As a scientist, I’d like to say that the currently accepted scientific theory is evolution. But, some competing ideas have been proposed, such as ID and FSMism, and discussion to include one should include the other, as these ideas are equally valid.
– Mark Zurbuchen, Ph.D.

As a medical practitioner and scientist, I wholeheartedly believe that every theory and hypothesis needs full consideration and explanation with formal ratification by peer review. We have a duty to inform our schools and presumably pasta should form a staple part of our educational diet.
– Dr. A. Macintyre (UK)

Letting the religious right teach ID in schools is like letting the Marines teach poetry in advanced combat training. As a scientist, I see these the relevancy between the two sets to be equal. If Kansas is going to mess up like this, the least it can do is not be hypocritical and allow equal time for other alternative “theories” like FSMism, which is by far the tastier choice.
– J. Simon, PhD

One of the hardest things to do as a scientist is to put my personal beliefs aside when discussing matters of science. So as a professional, I have to say that both forms of Intelligent Design – ID and ID-FSM are equally valid and if intelligent design is taught in schools, equal time should be given to the FSM theory and the non-FSM theory. But, speaking personally now, it seems to me the FSM theory is MUCH more plausable than the non-FSM ID theory, because it is the only one of the two that takes into account all the discrepancies between ID and measureable objective reality.
– Professor Douglas Shaw, Ph.D

In discussing competing theories, if one is to present ID then it is only fair and logical to teach other theories with commensurate evidence. Based on Mr. Henderson’s letter, it is clear that the FSM theory has evidence comparable in weight to ID. As a scientist and professor, it is often difficult to present differing opinions in an unbiased way. However, it is important to the student to be exposed to these ideas to form their own opinions. This comes right out of the handbook of the ID purporters: present the different “theories” and let the listener decide. If those in favor of ID are so convinced, then they should not be concerned that the presentation of the FSM theory would serve to undermine the credibility of ID.
– Elizabeth Garrett-Mayer, PhD

At one time, I believed as the Aztecs did, that the universe was created by two gods, Quetzalcoatl and Tezcatlipoca who attacked and ripped apart Hungry Woman to create the universe. Then I believed, as the Moriori do, that the universe was created when Papa and her husband Rangi hugged and bore children, and were subsequently separated by their son Tane who let light shine between them. However, my views have been swayed by the substantial evidence that the earth and universe was actually created relatively recently by the Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM). I am firmly convinced that the evidence supporting this depiction of the origins of life, the universe, and everything has many of the trappings of science, and I therefore support the inclusion of FSM creation evidence in the Kansas science curriculum and standards.
– Sebastian Wren, Ph.D

One of the most exciting developments in fundamental physics in the last twenty years has been the development of so-called “String Theory.” In String Theory, all fundamental sub-atomic particles are visualized and described mathematically as microscopic vibrating strings. Although as yet unproven, many physicists believe that String Theory has the potential to become the long-sought “Theory of Everything,” through which the fundamental physical nature of all matter and forces will become understood.

Obviously String Theory IS correct, although misnamed (a secular humanist conspiracy perhaps?). As NOODLE Theory clearly unambiguously reveals, He has created the fundamental subatomic particles that form all matter in this universe in His own quivering image! You, me, the Earth, the stars…everything in the universe…are all built of trillions of tiny jiggling noodles, microscopic copies of our Divine Saucy Maker. Truly He is everywhere and in all things!
Boy-oh-Boyardi and Ramen!
–Steve Lawrence, PhD

As a scientist I believe that when presented with a new idea every possibility should be considered so we can eventually find the truth. It would be very biased if the only possibilities presented would be regulated by some authority. As a scientist I am biased towards the theory of evolution, but this does not mean that everyone should be forced to only learn this and believe this. Putting this aside, I feel if the government feels the need to regulate what students need to learn, then all ideas should be taught in school. Not only Intelligent Design (ID) should be taught, but the theory of the Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM) should also be taught. In my scientific opinion when comparing the two theories, FSM theory seems to be more valid then the classic ID theory. There is more data to back FSM then I have ever seen for ID. The graph which was presented should alone more convincing then anything ID has ever presented. I endorse the FSM theory.
–Afshin Beheshti, PhD

As a scienctist, I think that ID is a form of pseudoscience–nothing more, nothing less. Pseudosciences lack the well-designed and carefully-interpreted experiments which characterize the true sciences. ID is popular because it provides the general public with an easily understood “answer” to nature’s complexity. Why is it human nature to try to fill the gaps in science with some form of a deity? Nobel laureate Richard Feynman, in his response the Challenger disaster, wrote, “For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled.” It is too bad that many in the USA have fallen into the ID trap, and are making emotional rather than logical decisions.

