You can buy them pretty much anywhere. We get ours from the supermarket. Just look around wherever you see something that might be Indian.

Oh, and bake them in the oven, don't microwave them. They both end up similar in the end, but baked ones taste a great deal better.

No, no No! Puppadams are best deep fried! They poof up beautifully, and then you drain them so that they are not so greasy. Then you eat them with tamarind-date chutney.

Actually, several cultures have something very similar. From Chinese food stores I get shrimp chips, in all sorts of unnatural colors. And from the hispanic section I get duritos, usually a little bit cumin flavored, often wagon-wheel shaped and a sort of golden-orange color. All of these cook the same way, drop the chip into hot oil, let it puff for 20 seconds or so, then scoop it out. Sometimes I will make all three of these at the same time for the kids. Makes a really cool looking plate of crunchy goodness.

Twisty, I bet you can find at least one of these three kinds at a market near you!

English isn't much of a language for swearing. When I studied Ancient Greek I was delighted to discover a single word - Rhaphanidosthai - which translates roughly as "Be thou thrust up the fundament with a radish for adultery."

I've never tried them that way! I'll definitely give it a shot though. Thanks!

Careful when you fry them, they are finicky about temperature. Test a small piece of puppadam as the oil heats. When it poofs up in about 10 seconds, that's just right.

Unless the ones you are buying are pre-poofed. The ones here come as a thin flat wafer about 4 inches across, with no puffiness at all. I'm not sure how they are sold there.

The only thing Indian around here are the guys running the gas stations and at that, we don't see many of them.
(note: I have nothing against anyone from India)

We had a cookout last night and we got the Indian guy who runs the gas station across the street, Uday to come over and party with us after he shut down the store. That was a trip!

Most of our customers are Indian and I'd like to party with some of them, they are just too funny at times.

!!!

I eat tamarind chutney with everything!

And I come from the place where Pappadam was first created!

And I had some today!

Because that would leave them open to prosecution under Ireland's new blasphemy-libel law.

Ahern defends new blasphemy law
By Dearbhail McDonald Legal Editor
Thursday April 30 2009

JUSTICE Minister Dermot Ahern has defended the introduction of a new crime of blasphemous libel, stating that a new definition was required by the Constitution.

Speaking after an Oireachtas committee meeting, Mr Ahern yesterday defended a fine of up to €100,000 that will be imposed on blasphemers.

The Government moved to revive the crime by placing it onto a fresh statutory footing following advice from the office of the Attorney General.

Gardai will now have the power to seize blasphemous material from the home or any other premises used by a person convicted of blasphemy.

The proposed law flies in the face of a recommendation by the Law Reform Commission which said in 1991 that there was no place for such an offence in a society which respects freedom of speech.

There are fears that the new offence may be used by fundamentalists to crack down on publication of material perceived to be injurious to faith.

- Dearbhail McDonald Legal Editor

I haven't found anything about it being passed, though.

Oh well; I hope that, even if it is passed,it will fail to be enforced just like every other blasphemy law of the last century.

It passed on Friday by one vote. Here's the Friendly Atheist link on it: http://friendlyatheist.com/2009/07/13/the-blaspheming-begins/. There are many other news articles about it.
