Thanks for your comments about the Flying Spaghetti Monster and all the supporters who have sent their support to members of the Kansas Board of Education. I am supporting the recommendations of the science committee and am currently in the minority. I think your theory is wonderful and possibly some of the majority members will be willing to support it.
Thanks again,

Dear Mr. Henderson, Thanks for your message. Thanks for the laugh. Your web site is fascinating. I will add your theory to a long list of alternative theories I intend to introduce when it is appropriate. I am practicing how to do this with a straight face which is difficult since it’s such a ridiculous subject; it is also very sad that we are even having the discussion.
I will be one of the four member minority who will be voting against the flawed science standards currently being proposed by the six member majority.
Sincerely,
Sue Gamble

Subject: Kansas State Board of Education
Dear Mr. Henderson,
In the midst of the sad circumstances of having our science standards lowered, you and your legion of fellow FSM followers have offered wonderful comic relief. Rather than the form letters which we often receive on other topics, each FSM letter has been clever and unique. I responded to several at first, but now there have just been too many. I am a member of the Kansas State Board of Education and have voted repeatedly to maintain excellent science standards. Last week was the vote to send a new draft (written by the 6 conservative members) out for external review. The four of us on the board who are moderates were in the minority on the vote. The group of science teachers and university professors who had written the original standards (before they were changed) have now asked that their names be withdrawn from the document. The new version changes the very definition of science from “seeking natural explanations” to “seeking logical explanations”. That is why I think FSMism is able to be included. It is as “logical” as any other theory.
The final vote on the standards will be in October. We will be in Lawrence, Kansas for that meeting. Those of us who are moderates on the board are trying to have the meeting in the Natural History Museum at the University of Kansas. We think that would be an appropriate setting for the occasion. We welcome you to be in attendance.
We have received thousands of emails from scientists around the world. At first, they all tried to explain good science to us. After the vote last week, however, they have resorted to calling us hillbillies and morons. And those are the nice letters!
Thank you for adding levity to this situation. You have developed quite a following. I was wondering if we could reverse the effects of global warming if we started breeding pirates.
Sincerely,
Carol Rupe
P.S. I ordered a Kansas Museum of Science t-shirt. I may just have to wear it to a board meeting.

I am concerned by Kathy’s response about mocking god. A serious offense is to mock science with god, which is what she is doing. It just amazes me how many Christian conservative fundies are willing to dump logic for believing the earth was created by some Sky Daddy. What’s worse to me is that there is a creationist museum that is open and accepting visitors, thousands go and are assaulted by obvious lies about the world being created by god. Furthermore, there are Christians who enter museums now and dispute carbon dating of fossils, saying the earth is only 6000 years old and dinosaurs walked when humans did. The annoyance of this bullshit is like sandpaper, because there are people who really believe it.
It’s a serious offense to mock god, indeed. I wouldn’t mock god if the stories didn’t beg mocking.

I don’t like the heavy adspace and T’shirt buying this church experiences So I shall excommunicate myself and form my own Sect cause i state i am its true believer – The Orthodox Church of the FSM – Moderate Tithe will be introduced and my image will be at his right hand…thats what the Holiness wants….

@ – Meisha #1254,
I’m equally concerned about this country’s abandonment of it’s spirit of exploration. I’m afraid that it’s been systematically squashed for the past eight years. Have you seen the book called “The Authoritarians”, that I’ve been recommending here for some time? It’s free on-line, and it’s a good story of these sheep. http://home.cc.umanitoba.ca/~altemey/ . I also heard a good program called “The Darwin Debates” last week on Public Radio. Here’s the link; I think you’ll enjoy it. http://www.wpr.org/book/090208b.cfm . Keep up the good work. We have to support each other when it gets discouraging. It’s not our teaching skills that are lacking; it’s the fears of the sheep who are described so well by Bob Altmeyer that can’t be changed. I’ve been having a nice conversation with – jeremykeys on this and the Comment-on-the-Open-Letter thread about these fearful nut cases.

There are classes of questions that are appropriate for science to address, and there are classes of questions that philosophy is equipped to address. There are very few questions that are appropriate for both to approach. Science asks “What”, and “How” questions, but it ignores “Why”, and “Whether” questions. Religion and its literature affirm that the universe was created. It attempts to say why that creation took place. Nowhere does it attempt to detail how the creation happened. If the religiosos were to stick to the questions that were appropriate to their realm of expertise, there would be no need for us to publicly confront them with the incontrovertible divine truth of the existence of The Flying Spaghetti Monster. They have brought this entire controversy on themselves, and they don’t even know that they are the ones who are asking inappropriate questions.

After being an agnostic (or spagnostic as you call it), and also having been in touch with many major world religions including Christianity, Hinduism, and Islam, I’ve really quit on it now. I believe the existence of the universe necessitates a creative intelligence. And I did not have to be influenced by external motivators to come to that conclusion.
Honestly, if there’s no god creative intelligence, then existence has no purpose – one might as well commit suicide.

I’m sticking with a belief that there might be an afterlife, but there’s no omnipotent god watching over us all and we are the products of evolution.

@ – Varghese Mathew #1263,
I don’t understand, and I wish you would explain to me, Why is it necessary that existence has any purpose? I find it exciting that I happen to be here for this instant of time. I can make a purpose of doing justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly with the mystery of the universe.