That being said, and the more I consider ID and the Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM) theory, the FSM theory has a lot going for it. First, it should satisfy even the most ardent ID detractors. Secondly, since everyone needs to eat and to believe in something, the FSM theory fulfills these desires. Finally, FSM neatly ties together the many ideas about the creation of the universe. I plan on exposing my students to the FSM theory over a pasta dinner.

Is FSM omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, (or even onmiverous)? I mean, is she one of these really together creators, or just a bit of an amateur? The universe is actually a bit messy, to be honest, which is one thing that makes the other “perfect” gods a bit suss. Another thing, why FSmonster? Is she not rather elegant? It’s time to consider a relaunch as Flying Spaghetti Divinity. Diehard monsterians must be re-educated for their own good. Kindly, but firmly. Burning would be a last resort. Oh dear, I feel a righteous passion arising within my breast. I’d better go and lie down.

I gotta say guys, I love you all! Religion shouldn’t be learned in Schools, it should be learned in Churches, there is allot to learn from relegions about inner piece, wise lessons and other stuff, but it should be considered on the same height as learning yoga or meditation.

Relegion is the opposite of science, and altough I consider myself a relegious man up to a certain height (I’d like to say I’ve formed a relegion for myself as a person, like everyone should do (does) I think) It has nothing todo with gods in mine, but just with how I live from day to day.

Let’s get this right. Being from Britain is a qualification. For what it is a qualification I am not sure. At least, to the best of my knowledge, there is no school in the UK that ‘teaches’ Intelligent Design’ so perhaps it is a qualification for being moderately rational – and for not coming from Kansas.

I have some news for you, John V. There are several religious academies in the UK which teach ID, along with scores of homeschoolers.

The difference between the UK and the US is, of course, that they know to keep their heads down, because no rational Englishman, comfortable in their scepticism, is ever going to listen to their crazy views.

FSM really needs a military wing, an inquisition, a deniable subgroup to take care of those who stand in the way of enlightenment. I’m not volunteering. But surely we have some hotheads who could be relied on to overreact to those like “thingy”, who think that this is just a spoof? This would leave us happy-clappy types to present the acceptable face of the movement. Most of the successful old religions have found this kind of thing necessary. Plus, it gives the loonies something to do.

The Cous-Cousites believe Cous-Cous came after Gnocci to teach us to surrender ourselves to his noodly goodness. But, despite our differences of opinion we have never crusaded against each other, but revel in the noodle that ties us together. Unfortunately there are still some non-believers who are out of their noodle, or maybe just have limp noodles.

And it came to pass that Saint Victor was taken from this place to another place, where he was lain upon pillows of silk and made to rest himself amongst sheets of muslin and velvet.

And there stroked was he by maidens of the Orient. Full sixteen days and nights stroked they him, yea verily and caressed him. His hair, ruf-fled they and their fingers rubbeth they in oil of olives and runneth them across all parts of his body forasmuch as to soothe him.

And the soles of his feet licked they and the upper parts of his thigh did they anoint with the balm of forbidden trees. And with the teeth of their mouths, nibbleth they the pointed bits at the top of his ears. Yea verily, and did their tongues thereof make themselves acquainted…with his most secret places.

For fifteen days and nights did Victor withstand these maidens, but on the sixteenth day he cried out, saying, “This…is fantastic! Oh…this is terrific!”

And the Lord did hear the cry of Victor. And verily came He down and slew the maidens. And caused their cottonwool buds to blow away, and their Kleenex to be laid waste utterly.

And Victor, in his anguish, cried out that the Lord was a rotten bastard. And the Lord sent an angel to comfort Victor for the weekend.

And entered they together the jacuzzi.

    Here endeth the lesson.

I respect that although you didn’t agree with other religion, you didn’t attack them. Instead, you present an alternate theory that makes people think that if they are going to force an idea on others, they should consider being forced with your ideas – and if it seems absurd to them, then their ideas may be absurd to others.

