Well, it is SO easy to join. And the octopus thing works for those of us who also read Pharyngula.

But going around saying "Hebbo!" to people is too reminiscent of the Teletubbies.

saying hebbo is really only a greeting in octish. most tarvuists just speak their native tongues.
you would only say hebbo if you needed to communicated with one of our fine tentacled friends

IMO, Pastafari will always be more credible and intriguing. Since Tarvuism was constructed solely for the purpose of being the subject of a television show, it will inevitably be subjected to doctrinal contradictions and major changes. Also, the bulk of its followers will be confused, rebellious 12-year-olds watching Cartoon Network at 3 AM whilst eating cheetos in a soiled pair of underwear. Eating pasta as a religious sacrament, preaching the gospel in my school's courtyard in full pirate regalia, and drinking all the beer I can handle in the afterlife sound soooo much more appealing to me than looking to a television show for spirtual guidance.
