Thanks for your comments about the Flying Spaghetti Monster and all the supporters who have sent their support to members of the Kansas Board of Education. I am supporting the recommendations of the science committee and am currently in the minority. I think your theory is wonderful and possibly some of the majority members will be willing to support it.

Thanks again,

Dear Mr. Henderson, Thanks for your message. Thanks for the laugh. Your web site is fascinating. I will add your theory to a long list of alternative theories I intend to introduce when it is appropriate. I am practicing how to do this with a straight face which is difficult since it’s such a ridiculous subject; it is also very sad that we are even having the discussion.

I will be one of the four member minority who will be voting against the flawed science standards currently being proposed by the six member majority.

Sincerely,

Sue Gamble

Response from Mrs. Carol Rupe – District 8 – Received 8/16/05

Subject: Kansas State Board of Education

Dear Mr. Henderson,

In the midst of the sad circumstances of having our science standards lowered, you and your legion of fellow FSM followers have offered wonderful comic relief. Rather than the form letters which we often receive on other topics, each FSM letter has been clever and unique. I responded to several at first, but now there have just been too many. I am a member of the Kansas State Board of Education and have voted repeatedly to maintain excellent science standards. Last week was the vote to send a new draft (written by the 6 conservative members) out for external review. The four of us on the board who are moderates were in the minority on the vote. The group of science teachers and university professors who had written the original standards (before they were changed) have now asked that their names be withdrawn from the document. The new version changes the very definition of science from “seeking natural explanations” to “seeking logical explanations”. That is why I think FSMism is able to be included. It is as “logical” as any other theory.

The final vote on the standards will be in October. We will be in Lawrence, Kansas for that meeting. Those of us who are moderates on the board are trying to have the meeting in the Natural History Museum at the University of Kansas. We think that would be an appropriate setting for the occasion. We welcome you to be in attendance.

We have received thousands of emails from scientists around the world. At first, they all tried to explain good science to us. After the vote last week, however, they have resorted to calling us hillbillies and morons. And those are the nice letters!

Thank you for adding levity to this situation. You have developed quite a following. I was wondering if we could reverse the effects of global warming if we started breeding pirates.

Sincerely,
Carol Rupe

P.S. I ordered a Kansas Museum of Science t-shirt. I may just have to wear it to a board meeting.

im christian and i think that the idea of pastafarianism is an.. interesting one, but the idea behind it of stopping religion being taught in science class is completely plausible. i am 110% for believing in who i think is god, but i don’t think that my faith has any place in the facts of science. he may have created all things and created all science, but that doesnt mean he is something to be taught in science.

besides, i don’t think christians should be upset at pastafarianists anyways. your logic is just as plausible as ours and i have no problem with it! :D it doesn’t mean i will believe in your god the same way as i don’t expect you to believe in mine after reading this post, but best of luck to you in all of your spaghetti-topped futures.

    Friendly greetings from Russia!

I read about your Church in the “God Delusion”, where it was mentioned by R. Dawkins. To my mind, your reaction on what is going on in the world is the only appropriate one, and since I have always been making fun of priests’ speeches and writings in which they pretend to be logical, realistic and persuasive (and also of the priests themselves, but in my case they are mostly Orthodox), I support the idea of bringing this system of religious construction to absurd.

I like developing such [surrealistic] ideas by myself and see the stiff society’s agressive or misunderstanding reaction. Some people’s agressive behaviour as a respond to some commentary on some things seems to be weird while these people make shameless efforts to affect

Of course, I regard as unthinkable any doubts that the universe was truly created by the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

Hello. I am a recent convert to FSM, and I have never been happier than I am now. I thought I was lost. Then, I was touched by his warm, loving limb-o-linguini. And, as I gazed into his ever-loving meatballs, slowly dripping the red sauce of Existence and Love, I knew I had found Him.

Enough of this rhetoric! Your “God,” is a fabrication and an abomination! How many have died in the name of his Noodly Appendage? None! HE is a Peaceful and Loving Carbohydrate!

Mrs. Kathy Martin is obviously confused. How can pastafarianism mock God, if the flying spaghetti monster IS a comparable being? perhaps she is merely pointing out what a great sense of humour the FSM has, and how He can ‘laugh at himself’.

Mrs Martin, you are highly inquisitive!

From this, let us proclaim that the FSM is an advocate of humility. It shall now be a new tenant to this great scientific movement.

I am a Christian. I believe in God and I believe in Jesus Christ. I also believe in the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Religion has no place in science class. Intelligent Design is religion. I believe the bible is teaching guide to a moral code of ethics, rather than straight facts, however, some of the genealogy in the bible is likely correct. I do think that the Lord’s Prayer should be continued in school, as well as the county’s anthem, but not in science class either.

