If comics had any realism in them, Luthor would be top of the list of DC villains, but he's not because he never manages to do anything. At least Doomsday killed Superman.

The Joker, on the other hand, not only killed Commissioner Gordon's woman, he shot batgirl through the spine, putting her in a wheelchair for life, then took naked pictures of her, and to top it all off... He beat Robin (#2) to death with a freaking crowbar, then blew him up just to be sure.

That has to win for DC.

Luthor never does anything? What about becoming President of the United States? The Joker's a great villain, don't get me wrong, he's definitely in the top five all time. But at the end of the day, he does things anybody can do. He's just a really theatrical thug.

Luthor, through he fails often, fails attempting great things that only someone of his caliber could pull off.

Shit, I could beat some dipshit to death with a crowbar. I could shoot some chick. I couldn't get elected President, and probably neither could any of you, to say nothing of The Joker.

I couldn't make an umbrella/machine gun either, doesn't mean Penguin is better than Joker. Luthor is things no other (dc) villain is. Smart, able to manipulate the love of the people, President..etc. From a supervillain perspective tho, what has he ever done to really hurt Superman? Every Luthor story ends with complete failure. The Joker wins some now and again.

Yeah, but you said yourself that his lack of success was due to the unrealistic nature of comic books. It's obvious that his creators simply don't let him win because he's too dangerous to actually unleash.

I mean, Superman is the most powerful superhero of all time and as close to being invincible as it gets. And he has never been able to put Luthor away once and for all. Luthor displays his greatness through his longevity against the Man of Steel.

Realistically, Lex Luthor would run train over the vast majority of superheroes. Spiderman? The Incredible Hulk? Iron Man? Any of the X-men or even the Fantastic 4? They'd all get jacked. Only Superman can really challange Lex Luthor, and vice versa.

Lex Luthor has been thwarting the greatest Superhero of all time and he's been doing it since before most other comic book characters were conceived. That has to count for something.

Thwarting? By what standard? Rich enough to buy his way out of jail?

If that's your standard then Magneto and even more so Dr. Doom win by a mile. Hell, doom has his own country that loves him, plus he's a super-genius and incredibly powerful sorcerer.

In DC if thwarting Superman is the standard then there's Doomsday who killed him (and completely destroyed every other hero he even looked at) and then there's Darkseid who runs his own planet.

Lex is the biggest underacheiver in comics.

Lex Luthor is nowhere near as cool as just about every other villain in history. Heck, the teletubbies are more dastardly than him.

One of my favorite Lex stories is the one where he creates a somputer to find Superman's secret identity. The computer looks into it, and eventually tells him that Superman is a reporter named Clark Kent, whom Lex has met on several occasions. Lex dismisses that idea.

That's precisely my point! Precisely! Lex wins all the time, they just call it "non-canonical" in order to maintain his clownish nature. This is because Superman is and has always been the most childish and simplistic comic book character of all time. If Lex Luthor was handled by someone like Frank Miller, he'd be unstoppable.

Meh. I'm not a huge follower of Marvel comics anyway. I've learnt most of this stuff from my friend, who's a Marvel addict.

Fine, I'll agree that a Lex handled by someone like Miller would be hella cool. That character doesn't exist, however.
