When I lived in the DC 'burbs, an aide to DC's mayor got fired for using 'niggardly' - a perfectly good word - in a budget meeting.
He was shunned for a while but eventually got hired back on in another position, after a public vocabulary lesson for the rest of the city government.

The "commensurate" incident involved an Official Verbal Reprimand on my Permanent Record for "using too big of words".

Afterwards I told my boss that my friends recommended I retain my normal vocabulary, but drop one syllable off each word as the people at [X] wouldn't know the difference. Interestingly, I did *not* get into any trouble for saying *that*.

Months later, I brought an employee to angry, hiccuping tears with the word "appropriate".

That's it! I only heard it spoken, and I don't know any French, so I had to guess.

It sounds pretty cool if you hit someone over the head with a rolled up piece of paper while you say it. Gives it flair.
