact it would only cover the area they inhabit, but how would they know better?

I have a problem with religion because for all the marginal types there are just as many fanatics who would actively seek to destroy human achievements that don’t fit in with their narrow world view. They are the ones who burn books and will take an opportunity to do great evil in the name of good!

I’ve asked (very politely, usually) the ‘people of faith’ in my group not to light up when I have to be with them in small spaces. (Thank heavens for the laws against smoking in restaurants, theaters and planes!) Some respond to my request kindly and refrained. Others believe their right to smoke trumps my right to breathe. Guess who gets ‘cursed’ with chronic respiratory ailments, RM? You are aware that not all missionaries go out to praise the same God!
I`m not saying that God said that you may not have unprotected sex, what I am saying is that unprotected sex increases the change of getting AIDS so God can not be held responsible for our stupidity. Futher His rules did mention that sex is ment for marriage, so if people stop “fucking” around then the percentage of AIDS spreading would dramatically decrease.