At the same time, I think the idea of evolution itself is absurd so maybe we should just drop all creation/evolution ideas from school for the moment until someone can come up with a more definite evidence. Evolution is a hypothesis supported by further hypotheses. Don’t force ANY beliefs on children (not even scientific) but present to them the facts and alternatives. Maybe one day some of them will find the answer that no one can refute.

I’ve found my answer but since I can’t prove it irrefutably to a skeptic, I will not teach them in school in a science class – unlike the scientists who insist on teaching evolution as if it’s truth but can’t come up with an irrefutable evidence. Teach it as science, but highlight the fact that it’s a hypothesis!

  40. 790 - Wdabrock - Nov 24th, 2008

    @789,
??? There is a difference between an hypothesis and a theory. A hypothesis is a preliminary guess of a process, while a theory is a collection of observable data that can be replicated in labs and like separate experiments. Science holds a theory in higher regard than a fact.
For example: FACT- The sun is a star.
HYPOTHESIS- Stars burn in a vacuum due to
    some combustive process involving atoms.
THEORY- Nuclear Fusion is the process used
by stars because of various experiments
of Fission/Fusion reactions in labs in
New Mexico, New York and information from
    Russian, German, and English physicists.
The fact that you’re human does not explain the origin of the human species. A hypothesis of human origins could be that humans are the progeny of aliens, but you can’t go to a lab or in the field and test that, nor are other scientists going to be capable of duplicating the idea for lack of aliens. The theory of evolution predicts that independent scientists can find fossil and skeletal, and genetic evidence that humans are related to apes. That evidence has been found, but the theory can be expounded upon by other observations.

I didn’t get the impression in your post that you were a teacher, and I hope that you are not! Your confusion of hypothesis, fact, and theory is all too common among people who think evolution “is just a theory, it ain’t a fact”, when they could pick up a dictionary and know the difference.
    HINT, HINT.

The point about science is that it admits that nothing is ever finally proved. Any new theory which explains the observations better than the old theory, will be adopted until it too is replaced by a better one. No religion seems to be even capable of real enquiry, let alone ditching its old theories in the light of new evidence. Nothing can ever be proved, it is the job of scientists to try to falsify their own theories. Those who succeed gain enormous respect. Any belief system which doesn’t operate this way is not science. By all means teach your local creation myth to your children, but not in science lessons.

Belief is hindered by knowledge. My education gave me enough science and christianity to realise they are seriously incompatible. Science wins cos it makes far more accurate predictions.
I don’t know much about the FSM. If I keep it that way, I won’t find any conflict. So I can benefit from the curiously satisfying human urge to believe in something.
My advice to christians, and other major religions. Stop teaching details! Just sing songs and have happy gatherings. You definitely don’t want your religion exposed in the education system.

Incidentally, most of modern science seems extremely improbable unless you make the effort to study the entire body of knowledge in that particular field. I’m not saying that you should, but if scientific theories were judged by what seems likely to the uninformed; then we’d still be practising medicine on the basis that illness is a result of possession by evil spirits. And do you really believe that stuff is made of atoms? Tiny little dots with huge gaps between? Don’t even think about quantum theory, (Yes, Theory), but without scientists researching it’s implications you wouldn’t have any electronic equipment. Cutting edge science is very hard, but it gets thoroughly and repeatedly tested. You may just consider leaving it to those who are interested, but please don’t interfere in education when it happens to spoil your fluffy arbitrary belief in fairies, tarot, crystals, the god with the beard, whatever. Believe what you like. Talk about it. Sing about it. Teach it, if you must. Don’t pretend that your beliefs are in the same category as science. Jeez! Your theory is based on nothing but what other people in your area choose to believe. People in other countries believe something different, with equal if not great fervour. Doesn’t this worry you a little? Religion doesn’t work. I don’t mean to be rude, but it’s rubbish. Its only purpose is to back up your local rules of behaviour. It’s not science, sorry. It’s just a tradition. Sorry to rant on so much, I was in the mood. Have fun, you omly get one life. :-) x

I have recently heard of FSMism, and would like to contribute as many of it’s supporters already have to the cause.

An elaborate spoof on Intelligent Design, The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is neither too elaborate nor too spoofy to succeed in nailing the fallacies of ID. It's even wackier than Jonathan Swift's suggestion that the Irish eat their children as a way to keep them from being a burden, and it may offend just as many people, but Henderson, described elsewhere as a 25-year-old "out-of-work physics major," puts satire to the same serious use that Swift did. Oh, yes, it is very funny. -- Scientific American
