Berlin Pastafarians find publicity
Published by Bobby Henderson August 25th, 2008 in General FSM news and Recognition. 18 CommentsPastafarian Dylan found this article published in the Berlin Kurier. Amazing!
Here’s a translation:
Spaghetti Monster, Have Mercy
Pastafarians celebrate their fun religion in pasta masses
Friedrichshain (place): They say that they believe in the power of the internet, beer and stripper factories and that a Flying Spaghetti Monster created the Earth. Millions of Pastafarians worldwide worship their god. In Berlin and Brandenburg almost 500 young people perform a pilgrimage regularly to pasta masses.
The community in pirate costumes stand with a set expression in the living room, say a civil “Our Monster” open their mouth to receive spaghetti and beer from their priest. 10 minutes later the religious speech is over, the three youths hungrily eat bolognese in silence. A typical evening watching television begins. Have these lads got pasta on the brain?
Brother Spaghetti alias Rainer Weida (57) explains “we want to use our mostly public masses to criticise every form of religion.” In East German times the teacher complained already about the “misuse of faith by the Church to hold power”. His club modelled on that of spoof prophet Bobby Henderson, who campaigns in Kansas against the free churches, has 20 members in Berlin and in the whole of Germany 500,000. The goal “is to make sects and fanatics think through pasta.”
(Captions)
First the mass, then the evening meal. The community enjoys their favourite meal – two meatballs with spaghetti.
Priest Captain Nodus alias musician Wolf Weida (35) divides the spaghetti offering between the young people.

NIH supports FSM
Published by Bobby Henderson July 14th, 2008 in General FSM news and Recognition. 10 CommentsI spotted the FSM on the main page of PubMed. For those non-scientists out there, this is basically an index/repository of all biological knowledge and medical research. It’s run by the National Institutes on Health (NIH).

Rolling Stone

Rolling Stone has featured the Flying Spaghetti Monster in its latest issue – the one with Keith Richards and Mick Jagger on the cover – the April 17, 2008 issue, pictured to the right. Check out page 39.
RS has a huge circulation; who knows how many converts we gained. It’s cool to see the mainstream media picking up on the fastest growing religion in the world.
The article – Investigating Bush – is about Rep. Henry Waxman, Chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. More or less, he’s the guy calling out the Bush Administration on their bullshit. I could not be more pleased that the FSM was included – I have a lot of respect for Rep. Waxman, as I imagine many Pastafarians do.
I’ve included a couple scans. Click to enlarge.

The FSM is placed furthest to the left on the “with us – against us” scale. That is awesome.
This is the second time that the FSM has been featured in Rolling Stone. The first was in the November 3, 2005 issue. Hoobastank vocalist Doug Robb was wearing an FSM shirt. He also thanked the the FSM on their last album’s cover-art.
The Gospel is Non-Fiction in Toronto

The Toronto Public Library has 8 copies of the Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, and guess what collection it’s under?
Non-fiction! Hooray!
By the way, why don’t authors bitch when their books are being “illegally shared” at the library? How is that not analogous to a musicians work being shared on the internet? You have my permission to buy and share the Gospel with as many people as you like. Spread the Word.
Council of Europe recognizes Pastafarianism
Published by Bobby Henderson October 21st, 2007 in General FSM news and Recognition. 42 CommentsFantastic news: The Council of Europe has recognized our religion.
In its September 17, 2007 report, the parliamentary assembly mentions us.
Article 52:
In this connection, in accordance with the principle of an open attitude to the alternative theories advocated by the scientific creationists, and in order to show the illogicality of teaching intelligent design alongside the theory of evolution, a movement has, ironically, developed in the United States. The so-called Pastafarian movement supports the theory of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Pastafarianism is a parody on religion created in response to the decision of the Kansas State Board of Education to permit the teaching of intelligent design in science courses on an equal footing with the theory of evolution. According to Pastafarianism, an invisible and omniscient being called the Flying Spaghetti Monster created the universe in one day. The supporters of Pastafarianism are demanding the same place in the school curricula as intelligent design. Full of irony, this pseudo-religion is setting a trend and the cult is spreading.
I object to the terms “parody”, “pseudo-religion” and “cult”, but as I have said before, the first step towards mainstream recognition is recognition as a “joke”. Mormonism took this route. Scientiology is still in the joke stage.
Official Recognition by Facebook
Published by Bobby Henderson October 18th, 2007 in General FSM news and Recognition. 26 CommentsI received this message from Will:
I found this while updating a certain profile of mine of a certain website called Facebook. You probably already know of this website as it is quite well known to the masses. You have probably already seen what I am emailing you to show you, but in case you haven’t I feel the need to send you an email anyway. On with showing. Attached is a .jpg file with a screen shot of my computer displaying the editing of my Facebook profile. I was changing my religious views to “Pastafarian” (naturally) and in doing so when I had only typed in four letters “PAST” the website went on to finish it with a choice of “Pastafarian”. I found this quite amusing.
p.s. When I began typing in “Rast” to see if they finish that as “Rastafarian” nothing came up. Which means, if Facebook was the authority on religions in the world, you’d have the Rastafarian’s beat. Congrats!

