Q: Who are you?

A: My name is Bobby Henderson. I’m 27. I grew up in Oregon and move around a lot. I have a physics degree and have successfully avoided a “real” job for years.

Q: Did you really send the Open Letter to the Kansas School Board?

A: Yes. But, I received no replies until after I posted the website online and the School Board started getting lots of emails about it. You can read some of the responses I received here.

Q: Are you an atheist / heathen / what?

A: I don’t have a problem with religion. What I have a problem with is religion posing as science. Teach Creationism in school, fine, but don’t teach it in a science classroom. And don’t change the definition of science so that you can teach these things. That’s retarded.
Supernatural explanations are by definition not science, so why would you teach them in a science classroom?

Religion, itself, isn’t bad. But it isn’t necessarily good, either. There are plenty of good Christians (and Muslims, and Buddhists, and Hindus), and plenty of bad ones.

Dogma is bad for everyone.

Q: You are making God angry.

A: I doubt it. If there’s a God, and he’s intelligent, then I would guess he has a sense of humor. And how do you know He is NOT a Flying Spaghetti Monster?

Q: Do you make money off this?

A: Yes. The Church makes money off T-shirts, car emblems, book sales, and occasionally donations. We are saving a lot of money and pretty soon here we’ll buy our first Pirate Ship which will serve as a floating church, open to all Believers.

Q: Your graph is messed up.

A: No, it’s not. The X-axis doesn’t have to represent time. And the data points don’t need to be in order. A graph is just a collection of data points, I can display them however I want. It might not be what you’re used to, but it’s not messed up. Please stop writing me emails about it (well over 200 at this point).

Q: There are more pirates now than ever. Look at the South Pacific. And song-downloading pirates, and blah blah blah.

A: Real pirates use swords (cutlasses, actually). Those “pirates” in the south pacific are guys with machine guns, cruising around in power-boats. They’re not pirates. And the song-downloading “pirates” are smelly nerds, and therefore not real pirates.

Q: Your grammar/spelling/etc is bad.

A: Yah.

Q: You’re wrong. It’s actually a linguini / mashed potato / dinosaur / elephant / whatever monster.

A: Maybe He just disguises Himself as those things. Also, you’re not funny.

Q: Can I reprint your letter?

A: Yes. Send me a link, please.

Q: Acceptible use of content?

A: It’s ok with me if you’re using the FSM images/content as long as it’s not for profit, and you’re doing it to further the Cause of the church. I.e. printing out FSM propaganda materials and distributing them is ok (and encouraged). Making FSM t-shirts, selling FSM merchandise, etc. is NOT OK.

Q: What blogging/cms software are you using?

A: The recently redesigned site is built on the Wordpress platform with the K2 template.

Q: How many members are there?

A: I don’t know. There are no membership records as such, so I can only guess based on the amount of traffic the site receives, etc. Traffic to date (September 2006) is somewhere in the vicinity of 350 million hits, and around 15 million unique visitors. Google returns close to 2 million results for the phrase “flying spaghetti monster“. So, who knows – your guess is as good as mine.

Q: Why Pirates?

A: We believe that humans evolved from pirates. Consider that humans share around 95% DNA with monkeys, and more than 99.9% DNA with pirates.

Q: Interview requests

A: I’m happy to answer your questions. I recommend you just send me your questions in an email with a subject that I’ll notice, like “INTERVIEW QUESTIONS”. You don’t need to ask permission or set up an interview for some future time, just send me the questions. Thanks.

Q: Website statistics

A: Somewhere around 10k-40k visitors per day, and somewhere around 500k-1million hits a day. Hits are extremely high because lots of people hotlink images, etc from the site. Which is fine w/me.

Emails – depends, but 50 per day is not uncommon. I have 13,839 unread emails right now (9/25/06). I’ll get to as many as I can.

Q: Why is there an FSM banner on my MySpace profile?

A: It’s a virus/worm that WAS NOT CREATED BY ME. I had nothing to do with it. I’m sorry – it caused everyone a lot of problems, and I do not approve of this sort of thing. You can remove it by following the directions here.

