I want to bring your attention to Team FSM on Kiva again. I am hoping we can make another push and become the #1 religious organization on Kiva.
I’ve talked about Kiva before, but for those who don’t know, Kiva is a non-profit whose mission is to give a leg-up to the 3rd-world through micro-lending. You, the lender, choose who you wish to lend to in chunks of $25, and in some time that money is returned to you.
The stats are impressive:
- More than $170 Million in Loans since 2005
- 98.99% payback rate
- 208 Countries represented
- Average loan size $380
I am a big fan of Kiva, so much so that for the last year I’ve asked everyone to give to Kiva instead of the Pirate boat fund.
I’ve lived in the 3rd world. I’m not a fan of traditional charities. To be specific, I’m not a fan of people working in the business of charity. I chose my words carefully. I don’t like the overhead; that is, the middlemen – and I don’t like the religious overtones. I don’t support that culture of need and dependence.
Kiva is a different model and it is the most legitimate and genuinely positive charity that I know of and that’s why I keep bringing it up.

My daughter and I decided to make some FSM cupcakes to distribute to fellow Pastafarians in the neighborhood. We knew that His Noodly Goodness approved of our work when that night we pulled out a very unusually shaped noodle from our box of spaghetti.

In the fall of 2008 some biology grad students and faculty took up the beautiful game of soccer as a team way of bringing co-workers together….but what to name their team? Only the Flying Spaghetti Monsters would do! Since then the "FSM Montreal" has grown in leaps and bounds!! For some leagues popularity has been so much that FSM has put in 2 teams!! The team has members in Chemistry and Physics and now includes players from both McGill and Concordia University as well as friends not affiliated with either University!! We even have our own website: https://sites.google.com/site/fsmmontreal/
FSM Montreal has since won the CMSS Winter co-ed 7×7 soccer league, the CMSS Fall 11×11 Soccer league and were named the most social team of CMSS in 2008…this is because the league mistook the team’s paying homage to the Flying Spaghetti Monster and his beer volcano by drinking at the local pub after games with trying to be social!

I found this at a store in San Francisco’s Chinatown in August.
