The Supreme Court Ruling on Planned Parenthood

Postby ToddSparks on Thu Jun 26, 2014 3:38 pm

I saw on the news today the Supreme Court ruling regarding the Massachusetts Planned Parenthood barrier law being struck-down...

For those unfamiliar, Mass. had a law requiring a distance between pro-life protesters and people going to and from the clinics; the court ruled that protesters have a right to get right up to a woman's face when she is going inand out of PP facilities now.

I don't live in Mass., but the local PP facility often has people out there pestering women; so I thought, hey someone should start a organization that escorts women and shields them from the in-your-face spittilings of the anti-abortion activists, who tend to get rather excitable and vociferous. Not to mention have a tendency to lay their hands on people, in an unwelcome manner.

While pondering this dilemma, I felt touched by His Noodeley Goodness and compelled to call the local PP office and inquire as to weather they needed volunteer escorts.

Thus begins my journey, one I did not expect, yet feel the influence of the awesome cosmic Alfredo goodness all around me.

Just thought I'd share.

May I be the first to say that that's awesome, volunteering to help vulnerable women on what could very well be one of the hardest days of their lives.

It is absolutely disgraceful that people who don't agree with abortion feel the need to harrass women who attend PP clinics (even though PP clinics offer a wide range of reproductive health and maternal and child health services, so odds are that many of the women they're abusing aren't seeking terminations anyway).

I notice that the Supreme Court ruling did leave open the way for Massachusetts to write a law similar to a federal law to make it a crime to obstruct, intimidate, or interfere with someone seeking reproductive health care. The court also said said obstruction of driveways can be addressed through traffic ordinances, and Massachusetts can pass a law requiring crowds that are blocking an entrance to disburse when ordered to do so by the police. I'd maybe suggest starting a writing campaign to the Massachusetts requesting that they pass just such laws.
