I wrote the Open Letter sometime around January of 2005 and posted it online several months later after receiving no reply from the Kansas School Board. Within days of posting it online, the letter became an internet phenomenon, generating tens of thousands of visits each day, as well as personal responses from the school board members themselves. To date (August 2006), the venganza website has received upwards of 350 million hits, and somewhere in the proximity of 15 million unique visits. This website operates on a dedicated server and uses 600 – 800 GB/month in bandwidth. I’ve received over 15,000 emails in response to the letter.

The letter, after being blogged heavily for months, was printed in several large newspapers, including the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Chicago Sun Times, and many others. The newspaper articles caught the attention of book publishers, and at one point there were six publishers interested in getting the Word of the Flying Spaghetti Monster out to the public. In the end, the Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster was released by Random House in March of 2006.

It’s now been over a year since the FSM phenomenon started. I hope that a year from now we will be recognized as a legitimate religious organization, with all the same benefits *and tax loopholes* that the mainstream religions enjoy.

Please leave me a comment on the Letter, the FSM movement as a whole, or whatever you like. Thanks,

-Bobby

    BrookeScaresLittleKids,

I appreciate your sentiment and saying that we all have the right to believe whatever. I think that you may still be missing the point of our satirical little site though… Read the about section, and then enjoy His Noodley goodness :)

And, global warming is not a fact. Temperatures have been decreasing over the past 10 years. Plenty of actual scientists have debunked it. Al Gore does not qualify as a scientist. Not saying that there is not fluctuation of temperatures on the planet, but the planet has its own cyclical thing going on that we have no way of understanding. We haven’t been around long enough. And I have no idea what this had to do with your main point anyway (which was a good one!)… Totally random.

    In Peace and Sauciness,
    D&WC

    @ 3597 – Ober Herndon – ,

You seem to have neglected to read and understand the Open Letter, and the “About” tab material as you were directed when you entered this site.

Our mission is the exclusion of religious mythology from public school science curricula. What is taught in private schools is entirely the business of each private school.

Remember that you are misusing the word “Theory” by broadening its meaning to include guesses and hypotheses. The word as used in science and in the public schools must be limited to a framework that organizes and explains facts and phenomena by repeated tests and experiments.

-Bobby, why are you so afraid of Creationism?

The Kansas State School Board should not of replied to such a childish letter addressing a very serious matter. Intelligent Design is what it is, another theory. Bobby, can you or Science disprove Intelligent Design? No you cannot, nor can science prove Intelligent Design. Theory is theory!-

Bypassing scientific research, sneaking creationism into schools because it FAILED, again, and again. In the sciences, and in the courts. Lying and cheating for your God. Nothing more.

Intelligent design is NOT science, by the DEFINITION of science. Teaching it in a science class is akin to teaching flat-earthism in geography.

Ober Herndon (#3597): You obviously are new here. When you try to balance ID against Evolution since they are “both theories”, you’re making a serious but perhaps common mistake.

Yes, Evolution is a Theory. A Scientific Theory; meaning it’s generally accepted as true since it can be subjected to tests and observation. Intelligent Design, on the other hand, satisfies neither criteria, making it a wild supposition, NOT a theory. Once you actually observe God creating something, get back to us, will you?

Creationism IS a theory. It is NOT a theory backed up by evidence.

There are thousands of theories in the world. I may have a theory that little fairies sneak into my room at night and dance around my head. But do we teach that to our children in school? No, of course not.