@ Varghese Mathew said, “Honestly, if there’s no god creative intelligence, then existence has no purpose – one might as well commit suicide.”
There you have it. The essence of existential angst. The existence of a “god creative intelligence,” as you put it, does not necessarily provide any purpose for life. It is the insistence of the christians who want to teach ID that is worrying. It is the christian version of god that they want to impose on science, not just some intelligent first cause. If they get to do it, then we should, too. Evolution, however, does not deal with intention. It deals with process.
For Pastafarians, the FSM created the universe (after having been “over served”) for his own purposes, not ours. It is our desire to live a life such that we gain entry into heaven, thus access to the fresh beer volcano near the stripper factory, but we do not seek to impose our beliefs on others, nor does the FSM care if we believe in Him or not.

Varghese Mathew (#1263): Who says everything has a purpose? Where is that written? And if you feel that way, it’s up to YOU to find that purpose. I have, and it doesn’t include bowing and scraping to an all-Powerful (or at least all-Vain) deity.

I love pastafarianism. I am a Christian Buddhist who is a believer in science. This is a helthy wholesome wy to discuss the impact of religion on society, it is not the possession of religions tht hurts us, its our relationship with our faith. We must be as happy to disprage the Great Pasta as we are to question our own beliefs, religion or scientific. We must leave something out, not be so deeply involved s to become blinded with rage and anger. There are view points to be put across delicately, Dawkins approach is untenable and uncivilized, but worth reviewing as Darwin, Pastafrianism, AIDS vaccintion, cancer, statins, health, health care, the definition of family etc. We must grow within nd outside of our faith by understnding the context of being a modern human ie we hve to co-habit or it all goes horribly wrong. Change the world, start with the self. Our children need to know this so please tell them about the others we are here with. I am now a Christian Buddhist Pastafarian.

Dearest Mrs. Kathy Martin.
Your reply to the FSM website clearly illustrates your lack of knowledge of the American Constitution, one that you claim you can accurately teach. I can mock anything that I want, and so can you. Also, by stating that mocking “god” is a serious offense you acknowledge that ID is not based on science, but on religion. We were simply writing a letter promoting equal teachings and you effectively have shot your own argument in the foot. Go read the Constitution and get back to us when you learn to be rational, and can at least make a claim to be knowledgable.
Thank you,
From Solon, OH.

I am a Christian and I have no problems with your theory of FSMism. Is it so much a problem to believe that something other than the image of an old beautiful man floating on a cloud created the heavens and the earth. there is an astounding level of logic to almost all of your theories. Now, I am not going to give up belief in my Christ because you have logic, just as I would not expect you to pray to my God due to scientific findings of his life. It’s all about purpose and principle and I find it saddening that people who call themselves Christians are coming at you with anger and hatred simply for offering an alternative to our theories. I find that that goes directly against one of our major beliefs of “love thy neighbor. Good luck in life and I hope you find your big past bowl in the sky, or wherever it is!?!?

I don’t understand how stupid you people are. I mean, just consider the evidence for Global Warming. You argument’s mainstay is that there are fewer pirates here now than there were, say 500 yarrrs ago. I not only refute such a blasphemy, I will go so far as to repudiate your theory of Global Warming.
There are more Pirates in India and China and Brazil than there are people in Russia(or for that matter, the U.S.A). So you see, instead of the global population of pirates decreasing, we are witnessing a titanic surge of buccaneers in teh interwebz. No accurate surveys have been conducted so far on the number of us pirates, but Microsoft estimates there are as many as 600 million blackbeards ind the abovesaid countries alone.
And do not underestimate us privateers, for we are not afraid of your FSM god. We do not forgive. We do not forget.
For We Are Legion. Viva la Pirat brayn.

Here in Australia, although generally speaking there is little difference between normal Australians and normal Americans…..the average Australian finds it hard to believe that so many Americans really believe the things that your fundamentalist Christians believe.
The rediculous things they do often show up on our TV shows with a strong sense of ridicule aimed at them. And our comedy shows get great material from American religion. Sad and dangerous is the fact that the followers actually believe the stuff.

@ Rampand: I think you have totally misunderstood what we mean by “Pirates”. Internet pirates don’t count. Neither do the modern day pirates of Somalia and the other countries surrounding the Indian ocean and other seas of today. The Pirates we are talking about are the ones from 300 plus years ago. Scouring the seas on wind powered vessels with a code of honour that todays pirates simply don’t seem to have. As for stupid, no we’re not. Perhaps you should check out this entire web-site and find out just exactly what we are all about. We’re not out to piss anyone off, we’re just trying to live our lives peacefully and prevent religion being taught in science class at school when it should be taught in religion class. Religion trying to mask itself as science is simply wrong.

The followers of the FSM owe you and your cutlass wielding kind a huge debt of thanks. As we all know pirate numbers have increased dramatically in recent years. And by staggering co-incidence the globe has started cooling slightly (really, it has). There can be no better proof of the good work you are doing, keep it up!!

I cannot for the life of me understand why otherwise seemingly intelligent human beings can’t discern between the how (science) and the why (theology). The Big Bang Theory (the how)is a scientific model of the development of the universe, yet, in a world of infinite possibilities, it is just as likely to have been the the inevitable outcome of heat and density as it is a result of god farting (the why).
That said, I find it interesting to note that the Zuruhujao, an indigenous people of the Amazon basin with a propensity toward developing esophogeal reflux, worship a similar (albeit gluten-free in white sauce) deity called Alfredo.