    Trevor asked,
    .
“How do you pray to the great FSM I’m a new convert to Pastafarianism and I just really want to know the practices. So whenever I eat I can pray to him before every meal giving thanks. And also to ask for his help whenever I’m down on my luck.”
    .
Seriously, get our Holy Scripture, “The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster,” and be sure to read the part about WWAPD (What would a Pirate do?). There are specific instructions (OK, suggestions) about what to do when you are feeling down. They are very helpful.
    .
As for the matter of practices, as far as I am concerned, we can do pretty much whatever we want as long as we follow the eight “I’d Really Rather You Didn’ts” I especially enjoy celebrating Friday.

    Drachir said in part:
    .
“How are you going to deal with heretics? I suggest setting up an Inquisition…”
    .
How can there be heretics when we are free to believe what ever we want to believe? The FSM has already made it clear that He does not care if we don’t believe in him. He just wants us to play nice.

I strongly believe that if people actually followed the eight “I’d Really Rather You Didn’ts” that the world would be a much better place. So, let’s spread the word. The FSM is REAL.

    WELL DONE!!!
as a devout aethiest, i congratulate you on creating everyone who isnt ignorant can love and enjoy!

i would like to back up your fantastic theory (and yes, i do beleive it is only a theory – like creationism or evolution) by quoting Eddie Izzard (who the idiotic, easily offended, religious types who give you hate mail are similarly condemning to hell): “Evoloution is a theory, it has some flaws, but that is no reason to say ‘F***ing magic!’”

and while i’m at it, can i say to the people ho give you hate-mail:

    you are being ignorant.
stop preaching to people, if you dont like it, no one is forcing you to look at this website, go home and live your life.
also, it’s not very christian to swear and make references to penises, so stop being so holier-than-thou.

if you have a problem with my views, then please feel free to email me at

  8. 608 - A True Believer - Feb 28th, 2008

As a recent convert to FSM, I do believe that the true sauce of FSM is a light, basil infused, tomato-based sauce. These break-away groups claiming to be adherents to the Alfredo sauce theory is simply hogwash.
Obviously, in the beginning, there was olive oil …. but shortly thereafter, (about three minutes for al dente) there was great hue and cry as tomatoes took their rightly place alongside and on top of FSM.

At the last passing of the sacred breadsticks on the Sabbath, I mused to my fellow worshipers that it was remarkable that many of the other religions have borrowed the sacrament of consumption of wine from FSM. Further proof of his existence!

For those that deny FSM’s teaching, I can only hope that one day, the checkered table cloth of confusion will be lifted from your eyes. Until that day of enlightenment, I will pray for you.

Red Dutch Pasta Wench or who ever you are behind the mask. I was reading on the web site regarding the t-shirts on religion….it was the comment made by Darren Naath. Actually, he is correct and I believe you don’t get it. The bible teaches us right from wrong. The plot in which you are reading into is leaning you towards temptation {Luke 11:4} and to portray evil. The web site of Landover Baptist Church is pulling those who cannot fight temptation to join their cult. I’ve read other articles posted by Darren Naath and believe he is a strong Christian. When you visit the web site of Landover, I believe it is safe to assume you spend an hour there? Or perhaps several hours there? Next, Landover Baptist Church will be including links on their web site to steer people like yourself to inappropriate web sites. The articles that myself, and other Christians like Darren Naath have posted there are to bring sinners {like yourself} to Christ {1st Peter 4:18}. My view, he has the plot right on!

Kyle, I don’t need a book of bad fiction to teach me right from wrong, I know already. I look after people, i do not steal, lie, kill others etc etc etc. So why exactly does that make me a sinner? Just because I don’t believe in Jesus and co? If so, I’d rather be a kind sinner than a righteous ass.

    Well Red Dutch Pasta Wench,
When you die, I know the gates of Hell will open wide for you. The bible is not a book of bad fiction, but God’s word. See…I told you so…”you don’t get it”. We are all sinners, and thats why God sent his only son, to save us and forgive us of our sins. Those who stand behind the bible “do get it”. I believe that is the message that not only Mr. Naath was trying to get across, but everyone who visits their web site. Those who believe in Jesus Christ, those who attend Church, those who follow the word of God…..are ALL sinners. The only difference between myself (Christians) and you, is that Christians will have eternal life after we die, you however will not. There has only been one Saint that has ever been born and died and rose again…you know who that is. So surrender to him.

Whoah, wait, just a question here, has anyone done like a Da Vinci style movement on this religion, like it would be an ultimate idea because if they haven’t yet right, I mean it isn’t really the full experience of a religious movement without having that kind of thing, so you know like I was thinking about something like that.