For the same reason, Creationism should be taught in churches, not in schools, and especially not in science class. Science, which comes from the latin root scio, to know, is a discipline of that which we have evidence for. Evolution is backed up by genetics research, by fossil records, and by observation. Creationism is a fairy tale dreamed up hundreds of years ago.

obviously my name is a screen name but I heard about this “religion” from my English teacher and decided to check it out. I must say, it is quite an amusing “religion”. Sorry if that offends you but hell if you can say God doesn’t exist then why the hell can’t I make fun of you’re
“religion”. Sorry Catholic half escaped. I agree that creatism should only be taught in church. And actually I don’t completly believe in creatism myself. Things like Adam and Eve can’t be possible or else we would eventually all be imbreeding and we’ve seen first hand what that does to us. On the other hand I think God maybe had a little to do with how we came to be. Here’s my Theory and yes it has no evidence but that’s what faith is, right? Anyways I think that God decided one day to create the universe and all the planets and stars, whatever, then he put the VERY first cell on the Earth and let things go from there. Now the Scientific has evidence….to a point. They still can’t provide evidence to where the first cell started. And that puts a little problem on everything else, now doesn’t it.

quite possibly the most important religious document produced since Martin Luther nailed his treatse to the cathedral doors. It is said that if you can imagine it then it is so. Then the Flying Spaghetti Monster has been willed into existence by His followers. Those that argue against His existence ignore the fact that reality is what we make it. And now reality includes the glorious touch of a noodly appendage.

    Bobby,

The open letter indicates “We have several lengthy volumes explaining all details of His power.” Volumes as in plural. How about another gospel of the FSM?? Not that a religion could be influenced by money (hahaha!) but another gospel would not only be self-fullfilling a prophesy (as religions do) but bring in some big $$$! That would help a lot towards the holy pirate ship, and to my amusement, er, I mean faith.

    Just a suggestion.

    Church of FSM,

First, I love spaghetti. So, the fact that you put spaghetti high on the list of priorities is great. However, it is sad that people could be so deluded as you appear to be. I know LSD may appear to be enjoyable for the moment, but it really is doing you no lasting, long-term good. (Oh, maybe it;s meth. That’s not great for you either though.)

The wonderful thing is that when a group of people manifests themselves to be corrupt in there minds, it serves to show individual like me, who (thank God) have the truth, that some swine aren’t worth throwing pearls to. Pearls can be reserved for those who have control of their faculties.

Just do this for me: next time your in between injections, take a minute and be thankful that Christianity has given you a country where you can practice your lifestyle without the fear of being jailed, tortured, or executed.

    Thank God for America.

I will probably now inevitably think about you every time I eat spaghetti. But that’s alright. It will remind me of how blessed I am.

ok, so I read the hate mail and through the use of MS Word and the copy replace function I have taken the liberty of replacing “Flying Spaghetti Monster” with “JESUS” or “CHRISTIANITY” where appropriate. I think it’s worth rereading again. at least some of it because this guy starts making no sense. But that’s what you would expect from someone that believes in popular occult and superstition i guess… Just because someone believes something really really really really hard, so hard they are willing to kill and die for, doesn’t make it true. It just means you believe in it.

“OH MY FUCKING GOD! THIS IS SO FUNNY! Seriously, I feel bad for the people who have been brainwashed to believe in this bullshit! Come on! I’m not gonna have a 10 pages long document telling that this religion is bullshit (just as all other religions), but come on! CHRISTIANITY is invented by humans! JESUS! Just think about it for a second… JESUS. Do you know why this stupid religion was made? Because some guys wanted to show the world how easy it is to brainwash idiots. When it was published, the brainwashed people refused to accept it, and kept on believing in fucking, JESUS! Oh my god! And of course the amount of pirates is sinking! THEY ARE BEING KILLED! And of course the temperature is rising! WE ARE ON THE TOP OF A TEMPERATURE CURVE, and in about 100 years, the temperature will start to sink again. But there will still be as many “pirates”. This is all so fucking bullshit. Come on. In one million years from now, some students making a cult for fun is gonna say that the world was made 100 years ago or something similar to this shit. But come on. We are alive now, aren’t we? But in a thousand years (or 50) this religion will be forgotten, and people will start believing in other stupid religions, such as “The Farting Chocolate Dude”. And come on. Muslims and christians believe so much in god and stuff that they would kill themselves for their “gods”. But you know that those religions are bullshit. They know that the JESUS is bullshit. Ok, now I’m gonna guess that your name is “Mark” and now let’s pretend “Mark” is the person reading this. Mark first believes in god, and he believes so much in it that he would kill himself for god and jesus. Then somebody makes him believe in Allah and all that bullshit. Now Mark knows that Islam is true, and he would kill himself for allah. Then he is brainwashed to believe in the JESUS. Now he knows that god, jesus and allah is bullshit, and now he knows that the JESUS is real. COME ON! It’s not like whatever religion you believe in is the one that is right about it all. It’s not like first, god and jesus exists in some heaven, then you change religion, now god and jesus doesn’t exist anymore, now the JESUS / the farting chocolate dude is real.
Come on. It is all in your brains. You have been listening to masters in brainwashing for a long time and now you actually believe in something as stupid as a dinner invented by humans for not long ago made the fucking universe. A dinner. With meat and spice on. Come on dudes. What the fuck?
    Think again