Thanks, facebook. I wonder if Myspace snubs us because of that FSM virus that was infecting their users pages – even though it was almost certainly created by someone who was not a Pastafarian.
In praise of an alternate creation theory
Published by Bobby Henderson January 7th, 2007 in General FSM news, Recognition and Spread the Word. 249 Comments
Leslie Scrivener has written an excellent article, In praise of an alternate creation theory, in the Toronto Star.
From the department of one scientific theory is as good as another, comes the Flying Spaghetti Monster.
The theory goes like this: the Earth and all living things were created by a Supreme Being, the Flying Spaghetti Monster, and though there are no witnesses to creation, there are written accounts of it.
In time, men and women heard of the spaghetti monster and came to worship him. And as the word spread, a gospel was written and churches were established in his name.
And artists, inspired by his word, drew his image – a tangled mass of pasta, with two generous meatballs, and googly eyes protruding from stalks.
Since the Flying Spaghetti Monster was revealed in 2005, millions have seen his image or read about him and his teachings, on the Internet site www.venganza.org and also in a book published last year, The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

Discovery Institute – Celebrating Christmas at the Church of the FSM
Published by Bobby Henderson December 29th, 2006 in General FSM news and Recognition. 155 Comments
Casey Luskin of the Discovery Institute’s Evolution News & Views has posted an article on the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster’s treatment of the Christmas holiday.
During the holiday season, many Americans take time to seriously and respectfully reflect on Judeo-Christian religious beliefs. Not so for one website, the “Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster” (FSM), a pro-evolution satire against intelligent design. They exhibit no interest in treating Christian holidays with respect. To celebrate the season, they are selling Christmas cards which show a dead Christian fish symbol. Other Christmas Cards portray Michelangelo’s well-known “Creation of Adam” painting on the Sistene Chapel, but the FSM cards have God replaced by the “Flying Spaghetti Monster.†Another graphic promoted on the page shows a nativity scene where Jesus is replaced by the “Flying Spaghetti Monster.” I can appreciate humor, but it’s also clear that the FSM images are intended to mock traditional religion:
…
I disagree with most of what he’s saying – we are no more mocking Christian beliefs than Christians are mocking ours – but it’s still an interesting read.

