The originators of International Talk Like A Pirate Day, John Baur ("Ol' Chumbucket") and Mark Summers ("Cap'n Slappy") originally picked June 6 as the date, as this was the date on which the racquetball game between Summers and Baur where they first had the idea took place. However, as June 6 is also the commemoration of D-Day, out of respect for the observance of this occasion, they instead chose the birthday of Summers's ex-wife, as it would be easy for them to remember (Sept. 19).
The Patron Saint of International Talk Like A Pirate Day is actor Robert Newton who played Long John Silver in the 1950 Disney film "Treasure Island"
