A great bar bet

Postby Fun Doh Mental on Wed Dec 12, 2007 1:07 am

A bar bet: I or (The Flying Spaghetti Monster) hand you a magic penny and tell you clutch it overnight. You wake up the next day (day 1) and you have 2 cents. The next day 4 cents and so on. How much money (not pennies) will you have at the end of 30 days? "Guess....If you come within 50% of the answer, I buy you a drink. If not you owe me a drink."

Let's say they guess $100,000. Take out a calculator and put in 2 x .01 and hit = 10 times. Show $10.24. Double the bet. They say $500,000 (they owe you a second drink. Five more =. Show $327.68. Their guess is wrong.....Another drink they owe you. A total of 20 = shows $10,485.76. Bet. They lose. Keep going.

A penny a day doubled for 30 days = $10,737,417. You've won a lot of drinks. You need the calculator because no one will believe you.

The first day is the magic day that it doubles to 2 cents.
$10.7 million is the correct answer.

The question is "How much is a penny doubled every day for
30 days". First doubling day is the next day after sleeping with
it grasped in your hand.

Using a simple calculator 2 x .01 with the = sign hit 30 times you get
10,737,417. FSM will change your data to mine anyhow.

if it is one penny duobling then on the last day it doubles again to make5,368,709.12
but if you have someone pay you a penny that doubles each day you have the previous numbers to add to the total making it 10,737,418.24
but since you said it was one penny doubling itself it would only be 5,368,709.12
I am sorry but you FAIL

hiting the equal sign won't work you have to actualy hit times then 2 then = for thirty times

Day one is 2 cents
Day two is 4 cents
Day 30 is $10.7 million.

This is how I read it, and doing it out on the calculator
as described, you reach 10.7. In any case, no one is
going to guess within 50% of the answer unless they say

"Hmmmm. That's 1 to the 30th power. Let me get out the
ol' slide rule". I doubt that it can be done on a slide rule.

I wonder how many FSM blogger have seen the following:

A slide rule.
The old Friden calculators with more than a 10 x 10 grid of buttons. If you divided by 0, and left the room, it would fry itself.
A real dial phone.
A payphone with a dial.
A record player
An 8 track player.

I think I'll start another posting!

Nope. I hand you a penny today and say sleep on it
overnight. The first day it doubles to 2 cents. You need one more
calculation at the end. You have the double to 2 cents as the first day.

Try it on the calculator - the first step (2 x .01 =....shows 2 cents. It's the first time
= is hit. 29 more times and you get to $10.7 million. You still will win
a lot of drinks. I've been doing it this way for years (not betting for drinks, but I should).

I have already proved you wrong
and your calculator is getting it wrong because you wouldn't hit times two before the equal sign I have proved you wrong also because of my erlier post

Yeah, i'm kidding.

I'll check the math, but i'm not going to pick sides until i've checked it.

I think it's just semantics you're arguing over, though.

Punching (.01 x 2) into my calculator and hitting the = button 30 times gave me a product of 10737418.24.

now try it the non lazy way

I am serious taking .01 x 2 and just hitting the equal sign gives a different answer it adds them all together

No, it doesn't.

Sorry, but the calculator is programmed to repeat the previous function when you hit the "equals" button repeatedly. Not all of them do that, though, so you have to keep punching it in.

I think the problem you have is your starting point. You are counting the penny itself as the first day. The first day is when you have 2 pennies, ie the penny has doubled once.

The thirtieth day is when you have ...hwoever...many pennies, and the penny has doubled thirty times.

Your "proof" has 30 lines, but only 29 operations. You're missing one, sparky.