happy Holiday season everyone
Published by Bobby Henderson December 1st, 2006 in General FSM news, Recognition and Spread the Word. 102 CommentsHappy Holidays!
A Holiday message from me:
It’s that time of year again. Many will be celebrating Christmas, some Hanukkah, some Kwanzaa, whatever. Pastafarians will be celebrating our holiday, named “Holiday“. And it’s not a specific date so much as it is the Holiday season, itself.
I hate to go into specifics as to what and how Pastafarians celebrate/worship. The rituals and ceremonies are not important. What is important is that Pastafarians reject dogma and formalism (the emphasis on form over content). So, there are no specific, handed-down-from-above sort of specific rituals or ceremonies. Pastafarianism is more of a state of mind than a set of rules to follow. So enjoy the Holiday season, and celebrate it in a way that is pleasing to you and those around you.
That said, I would like to point out how much Pastafarianism has spread in a remarkably short amount of time. A few years ago, you’d be wished a “Merry Christmas” by everyone. Now, by our schools, businesses, goverment, on tv – everywhere – what do you hear? We’re not offered the Christian greeting “Merry Christmas“, but instead a happy “Holiday” season. Holiday, is of course OUR Pastafarian holiday, and it’s amazing to see how it’s been accepted, embraced even, by so many people.
Consider this: the Washington Post reports that a few people are upset with the White House “Christmas” cards, because they fail to mention Christmas. Instead, and not surprisingly based on President Bush’s presumed closet-Pastafarianism, the 1.4 million recipients of the White House “Christmas” card are wished a happy “Holiday season”. Say what you will about our president, but to send a Pastafarian propaganda message to over a Million people, in defiance of the Christian Evangelists who are supposedly his base – that took a huge set. I was so Touched that I took the time to write Mr. Bush a note. Click to read it, if you want.
So, that’s all. Have a safe and happy Holiday season. Remember that Flying Spaghetti Monster merchandise is not only fashionable, but also serves as propaganda.

This opinion article was recently published in the UK’s Sunday Times:
I don’t believe in God. I do, however, believe in the Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM), an invisible and undetectable being who resembles spaghetti and meatballs and created the world. I am a devout Pastafarian.
That’s a pretty good start for an article. It then goes on to discuss other religions, etc. Read the whole thing here.
Quill Awards update
Published by Bobby Henderson October 11th, 2006 in General FSM news and Recognition. 22 CommentsWe went to the Quills last night, held at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. Unfortunately, The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster did not win. Tyler Perry’s Don’t Make a Black Woman Take Off Her Earrings won the Humor category, as well as Book of the Year. It was still a fun night though, and very surreal. Our table was between Donald Trump’s and Suzanne Somers’ tables. The ceremony took place in the Milstein Hall of Ocean Life, under a full-size Blue Whale suspended from the ceiling. I’ll try to put up some pictures soon.
Was the world created by god, evolution or pasta?
Published by Bobby Henderson October 5th, 2006 in General FSM news, Recognition and Spread the Word. 339 CommentsSimon Singh reviews The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster by Bobby Henderson.
The popularity of Intelligent Design over the past decade has been profoundly depressing for anybody who cares about science and rational thought. Supporters claim that some aspects of nature are so complicated that they cannot be explained by evolution, and therefore they conclude the existence of an entity who must have designed living beings. Although the criticisms of evolution are generally flawed and exaggerated, Intelligent Design is being taken seriously by many educationalists. …
Richard Dawkins
Published by Bobby Henderson October 4th, 2006 in General FSM news, Recognition and Spread the Word. 142 CommentsWorld-famous science author Professor Richard Dawkins, during an interview about his new book The God Delusion, mentions the Flying Spaghetti Monster. (Around 1:50).

It seems that he’s saying the existence of the Christian God is as likely as the existence of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, and that you can’t disprove either. Perhaps he’s not aware of the evidence we’ve gathered in support of the existence of the FSM, and all the academic endorsements, etc. Or, maybe he’s tentative about revealing his true faith, Pastafarianism.
*update* – I Just found an interesting comment:
Regarding your suspicion of Dawkins’ closet Pastafarianism. I quote from The God Delusion, p53:
“I am delighted to see that The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster has now been published as a book, to great acclaim. I haven’t read it myself, but who needs to read a gospel when you just *know* it’s true?”
I’d say that’s evidence for Dawkins’ Pastafarianism at least as strong as the Global Temperature/Pirates correlation, wouldn’t you?
*update 2* – Further evidence of Richard Dawkins’ Pastafarian beliefs: On today’s NPR Science Friday radio show, Professor Dawkins again mentions the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Link to the radio show.
Here’s another good video of Richard Dawkins.
