The Pirate Pope

John XXIII was a pirate during the early renaissance. He got in good with a powerful italian family (cough Godfather) and they supported him all the way from Pirate to pope. One of the first things he did was make the Medici family the official bankers for the papacy, which helped them rule for the next four generations. A pirate remembers his mates, after all.

As a side note, the pope is believed to have been an atheist.
