I have also been attacked for my lack of belief in a "recognized religion". I live in the bible belt and was told the worst thing that ever happened is when they stopped saying prayers in school. I argued religion doesn't belong in public schools (1st Amend.) and even the pledge of allegiance has been bastardized over the years. That lit them up and the continued the rant of the US was founded on christian beliefs as evidenced in the pledge. I study constitutional history and as a country we have seriously gone in the wrong direction. But than again didn't Bush say god was on our side???

Moreover, the pledge was written in the 1890's by a complete racist who didn't believe that those damn dirty immigrants would give up their allegiance to their home countries.

They modified it first by changing "my flag" to the totally crapy sounding "the flag of the United States of America" because they were afraid that those same dirty immigrants would mistakenly think that they were pledging alegiance to their home countries flags.

I live under the buckle of the Bible belt. It is legal for students to pray in school. It is legal for them to have a voluntary prayer group on campus. It is not legal for a teacher to lead all the students in prayer. Frankly, sometimes rabid atheists can be just as hemmorhoidal as fundamentalist christians. Just saying.

Very true. However, like most things with secularism it comes down to one question.

Would it still be OK if you didn't agree with them?

If a hindu teacher lead a group of students in prayer, or a muslim teacher did the same. Some would suggest attempts at conversion.

Same reason an Athiest teach can't lead a group.

Better to be somewhat annoyed than to be crying for blood, or persecution.

I am going to take a position of benevolent ignorance. As far as I am concerned, all gods are of equal validity. However, once a student starts proselytizing in my classroom, he or she will find themselves no longer sheltered in the comforting harbor of my patience.

Everyone has a right to believe what they want. But the moment they force any single one of their beliefs on someone else it is wrong. That being said when I was in about 3rd Grade I had a substitute music teacher in my PUBLIC school who was making us sing church songs... I refused to sing, he got mad, and I hid. He then came searching for me, picked me up by my arm and threw me into a metal folding chair. This resulted in a hairline fracture which caused my arm to break later that day while I was riding bike.

But every job has a chance of that. A friend of mine died in the line of duty as a reverse mortgage broker.