I think that trying to change the mind of Mrs. Kathy Martin is like beating a dead horse. I would like to credit the correct person for the following ‘near’ quote, but I cannot find it. I heard it on the television program, Criminal Minds, and it is so true:

“Those who are not ruled by logic, will never be conquered by it.”

If they could be ruled by logic, this discussion would not exist.

Long live the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

Your comment appears well written and thought out, but I must protest the fact that you say that you believe in the Flying Spaghetti Monster but want the lord’s prayer said in schools – pushing religious beliefs on people violates the eight I’d Really You Rather Didn’ts. Teaching people about religion in social studies is not the same thing as advocating a particular religion with prayer. I applaud you for realizing that religion has no place in science class, but that’s not the only thing that we’re about; we want full religious equality in all public arenas, and we will not stop until we get it.

Melody, it’s nice to hear from a Christian who actually has taken the time to understand what Pastafarianism is about. Nevertheless, I must disagree with you on one point. The Lord’s Prayer has no place in public school. If my tax dollars are paying for it, and I’m any other religion than some sect of christianity, that means I’m being forced to pay for something that’s against my personal religious beliefs. It’s also unconstitutional, and I’m surprised no one has challenged it on those grounds.

As a seeker of truth, I see Pastafarianism is the only religion that makes any sense. God, Budda, Jesus, Krishna, Ala, none of them have noodly appendages, so they could not have created the universe, and we all know that pirates cause global warming. Public schools and all schools should not teach religious beliefs though. As it painfully obvious, all American schools should be focusing on reading, writing, spelling and grammar.

Religion is a private matter and must remain private and kept in secret (even Jesus said “when you pray, pray in secret so your right hand does not know what the left hand is doing”) as one religion does not fit the need of all people. Science, on the other hand, is the same for all people in all nations at all times, and thus has a right to speak in any setting. But science is provable, while religion is not. Science is empirical and religion is not. Science is necessary for the well-being and enrichment of man in all areas, while religion is not.

    Yo.
I believe in Jesus and in evolution both.
The fact of evolution can’t disprove God.
The whole evolution vs. intelligent design argument is lacking.
Both evolution and old testament-literalists only see part of reality.
    Get an open mind.

It’s when you’re arrogant enough to think we’re the ones who are going to find all the answers that you decide God doesn’t exist. Every generation thinks their modern age has it figured out. Learn some history, get some humility,
    and Christians:
Jesus said, “And all people will know you are my disciples if you love one another.” The best evangelism that exists is what God said from the beginning: “Love God and love your neighbor”. And that’s the entire Bible in a nutshell, right there. And what this sad hopeless world needs.

  38. 1338 - Hanna - May 4th, 2009

    P.S. Dr Arthur Frederick Ide,

You quoted wrong; you mixed two different quotes into one! :).

Jesus said, when you give money, don’t do it in front of others to look good like hypocrites do, but in secret and from your heart; that’s the kind of giving God likes. ie, “But when you give to the poor, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing” Matthew 6:3

About prayer, he said, “But you, when you pray, go into your closet, close your door and pray to your Father who is hidden, and your Father who sees what is hidden [done in secret] will reward you.”

It’s part of the anti-hypocrisy mission Jesus took up against the Jewish religious elite. Next time you quote, look it up if you’re unsure.

(Of course it doesn’t make you a better Christian whether you go into a closet or whatever, you’re just supposed to be good inside, not good only on the outside.)

Haha I know this isn’t the place to put a Bible lesson, but you guys would have much better arguments if you knew what you were knocking down. Otherwise it’s a straw man argument, and that is just intellectually dishonorable. And as scientific people, isn’t that against your informal morality?

When you say REALITY, what are you talking about? The physical world which can be observed, tested, etc? In that case, the literalists ignore anything that contradicts their beliefs.

There are questions that can only be properly addressed by science, and there are questions that can only be properly addressed by philosophy. It is very important that anybody who poses a question knows which category the question belongs in and why it belongs there. This division into categories is covered in courses on Critical Thinking. People who do not understand Critical Thinking and how it works do not understand one of the basic tools of academic scholarship.

It's even wackier than Jonathan Swift's suggestion that the Irish eat their children as a way to keep them from being a burden, and it may offend just as many people, but Henderson, described elsewhere as a 25-year-old "out-of-work physics major," puts satire to the same serious use that Swift did. Oh, yes, it is very funny. -- Scientific American