I’m shocked by how many people who have commented here think that anyone truly believes in the FSM! (Not to insult any of you who do, of course.) To anyone appalled by the “religion” and preparing to write a nasty comment insulting the “heretics” or whatever — it’s a joke, to make a point that religion is silly. You don’t have to agree with it, but you have to admit that what they’ve done is really smart. I mean, over 3600 comments on the Open Letter! Clearly, they did something right to attract all this attention.

    Jeremy,

You mean we, FSMers should be grateful, right? Coz I don’t think all the jailed, tortured and executed non-FSMers throughout American history would feel so appreciative. Well, maybe they would. I mean, if they didn’t have the extra virgin light of His Noodlyness in their hearts, maybe life wasn’t worth living. I’m sure that’s why the Gitmo detainees welcomed their imprisonment and torture, and occsially their deaths, at the hands of God-fearing Americans.

Well here is what i think: it was actually a great idea to start a discussion like this with a silly subject.(not to insult true believers of course). a discussion like this should be held for deffinate if u ask me…to many people have died for what they ‘believe in’ and as long as there have been gods there have been people killing in his (or her) name. It freaking ridiculous (crusades, jihads,…who can keep up come on people give it a rest ur makking hystory class harder). people have been comparing religions for centuries and the FSM is a perfect idea actually…dude ur brilliant seriously lmao. But here’s how i think it is: u can compare religions all u want. THEY ARE ALL WRONG: chrisianity: in medival times they killed for a god promoting peace on earth and forgiveness…whut’s that about? now they make millions and millions of money and they tell people to give to the poor…uhm start selling some of ur expencive paintings in ur churches and i m still not gonna be tempted(me be cheapskate). jews: well people have been trying to kill em all all throughout history so i think their HAS to be something wrong with them XD. but seriously lay off the jews. they’re generally ennoying and ridiculous but w/e they can’t help being dumb enough to dress stupid in the name of something that don’t exist…muslims on the other hand are more then ennoying=> they blow ur ass up…that’s a big fucking problem, not all of em but those who do are fucking stupid. Blowing urself up for something that don’t exist, and even if it does exist…if u enter heaven the way u exit earth…try fucking 70 vergins when u blew ur dick off of course u got eternity to figure out that problem…Now on to the bhoeddists (or however u write it) these are the people that don’t take cover when people shoot at them…ok brave to stand up for something u care about so much in that manner but still…a religion that has u not fighting nor backing out of fights =>that’s a bad idea that’s just inviting people to dominate ur ass.hindous on their turn rather die of hunger then killing a holy fat ass cow. ok grats for ur character not to eat it i wouldn’t be able to do it.o wait that’s because even if they WERE my antcestors i ld still eat them: it’s called survival of the fittest DUH. i value my life over a cow’s OR an antcestor’s because it’s MINE. seriously who starts crying when somebody u don’t know or a far uncle crashes his car…nobody right…maybe if ur uncle died but since u believe in reïncarnation…he’s not really dead is he? so u didn’t kill him by eating him. Do u want to live ur life following rules that MAY get u into some paradise when u die?which is quite unlikely u ll get in…i personally rather live my life without regret and die in peace with MYSELF if some god has a problem with that let him smite me now or after i die. and i did say no regret not have fun and live in total anarchy or w/e i have my own morals. And if u want to know what i believe: here it is laws of nature…the only thing proven. Sure it’s possible something created it but if there is it’s a some kind of force not a person it would have to be something that has no direct judgement or feelings or grudge but it would have to be a self evolving thing IF it is there ( so basically a FSM is more likely then a real interventional god) any christian that finds me a heritic may deffiantly contact me for a discussion (and i mean not one of those discussions where ur main argument is: it is written by god or it says so in the bible cuz the bible is full of crap). o and if u wonder if life is worth living like my predecessor above…ask someone who was captured for false reasons, kept inside a tight security jail or cave or hut or w/e for 10 years when he comes out and is set totally free…u ll have ur answer.
(srr if i misstook jews for muslims or the other way around i always confuses those names)
and believe what u want but…don’t let it ruin ur life…life is for living not in survice of the possiblity of an afterlife…

