Okay, I've searched the archives, googled and even tried to pray and still can't find an answer: What is the origin of the pirate fish?

I just ordered a Teeshirt from the FSM store. When I wear this thing to Walmart and am accosted by FSM-wannabes and innocent bystanders, I want to be able to intelligently inform them of the origins of Jolly. I can't do that until you people tell me the history.