Oh personally I believe in God, and I agree that he probably would have a sense of humour about this, I know I sure do and we’re supposed to be made in the image of him so yeah :). No, I don’t belong to any religious affiliation, I just believe in God.

I don’t like religion and churches because they always end up lying and most of the time at least killing somebody. I don’t mind the theory of evolution, I do mind some extreme evolutionists though because they disregard religion in every way possible, realistically people need to look at both evolution and creationism and actually ‘get’ what each other is trying to say. It is hard for an evolutionist to understand why creationists base themselves on beliefs from some old book, its hard for creationists to understand why evolutionists don’t. The sad thing though is creationism was stupid enough to try and pass itself off as science – a very unbalancing idea.

In conclusion Creationists should remain in a belief system but stop disregarding everything from evolution just becuase they don’t like it. Evolution should stay in a science system but stop disregarding everything from creationism just because its not science.

Parmesan. What about that Kraft stuff in the green cans? Can you sprinkle that stuff on the FSM? What about high holy days, such as Columbus Day? Isn’t the Vatican in Rome, and we all know about spagetti and Rome? Is basil a sacrament?

Soba — the Oriental alternative — is buckwheat noodle(s.) The Japanaese language does not have plurals, hence one soba or a bunch of soba — no “s” there. Is soba sorta like the sushi of the FSM church? The Japanese designed Toyotas, so isn’t that intelligent design, and soba comes from Japan.

    Or is that here-say?

I totally agree with you, as for these ‘you’re going to burn in hell’ replies you’ve received how nice and christain of them to be so compassionate. Religion isoften used as just another excuse to discriminate. I’m not sure how anyone can support christianity with the obvious historical flaws with the time lapse between jesus christs’ death and the first gospel, if people feel that believing in a God makes them lead happier lives then I’m all for it but to impose on others and condemn them is ridiculous

    @That one guy -
Well – for a Pastafarian wedding, you would need whatever kind of wedding celebrant that is authorized by your local jurisdiction. In the U.S. at least, as long as your official is licensed to conduct weddings it really does not matter what kind of ceremony you have. There are certainly people who do secular weddings in my area, and you might be able to find one in yours who would be happy to dress and talk like a pirate for you. As for the rest – it’s not like we have any rituals around here, only suggestions, so grab your wench and go for it! Christians like Kyle S claim to “know” the bible is God’s word, Jesus died for sins, only Christians will be saved….and on and on. Well, guess what – you don’t KNOW shit. You just choose to believe what you believe. That doesn’t make it truth. There is no factual basis to call it “knowing” Can you possibly comprehend that! Your beliefs are no better or valid that any other set of unsubstantiated beliefs.
Why would you think its any more valid to believe that the death of Jesus was Yahweh’s human sacrifice of his embodied self to save you for eternity than to believe that matyrdom of infidel innocents will mean 72 virgins await you in heaven. There is absolutely no factual evidence either way. So, why surrender to Yahweh/Jesus? Belief in them is no more justified than belief in Allah, Zeus, Ra or Mother Goose.
So, we Pastafarians choose to believe in FSM. He doesn’t demand blood sacrifices or command the destruction of non-believers. And He is delicious with parmesan!

You are barking up the wrong tree. I agree that creationism is not a science, but neither is the theory of evolution. However, it is reasonable to discuss the theory of intelligent design in a science class simply because that is where creationism is taught. It is a no brainer. If you want to discuss a blind faith for believing in your Spaghetti Monster, then a philosophy class is more appropriate. However, I vote for the history class. Truth is founded not upon science, but upon history. The truths of history are solid, even when science cannot explain them. The scientific method itself is based on building a history by experimentation to prove a theory. (But, according to science, the bumblebee cannot fly.) Explaining our existence, any way you slice it is a miracle simply because any and every explanation by the creationists or the evolutionists requires defiance of science, on a grand scale. However, we are here! History wins by all accounts. You cannot even prove your birthday scientifically. It is a historical fact not a scientific one. The laws of thermodynamics say that the universe tends toward chaos not order, yet some event or someone set our world in order. To quote Einstein “Anyone seriously interested in the pursuit of science becomes aware that a spirit is involved. One vastly superior to man. In the face of which our modest powers must be humbled.” Speaking of history, A Dr. Kent Hovind of Florida has a standing offer of $250,000 to “anyone who can give any empirical evidence (scientific proof) for evolution.” Evolution— true science fiction. His website is http://www.drdino.com. If you think scientific design is a platform for blind-faith, your mistaken, Blind-faith has no foundation to stand on, just like evolution, just like your spaghetti monster. They crumble under the test of history. However, true faith is built on history, not some kind of ‘faith’ or good feeling someone tries to muster up. That is why religious fanatics and so-called Christians get flakey, they ‘believe’ just because they accepted what their denomination or religious order said, without question. Faith is only faith when it has a solid foundation that is historically reliable and proven. Yes, even faith in God has historical foundations.