  36. 3636 - Sheila - Sep 30th, 2009

I have the utmost respect for satire. This letter may be on of the best pieces of satirical writing that I have read in quite some time. That said, I am also a proponent of Intelligent Design being taught in schools along side Evolution. I am not a religious person. I don’t care who you worship, who you love, what you do on Sunday mornings. That is not the issue surrounding ID. I can also see how people of America would be concerned at the idea of ID being taught in schools. This country is based on many principles, one of which is freedom of religion. No one wants their child being subjected to religious teaching; no one wants Jesus, God, Buddha, or Allah shoved down their throats.

The fact is, though, that Evolution leaves a lot of questions unanswered. There are definite flaws in the carbon dating process. There are gaps in our understanding of Evolution. And no one can tell you unequivocally HOW life started. There are a lot of ideas floating around out there (I won’t use “theory” to classify these because I recognize that there is a distinctive difference between scientific theory and layman’s theory– and as the beginnings of the Universe have no test-retest reliability, none of the ideas are actually theories in the scientific sense.) One idea for the origins of the universe is that someone or something outside of the laws of physics created us (or at least gave life a jump start and then let evolution do it’s thing.)

My main problem with this letter is that it assumes that Intelligent Design is synonymous with Biblical Creationism. It is not. When schools say that they want to teach Evolution and Intelligent Design, they are not saying that they want all of the school kids to sit back and open Genesis. They want to propose that SOMETHING outside of our realm started us. In fact, to teach that this force or energy was God would be as ridiculous as teaching that it was The Flying Spaghetti Monster. Furthermore, students being taught the theory of ID would not be told what/who did the designing, simply that a theory out there states that something did. These students would be free to categorize this theory as true or false based on their understanding. Beyond that, they would be able to decide what/who did create us (if they chose to believe in ID.) In fact, teaching ID in schools would not be excluding The Flying Spaghetti Monster. The children would be able to make their own mind up on that matter.

Biblical Creationism should never be taught in America’s public school system. Intelligent Design should be at least presented as an alternative to Evolution. Under the blanket of Intelligent Design, it would not be necessary for members of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster to take the schools to court because ID does not put a name to the entity that created us.

Still, beautiful work on your satirical letter. I enjoyed it.

Evolution is very real whether your a creationist or not. There are way too many facts that support evolution to deny it. Some things we will never know. But we should continue to investigate and learn everything we can. As far as Creationism taught in any school or university, I completely disagree. It is faith based and should be learned in a church, seminary or private school if that is your choice. Taught by someone who has a passion for it. Evolution is Science and should be taught in schools and universities but the instructor should most assuredly remain neutral. I am a believer and I would not want a un-believing instructor teaching me about God and creation. My faith is my choice and if I want to learn about it, I will seek it out myself.

