Strange Fruit - Robert Wyatt. You've got to be a brave man to cover a Billie Holiday song. You've got to be a very brave man to cover this Billie Holiday song. But I think he more than gets away with it.

"How is it that hardly any major religion has looked at science and concluded, 'This is better than we thought! The Universe is much bigger than our prophets said, grander, more subtle, more elegant. God must be even greater than we dreamed'? Instead they say, 'No, no, no! My god is a little god, and I want him to stay that way.'" - Carl Sagan

Viking Galaxy. These guys played Record Store Day in full costume, in the gap in between second-hand dance vinyl and metal CDs N-Z. Totally stole the show IMHO.

Yesterday I swapped between Tool's Opiate and Rise Against's Siren Song of the Counter Culture

Tool wrote:If you want to get your soul to heaven, trust in me.
Now don't judge or question.
You are broken now, but faith can heal you.
Just do everything I tell you to do.
I believe it's time for mankind to set aside the crutch of religion and embrace morality born of reason and truth. Those crutches have long since proven treacherous when the ground gets slippery.

The Next Day, David Bowie. Great album. Not as good as Heroes or Scary Monsters maybe, not a classic, but a good solid album.

His voice sounds old, and on the verge of cracking. Not sure if that is an affectation (this is Bowie we're talking about here), or if he's really getting on a bit and hasn't got the pipes any more.

I wouldn't be surprised if he now remasters / remixes / re-releases everything in his back catalogue and then calls it a day. The album has that kind-of 'Bye now!' feeling about it.

Mrs. T and I went to see Tommy Emmanuel last Wednesday. I found out about the concert at lunch the previous Thursday, and we bought tickets on line that night. Less than a week before the show, and we got third row center, probably the best seats in the house. If you have never seen him play, you have not experienced music. My mouth was literally hanging open the whole time. His ability to project emotion through music is unequalled in my experience - no one even comes close. Here are a few examples, there are loads more on youboob. I cannot begin to describe the clarity of tone he gets out of his instruments. He had a new guitar with him that night, and the way the harmonics rang through the fundamentals was unbelievable. I have never been so moved by a performance.

OK, now let's look at four dimensions on the blackboard.
-- Dr. Joy

English isn't much of a language for swearing. When I studied Ancient Greek I was delighted to discover a single word - Rhaphanidosthai - which translates roughly as "Be thou thrust up the fundament with a radish for adultery."

Alison Krauss and Union Station.

For reasons to petty, trivial and bizarre to go into here, I have to keep a CD in the player in the car or else the car battery goes flat and I have to walk home. This is my current CD of choice.

I like a bit of the old Krauz and Union as well. At the moment I keep having the urge to play 1970s Caravan and Genesis...I'm not proud of it.

The Rolling Stones at Glastonbury. Hmmm...

Keef isn't the player he was. I saw them in about 1989* and again in 1994, and I have heard Keef doing that slightly at-right-angles-to-reality thing that he does and no-one else can do. He can't do it any more. He can still play guitar, he still makes some of the right noises, but the bizarre not-quite chord shapes that he specialised in? Gone.

I don't know who is playing bass for The Stones these days, but he's better than Bill Wyman ever was.

*in about 1985, I was asked by a friend of a friend if I wanted to play drums for a band. I went to see them play, and then I declined their offer, because my own band at the time seemed to be doing OK at the time. The next time I saw that band was when they were supporting the Stones at Hampden Park in Glasgow.

Just listened to Bobby Womack's headline set at Glastonbury.

Bobby Womack is about 9 months younger than Mick Jagger, but his set was just AMAZING!!!?! When Paul McCartney played the Olympics opening ceremony, he no longer had the pipes. His band had the chops, but he no longer had the pipes. When The Who played the Olympics closing ceremony, Roger Daltrey had the pipes, but the band were maybe lacking the odd chop or two.

Bobby Womack has the pipes, and his band has the chops. But his daughter has stupid hipster spectacles, which spoiled it for me somewhat. But other than that, it was brilliant.

Also, Nile Rodgers and Chic were funking amazing. But Nile Rodgers and Whoopi Goldberg - never seen in the same room together. Know what I mean?

Daft Punk, Random Access Memories.

Fecking brilliant. Not quite a concept album, but there are musical themes flowing through it, and a lot of the songs are about identity and soul searching, so there's more a process of development than a story to it.

But the production is immense, the musicianship is flawless (and no, it is not all sequenced - you can tell), and it's got the Nile Rodgers / Chic Organisation stamp all over it. I think it's a great album.

Unless you think disco sucks, in which case you won't like it.

The Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular. It wasn't as good as it usually is unfortunately, but still, I love hearing the "1812 Overture" and "The Stars And Stripes Forever".

There was a local blues act performing with the Pops, and they were debuting two new songs from their new album. I loved the first one they played, but then my grandmother said, "Let's see what's going on in D.C.!" and my mother changed the channel, so I missed half the song before I convinced them to change it back. :(

I HATE when people flip channels back and forth. If you're going to watch a program, watch the damn program! Don't half-watch three programs! :furious:
