Just debated a Creationist...

It made me feel dirty and drained.

Frankly, I don't know how many more debates I want to get into now.

I have a friend who describes herself as a post-atheist, meaning she's been an atheist long enough that she no longer feels the desire to debate morons.

I'm not quite there yet, myself. :shellfish:
I believe it's time for mankind to set aside the crutch of religion and embrace morality born of reason and truth. Those crutches have long since proven treacherous when the ground gets slippery.

Not actually sure. I'm thinking Young Earth.

She definitely had the worst definitions of evolution, though, which was expected.

There is your first mistake.

Anti-evolutionists come in many flavors. Before even engaging one you need to get them to establish where they are coming from, in order to know how to base your arguments.

If you are just defending evolution, then your defenses will be the same regardless of the flavor. But if you are going on the offensive then you have to know the flavor.

But I wasn't on the offensive. We were arguing the role of Intelligent Design and the 'failures' of evolution.

Remember the greatest argument, NO YOU! But be prepared for him to not get it and continue arguing.

hah. i work with two southern baptists and once upon a time the topic of evolution came up. i said something about it and they glared me.
i said, "what?"
they said "oh, you're one of those people..."
"those people?"
"yeah, the ones who believe in evolution"

i just shrugged.

You should have then said..."Oh, your THOSE people. People who "...believe in an invisible man in the sky who watches everything we do, every minute of every day, with a special list of ten things he does not want us to do, and if we do ANY of these ten things, he has a special place full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry for ever and ever 'til the end of time. But, he loves you. He loves you and he needs money!" (The preceeding is from George Carlin)

Thanks George Carlin!!! :D

you can't teach a cripple to walk if the cripple refuses to stand up.

besides there really is no polite way of saying there is no god. how do you politely and discreetly say to someone that they have devoted their whole life on a lie?

I wonder how many people have been "converted" to atheism, not including personal experiences, insights, and logic unless preceding another's argument.