    Dog,
    .
I think I am beginning to understand why there are relatively few posters on this site who have been doing so for more than just several months. I believe I made my first post in December. Since then I have read dozens of messages from people who seem to not have a clue what science is or what scientific method entails, nor the difference between science and other kinds of inquiry or study. Your post is yet another example of the same confused thinking.
    .
I have read (over and over again) attempts to clarify these issues. I, myself, have tried to explain the difference between knowledge and belief, to no avail. Either you (and others similarly confused) have not read any of these attempts to make things clearer for you or you have not understood what was written. It is becoming soooooo tedious to keep reading intelligent, well written replies to messages such as yours and see so little (or is it no) progress. What is the point of trying to explain it to you when the explanation has already been given? Your writing makes me think that you have actually gone to school, and yet, you seem to have not learned even the simple difference between science and supernatural thinking. How have we failed you so badly?
    .
I will leave it to others who have more fortitude than I to try to set you straight. When they do answer your post, please read the good ones carefully. Try to understand. They really do want to help you, but you must be open to learning first.

FWIW, I thought your response to Dog was the single best and most appropriate response of its sort that I’ve ever seen posted here. Although it’s a little un-original to do this, I’d suggest you re-post it whenever the mood strikes you, it would be a pleasure to me to re-read it occasionally!!!!

So does that mean that every time I eat Spaghetti it’s like paying homage to FSM?

Because my dad makes Spaghetti a lot.

    I ate it today.

[Spaghetti is capitalized because it's now a religious word.]

Is the FSM a jealous deity?

I’m a polytheist considering adding adding the FSM to the list of deities I worship. Of course, this only makes sense if I can do so without angering Him. Can I worship Him and still worship Santa Claus? (I’m a Santaist, among other things.)

Is the FSM really male? I suppose He is always poking things with His Noodley Appendage, so I can understand why it would be expected that the FSM is male… and there is always those meaty balls…

In the light: Sorry for all the attacks. However, please realise we are not an anti-Christian group. It even says so in the faq.

How can one satirical letter become a “religion?” After reading the FAQ, Hate mail, and this entire thread, all I can say is I’m bemused, yet amused, by the cretinous “Spaghettians” (or whatever you claim to call yourselves). I thought the argument was about separation of church and state, not about viciously attacking everyone else for their beliefs. Additionally, I’m sorry you all are getting scammed into purchasing merchandise to support this vacous cause. Enjoy your blissful ignorance!!

Amazing. I am writing a “Cultural Hermeneutics” paper on the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster for my Relgion and Society class. I attend a private Christian university, and I just wanted you all to know that FSM is the best subject for a paper EVER! If you need a copy for legal purposes, super.

Steven, The FSM is not a jealous deity. The first I’d Really Rather You Didn’t states, “I’d Really Rather You Didn’t Act Like A Sanctimonious, Holier-Than-Thou Ass When Describing My Noodly Goodness. If Some People Don’t Believe In Me, That’s OK. Really, I’m Not That Vain.”
    .
George, the second I’d Really Rather You Didn’t tells us (Pastafarians), “I’d Really Rather You Didn’t Use My Existence As A Means To Oppress, Subjugate, Punish, Eviscerate, And/Or, You Know, Be Mean To Others.”

An elaborate spoof on Intelligent Design, The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is neither too elaborate nor too spoofy to succeed in nailing the fallacies of ID. It's even wackier than Jonathan Swift's suggestion that the Irish eat their children as a way to keep them from being a burden, and it may offend just as many people, but Henderson, described elsewhere as a 25-year-old "out-of-work physics major," puts satire to the same serious use that Swift did. Oh, yes, it is very funny. -- Scientific American
