Student Taught Course

I am a student at Rice University, and we have the ability to teach a class on what we find interesting. I obviously had to choose Pastafarianism. I am currently working on the syllabus and I am looking for any tips that are particularly worth talking about. This class is not about teaching Pastafarianism as a religion, but look at the reasons of its existence and the true purpose of Pastafarianism. I really need to look at the greater social context of the entire thing.

So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Well the obvious place to start would seem to be the whole Intelligent Design controversy. From there you could introduce the specific case of the Kansas School board and Bobby Henderson's letter, and how that sparked off the FSM movement.

I think this is a fantastic opportunity to discuss why ID isn't science, shouldn't be taught in science classrooms etc.

You could finish up with a bit of FSM theology at the end for fun but I'm thinking that the take home message should be that ID and FSM-ism both have the same standing in relation to each other, so teach one, teach both...

Teach the history of ID, how it evolved from a religious "fact" into a "scientific theory".
