Pedant of the week award

Postby Beardyoldblaggard on Mon Sep 24, 2007 4:17 pm

I think that as pedantry is a key skill for full participation on this board, we should inaugurate a weekly award for excellence in this field. This will act as a spur, both for professional pedants to maintain and develop their current performance and also for aspiring pedants who can learn from the masters (and/or mistresses).

I would ask admins to give a red tag (in very small, neat writing) to attach to the winner's avatar panel.

My nomination for the inaugural award goes to RRR for his sterling work on the 10,000 commandments thread.

For the fifth labor, Eurystheus ordered Hercules to clean up King Augeas' stables. Hercules knew this job would mean getting dirty and smelly, but sometimes even a hero has to do these things. Then Eurystheus made Hercules' task even harder: he had to clean up after the cattle of Augeas in a single day.

I prefer the older definition of pedant: a teacher.

You omitted both the abbreviation marks in R.R.R., and the parenthetical in the title of the 10,000 (more) commandments thread.

poll position?

Nope. Pole position is correct.

pole position
–noun
1. a position on the inside of the track in any race.
2. (in auto racing) a starting position on the inside of the front row.
3. an advantageous position.

As one who does not follow racing of any sort, I did not catch the meaning. But I was aware that I might not be correct in my correction; hence the question mark.
