Saw "men who stare at goats" tonight... it was amusing (rather than hilarious), but on the whole rather disappointing and incoherent... the trailer made it seem a lot more promising (I guess that's what trailers do though!)... the whole thing was just totally implausible... which I find rather destroys the comedy if you are unable to maintain Coleridge's "willing suspension of disbelief"...

Has anyone seen the Fourth Kind? I feel tempted to go and see it, but I'm hesitant after making the mistake of watching Pandorum a few weeks ago!

Would the full title be "close encounters of the Fourth Kind"?
Apparently a Close Encounter of the Fourth kind is when a human is abducted by a UFO or its occupants. According to Jacques Vallée (computer scientist, author, ufologist and former astronomer) a CE4 should be described as "cases when witnesses experienced a transformation of their sense of reality," so as to also include non-abduction cases where absurd, hallucinatory or dreamlike events are associated with UFO encounters.
We might be getting some of these reports from DTH before too long if he doesn't get a good night's sleep!

PS I always thought a Close Encounter of the first kind was a human meeting with another person
a Close Encounter of the second kind was a human meeting with an animal
a Close Encounter of the third kind was a human meeting with an alien
and a Close Encounter of the Fourth kind was a human meeting with a vegetable!

Two or three, but I haven't been reading much, so I haven't finished one in about two weeks (that's what I get for reading the Wheel of Time series!).

'cos it was so bad that it's put you off reading for an indefinite period?
I wish I had the time and energy to read more... In the last 2 months I've only read "Mary and the Giant" by PK Dick and a book about Gladiators by a certain Michael Grant... and apart from re-reading most of the Catcher in the Rye" that's about it... I started reading "The Varieties of Religious Experience: A Study in Human Nature" by the psychologist and philosopher William James but when one is working one just doesnt have the time for such demanding texts!

Watched G.I. Joe: the Rise of Cobra again last night. I like it even though it didn't do well at the box office. Not a great film, but kinda fun to watch.

No, the series is actually very good, it's just far too huge!

Mirrors, with Kiefer Sutherland. The ending leaves a lot open to debate actually....

I've heard that Mirrors is good, if a little gory. For some reason, Keifer Sutherland seems to like doing films that mess with your head.

Hence the retreat into the non-challenging world of the Dragonball Manga?

Never could get into Dragonball. Anyone know where I can get the 3rd Bleach box set for cheap?

We finished up Kill Bill Vol 2 last night. The first movie was just all-out cheesy cartoon-violent fun. We loved it. The first half of the second one was just as good, but then it really bogged down at the end. It got slow and serious and emotional and stayed that way too long. Suddenly it felt like a whole different movie. Ubi Dubius thought it might have played better as one movie rather than two.

Jonathan Ross, a TV movie critic, said almost exactly that same thing. The story only really needs a two-hour movie, but Tarantino needed four hours for all his martial arts, hip cultural references, witty one-liners, and of course the soundtrack. So what's more important? The story, or all the gubbins that goes with it?

(I have no wish to slag off Tarantino, he is capable of genius: IMHO Jackie Brown is an almost perfect movie.)
