my friend, the free range chicken raiser, says it is a curious young chicken thing. The older chickens, despite being free to roam, stay in the yard and do not venture across the road.

Ah, yet another of life's metaphors.

So why don't the older chickens cross the road?

Because it's tradition. They can't be bothered with newfangled ideas like that.

The chicken crossed the road, in point of fact, because it's grandfather/uncle/creepy older relative had this ring, see, and blah, blah, blah...