    Bobby,

Cannot thank you enough for your wonderful work. I have learned of “Flying Spaghetti Monsterism” only today and already have changed my personal beliefs. I plan to spread the good word of His Noodlyness everywhere I go. All these years I’ve set on the fence as an agnostic leaning toward atheism, but after visiting your web sight, I now know the truth about our universe. It’s so simple and delicious.

May you be blessed by the touch of His Noodly Appendage,

    -The Newm

    “What is God?”
I turned 68, on May 24th. When I was 17, having been raised to understand that “You don’t have to be in a building, to believe in God”, I decided that “God is Energy, after all, It’s everywhere”. Now, some five decades later, scientists in the field of “Quantum Mechanics”, with “String Theory”, have postulated that there indeed may be vibrating “Strings” of energy everywhere. Not only in interstellar, but intergalactic space as well. The other half of my postulation rests on the question: “What is thought?”. In it’s purest form, it is merely an inexplicable bit of energy carried by external means. If that is also true, then that, I believe, coupled with string theory, is the mind of God. How presumptuous is mankind to believe he can truly understand the mind, let alone interpret the will of God. If I may quote Puck: “What fools these mortals be”.

    My first time here.

I think the Open Letter is a good satirical way of ridiculizing myths that are still taken as TRUTH. Believing in Gods is one thing and having it taught at school as mandatory curricula is another. ¿Can we imagine all myths of all cultures being taught at school? I education has sense, it is education that makes sense, that can be rationally shown or scientifically demostrated. Myths are to be told privately, at home or in Church.

    Thanks

Thanks for enlightening me. It is very comforting to know that yet another ‘god’ is looking after me, or is out to destroy me, or is a lucky charm, or is after my money! Haha – this site is so funny – thanks for the humour.

I refer you to a study done of fragmentation called “Fragmentation of rods by cascading cracks: why spaghetti do not break in half”.

Figure 1 in this paper on the “dynamics of a rod fragment following initial breaking event…” looks very similar to your Global Average Temperature Vs. Number of Pirates statistics. Wow! Haha – this I thought was funny – I don’t know why, but it entertained me.

    Have a great twisted day!

Can people please learn how to use the word THEORY.

The Scientific Process dumbed down: Take a HYPOTHESIS, Conduct all experiments and observational studies that you can think of, Have others do the same thing, THEN after putting it through every test anyone can think of you have a THEORY.

A THEORY is what you get at the end of the scientific process,

A THEORY can change. If someone could put a THEORY through a test that showed it was not entirely true the theory would be altered. This is why science is self-correcting. Do not mistake self-correcting with being wrong (it is not sciences fault that the media reports science too early and incorrectly)

I don’t think I can make it any easier than that.

Misusing the word THEORY makes anything you say sound less credible, it shows SCIENTIFIC ILLITERACY. This is extremely basic science, you will spend the first week of any Junior College science class learning this. So if you don’t know this you probably either failed JC Science or never even took it.

So I’m sorry if you misuse the word theory explaining why global warming isn’t real or why God does exist and people don’t take you seriously. You do it to yourself.

Not so certain about that one, bob cobb. I think the spaghetti cat would be a disciple of Ceiling Cat but would regard the FSM as a sort of Demi God or Bodhisattva along with the Omnipotent Cheesburger. It’s one of those theological grey areas.

An elaborate spoof on Intelligent Design, The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is neither too elaborate nor too spoofy to succeed in nailing the fallacies of ID. It's even wackier than Jonathan Swift's suggestion that the Irish eat their children as a way to keep them from being a burden, and it may offend just as many people, but Henderson, described elsewhere as a 25-year-old "out-of-work physics major," puts satire to the same serious use that Swift did. Oh, yes, it is very funny. -- Scientific American
