Thanks for your comments about the Flying Spaghetti Monster and all the supporters who have sent their support to members of the Kansas Board of Education. I am supporting the recommendations of the science committee and am currently in the minority. I think your theory is wonderful and possibly some of the majority members will be willing to support it.

Thanks again,

Janet Waugh District 1

Dear Mr. Henderson, Thanks for your message. Thanks for the laugh. Your web site is fascinating. I will add your theory to a long list of alternative theories I intend to introduce when it is appropriate. I am practicing how to do this with a straight face which is difficult since it’s such a ridiculous subject; it is also very sad that we are even having the discussion.

I will be one of the four member minority who will be voting against the flawed science standards currently being proposed by the six member majority.

Sincerely,

Sue Gamble

Dear Mr. Henderson,

In the midst of the sad circumstances of having our science standards lowered, you and your legion of fellow FSM followers have offered wonderful comic relief. Rather than the form letters which we often receive on other topics, each FSM letter has been clever and unique. I responded to several at first, but now there have just been too many. I am a member of the Kansas State Board of Education and have voted repeatedly to maintain excellent science standards. Last week was the vote to send a new draft (written by the 6 conservative members) out for external review. The four of us on the board who are moderates were in the minority on the vote. The group of science teachers and university professors who had written the original standards (before they were changed) have now asked that their names be withdrawn from the document. The new version changes the very definition of science from “seeking natural explanations” to “seeking logical explanations”. That is why I think FSMism is able to be included. It is as “logical” as any other theory.

The final vote on the standards will be in October. We will be in Lawrence, Kansas for that meeting. Those of us who are moderates on the board are trying to have the meeting in the Natural History Museum at the University of Kansas. We think that would be an appropriate setting for the occasion. We welcome you to be in attendance.

We have received thousands of emails from scientists around the world. At first, they all tried to explain good science to us. After the vote last week, however, they have resorted to calling us hillbillies and morons. And those are the nice letters!

Thank you for adding levity to this situation. You have developed quite a following. I was wondering if we could reverse the effects of global warming if we started breeding pirates.

Sincerely,
Carol Rupe

P.S. I ordered a Kansas Museum of Science t-shirt. I may just have to wear it to a board meeting.

Thank you for the support for our Supreme being. We have long been pleading for acceptance of our faith. Reasoning that any God only exists in the imagination of his/hers followers, based on a generally accepted historical document which only merit is that it is old, I would like to emphasize that it is only a matter of time (say about 2000 years or so) to get the FSM scriptures the same value as any other ‘religious’ document. OF course this is the true test of the Supreme FSM, to create a world which to everyone seems to be billions of years old AND at the same time giving us his scriptures which seem to be very new, but that are in fact the oldest scriptures in existence. Praise be FSM.

    To-Mrs. Kathy Martin
It is a serious offense to mock FSM, well not really. We don’t believe in your god, so you don’t have to believe in our FSM. But please, don’t say it’s a serious offense to mock your god, because we don’t even think he is real.

Even though i can understand the ideas of these school board memebers and how they think this religion is….well…funny….is it not wrong to laugh at another persons religion…to be honest if we want to believe in something like this there is nothing that says we cant and to laugh at us is a discrimination and a mockery of what some people might actually belive, being if that is true. If you look at all religions, more than not, believe in a absoult power, hindus, Jews, catholic, Church of Christ, ect. To laugh at this and insult it like Mrs. Sue Gamble - District 2 did..even though it was 3yrs ago..i just want to point out the fact that its not right. YES we do have our rights to opinion but if you cant talk about a religion with a modest appearance then dont try at all. I would rather see a religion ignored then made into a joke, and i say that for all thoughts and beliefs.
    Thanks,
    Daniel

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of people who suppress the truth by their unrighteousness, because what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world his invisible attributes – his eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, because they are understood through what has been made. So people are without excuse. For although they knew God, they did not glorify him as God or give him thanks, but they became futile in their thoughts and their senseless hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for an image resembling mortal human beings or birds or four-footed animals or reptiles. Therefore God gave them over in the desires of their hearts to impurity, to dishonor their bodies among themselves. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie and worshiped and served the creation rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.

Wow. It’s a good thing the Bible is completely fictitious.

This is a fantastic idea. It’s about time someone did something about the commonly accepted teaching of Creationism in Science rooms. And I also agree with you from the standpoint that Creationism can be taught, but never as a scientific theory. Save that for history class.

I can’t believe people get angry at this. I’m a christian, and i find this most humorous… The angry people are like the people who go to see sci-fi movies and then point out that something is “impossible”, i.e. “luke lifted that rock over his head using the force? thats impossible” or “how could he breathe in space there’s no air”. We know! Can’t we just enjoy this for the humor that it is, and let thos who maybe going to hell worry about if they’re going to hell?

  15. 995 Francesc Feb 19th, 2008 at 3:29 am

    @Steve S
ok, invisble, powerful, inmortal… what else? I can also quote:

The Dragon In My Garage by Carl Sagan:
    […]
Now, what’s the difference between an invisible, incorporeal, floating dragon who spits heatless fire and no dragon at all? If there’s no way to disprove my contention, no conceivable experiment that would count against it, what does it mean to say that my dragon exists? Your inability to invalidate my hypothesis is not at all the same thing as proving it true. Claims that cannot be tested, assertions immune to disproof are veridically worthless, whatever value they may have in inspiring us or in exciting our sense of wonder. What I’m asking you to do comes down to believing, in the absence of evidence, on my say-so.

The only thing you’ve really learned from my insistence that there’s a dragon in my garage is that something funny is going on inside my head. You’d wonder, if no physical tests apply, what convinced me. The possibility that it was a dream or a hallucination would certainly enter your mind. But then, why am I taking it so seriously? Maybe I need help. At the least, maybe I’ve seriously underestimated human fallibility.
    […]

So, we know our Creator was the FSM, not a god “resembling mortal human beings ” as yours

“what can be known about God ” equals 0, as nowadays “known” is not “believed”. I can only known -better “supose”- if there are proofs (real proofs, not collective hallucinations). Religion is a matter of faith

your credulity is astonishing. I hope we can discuss that at heaven, near a beer volcano

The FSM came to me in a dream and shew’d to me things wonderful to see.
He showed me the meatball center that he put in each and every planet, hidden deep from the prying eyes of man, he revealed to me the translucent veil of Romano cheese that differentiates a follower of FSM from one who has not yet come to the Marinara.
The world will know that pirates are indeed necessary and sufficient, lets just hope this knowledge comes before the polar bears have no wear to run.

I’m glad I found this religion, I would usually have to resort to using my half-gallon milk jug as a god in my religious debates. Flying Pasta is so much better :)

Brilliant! I love it. I first heard about this religion in Richard Dawkings ‘The God Delusion’ and it’s as good as I thought it would be. I’m and Athiest going to a catholic school and if theres one religion i’d like to be part of it’s this one. I’m converting and telling my R.E. teacher as soon as the half term break ’s over. I wander if I can get any of my friends to convert……

Purchase the Gospel

An elaborate spoof on Intelligent Design, The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is neither too elaborate nor too spoofy to succeed in nailing the fallacies of ID. It's even wackier than Jonathan Swift's suggestion that the Irish eat their children as a way to keep them from being a burden, and it may offend just as many people, but Henderson, described elsewhere as a 25-year-old "out-of-work physics major," puts satire to the same serious use that Swift did. Oh, yes, it is very funny. -- Scientific American
