I've got 'Paul' the movie but I haven't got around to watching it yet. Nick Frost used to live in Twickenham but you don't see him any more so I think he's gone to Hollywood.

I believe it's time for mankind to set aside the crutch of religion and embrace morality born of reason and truth. Those crutches have long since proven treacherous when the ground gets slippery.

I've been watching "Mystery Science Theater 3000" movies.

It's right for reducing the intensity that is otherwise my tendency.

Possible spoilers in tiny print.

The whole triology is excellent.

FYI, I think Rain is referring to the American film version that just came out, not the Swedish one.

I quite liked it. The main problem I had with it was the almost gratuitous nudity that seemed to be forced into scenes that didn't really need it (which I reckon was maybe half of the nude scenes). Sometimes less is more. Also, I never found out who killed the cat which was a shame as the cat was my favourite character.

Those are minor gripes though, on the whole it's a very well acted and directed film that made me feel genuinely anxious at several points. Plus the scene where the girl goes back to the rapist's flat? Excellent, she genuinely gave the impression of a deranged but logical individual rather than the cliche'd frothing at the mouth psycho.

Edit - In case anyone else goes to see it to prevent this from driving you potty, the actor that plays Henrik is Christopher Plummer. I knew I recognised him but I spent the whole 2 and a half hours trying to work out who it was :idiot:

Haven't seen it, but my gut tells me if anything they cut down on the sexual content as compared to the book.

Pretty sure that was Martin Vanger. He knew Blomkvist was getting close to figure out his crimes, knew he was caring for the cat, was trying to send a message.

Ah, that might be it. I haven't read the books but they're on a long list of things to read when I have the time and inclination to get back into reading properly.

That would make sense.

Suing the Devil... well 15mins of it before I quit, cringing from the crappy performance of the guy suing and extreme embarrassment it was made in Oz. Big fail.... because for me, in the bit I watched, the standout was Satan [Malcolm McDowell - they probably spent most their budget on him].

The last Harry Potter film.

Better than the last two. I see why they split it into two parts, it allowed them to sacrifice neither the story nor the action bits. And the action bits were quite fun. Although, I wonder how the story (meaning the book here) would have been different, as well as the fan reaction, if [spoiler, even though pretty much everyone knows how it ended]Rowling had Potter die, and not resurrected him with the Deus Ex Machina device. Obviously, Voldemort could have been killed without Potter being alive.[/spoiler]

Also: Neville Longbottom is a B.A. Mofo.

It would have gotten a bit religiony and turned into a modern day version of Narnia where the pure innocent must die for the original sin to be forgiven, the same way Aslan was the metaphor for Jesus.

Also, personally I'd rather have had Percy die than one of the twins. You could still have had the 'twins needing to grow up' angle from them seeing Percy admit his mistakes, rejoin the family and die protecting them. Much better redemption angle and the twins were among the best characters in the books. Rowling's version is basically killing off Legolas but keeping Boromir.

Just because someone makes the ultimate sacrifice, doesn't mean they're necessarily a christ figure. If anything, the whole "we're in a metaphysical train station" bit smacked more of religion to me, than if Potter had just died, Voldemort marched back to Hogwarts, the fight went down and Longbottom killed the snake. Although, the fact that Rowling repeatedly referred to Potter as "The Chosen One" throughout the series made the religious metaphors inevitable.
