One of the (many) things that shocked me about Australia is that some words, that would be extremely offensive anywhere else on this planet, are not taken that way here (at least, not by White Aussies); like 'wog'* merely means 'non-English European' and is often used semi-affectionately. Never heard it applied to non-whites. Paradoxically, I've heard the word 'black' used offensively. Very offensively. There is a lot of casual racism here, never mind the truly evil stuff.

There's an English saying that 'the wogs start at Dover' going south, and some people think they start at Birmingham (if not Watford) going in the opposite direction. When his time comes, I will be equally complimentary about him.

In my part of the world, the 'c' word is used as a term of affection between young men: "How ye doin, ya c***?". No offence intended, and 99.9% of the time, none taken. In the spirit of Lenny Bruce, if you disempower the word you remove the offence it can cause, which is good, but I still struggle with the 'c' word in everyday conversation.

Yeah, well we go further in Australia. I know people who use that word to refer to any person, as in:

I can't find a park anywhere in this lot! Shall we stalk these c***s? They look like they're going home.

Or (the funniest I've heard so far):

I worked in China as a missionary for while, with the Children of God. You know - giving bibles to poor c***s.
