Earworms!

Postby Ubi Dubium on Wed Sep 24, 2008 8:46 am

For the last two days I have had a song stuck in my head. I was at the Aardvarcheology blog, and I played a video embedded there. It was Still Alive from the end of Portal. Now I can't get rid of it. Total earworm.

My usual solution to earworms is to sing or play the song to someone else until it is stuck in their head, and then I'm over it. I played it for my daughters, and now they are singing it all day too, and it's just making things worse. My spouse usually tries to get rid of them by singing something even more obnoxious, like MacArthur Park, but I can't say that that would be an improvement.

So, what's the most annoying earworm you've ever had?

I guess it’s my turn for an amazing coincidence. I almost posted about this a few times but just never got around to it.

For two days last week, I had Me and Bobby McGee stuck in my head. I love Janis but I just couldn’t function! I tried all the tricks that usually work: singing it out loud from beginning to end, singing Rocky Raccoon from memory, turning on the radio and singing along – nothing worked. Finally, the other morning I awoke with a clear head and have been desperately trying not to think of that song ever since, even though it’s one of my favorites.

Busted flat in Baton Rouge, waiting for a train
Feeling near as faded as my jeans.
Bobby thumbed a diesel down just before it rained,
It rode us all the way to New Orleans.

la, de, da, la, de, dada…

Windshield wipers slapping time, holding Bobby's hand in mine,
We sang every song that driver knew.

Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose,
Nothing don't mean nothing honey if it ain't free,
And feeling good was easy, Lord, when he sang the blues,
You know feeling good was good enough for me,
Good enough for me and my Bobby McGee.

mm, mmm, hmm…

But I'd trade all of my tomorrows for one single yesterday
To be holding Bobby's body next to mine.

Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose,
Nothing, that's all that Bobby left me, yeah,
But feeling good was easy, Lord, when he sang the blues,
Hey, feeling good was good enough for me, hmm hmm,
Good enough for me and my Bobby McGee.

La la la, la la la la, la la la, la la la la
La la la la la Bobby McGee.
La la la la la, la la la la la
La la la la la, Bobby McGee, la.

Oh, great, there it goes again.

Actually, this earworm, while hard to get rid of, is not as annoying as some. I sing in a large chorus, we do a huge variety of music, and some of the stuff that gets stuck in my head is not anything anybody else would recognize:

"What's that you're humming?"

"Oh, well you know in Return of the King, the part where Frodo and Gollum are fighting over the ring inside Mount Doom? I was humming the 1st Alto part from that part of the score."

So I'm stuck suffering with those all by my lonesome.

Edd - Good luck getting rid of yours. At least Bobby McGee is a good song. Look on the bright side - it could have been Achy Breaky Heart!

Get Low by Li'l John.
Ridiculously frequently.
I don't even like rap!
Plus, the "Li'l" prefix confuses me. I mean, Li'l Wayne is anything but little. Terrifying Wayne perhaps?
Look! A new sig.
Blaaaaag.

Reads thread with fingers in ears saying "Lalalalalalalalalalalalalalalala"

That one would stick with me for weeks on end. I've now adapted a technique where when I see the commercial come on I plug my ears say la la la and race to the remote to mute it.

It's a Small World! NOOOOO! AAARRRRGGHHH!

I've spent entire days at Disney unable to get rid of that song. At least until the electrical parade started, and that got a whole new round of annoyance going.

(And UbiDubiKid #1 put Still Alive on a streaming loop for about an hour today while she played an online game. This song's embedding itself in my brain!)

I have only a few weaknesses, but those weaknesses are terrible indeed. I found my brain playing Barbie Girl whenever my mind wandered for nigh on a year. Fortunately, lately I've had Around the World by Daft Punk on the brain.

And Zank's right. I think the youngest person here is me, and I'm 14.

Lying is the Most Fun a Girl Can Have Without Taking off Her Clothes - Panic At the Disco. It's freaking imbedded in my head. *shakes head to get out the earworm*

And I'm putting my heart out on display

Just a funeral march for love today
The band strikes up and they're playing a song
Dressed in black, and we're singing along to the
Broken hearts parade
I've never been better then I am today

I can get rid of any song from my head just by singing

ring ring ring ring ring ring ring BANANA PHONE
ding dong ding dong ding DONANA PHONE
it's so exiting
oh so delighting
it's the best, beats the rest
cellular, modular, interactiveodular

and that song gets out of my head realy easily it stays for about five minutes long enough for you to forget about the old song then it leaves
