A new mathematical notation

Postby anomie-p on Thu May 02, 2013 3:20 am

"Imaginary" numbers aren't imaginary. They exist, by definition. Much like the FSM. Therefore, I propose that such quantities henceforth be referred to as "noodly" quantities and "noodly numbers", and the convention of representing such quantities with the symbol i be immediately replaced with a notation succinctly defined by the following:

I like it! I know no maths whatsoever, but it sounds promising. :idiot:

My next thought on my proposal is ... anybody know LaTeX/TeX well enough to build a setup that will swap \imath and \jmath with the proposed indicator?

Or, heck, even just add a \noodly.

Hmm. E to the power of noodly pi .. sounds tasty.

I suggest pillaging the § symbol. It already exists, but isn't currently used for anything mathematical.

Back in the day when I tried to study mathematics, my brain exploded when imaginary numbers were introduced. Now, 40 years later, I've crossed their path again. Help - my brain hurts

Don’t worry ‘Sam, I must be 40 years further advanced. I thought an imaginary number was the pretty pirate wench of my dreams.
