I am a practicing Roman Catholic. And I am also 13 years old. I was on Yahoo Answers and found a question about “The Flying Spaghetti Monster” So, I clicked on it. I probably shouldn’t have but when the link finished loading, I almost cried. Its hard enough for me to have faith in God already, I’m the type of person who needs to have things proven to them, but I just found your site… Disgusting for lack of a better word. I also heard that you made this site because you wanted to get back at the Kansas School Committee or something. I am hoping and praying that this is a true fact, and that you really don’t believe in this. I know this is wrong of me to say. People should believe in whatever they want, but really, looking at some of the articles that you have written, It seems that your site is more of an “In your face” thing to the Christians saying “Haha, we can make a religion just as easy as you guys can, see how stupid it is now?” For example ‘Your just jealous that our god has bigger balls then yours’? Excuse me for my language, but thats just crap, again, for lack of kinder terminology.
Even so, if you made this as a joke, or something to pass the time, that doesnt mean everyone else sees it that way. I mean, come on, you have a majority of collage students believing in this, and hopefully they’ll see how stupid (excuse me for saying that, im just trying to tell you my opinion without criticizing you further then everyone else already has) this all was, and that they may want to rethink their ways, that maybe you’ve gone a little too far?
I relize this all probably sounds silly from a 13 year old, but please take this into consideration…. If this whole thing is not a joke, im sorry, but if it was bobby… Thats kind of sad.-erin

Well, look at that. A posting that fits in with “concerned criticism” instead of “hate mail”. Well done.
Anyway, your sixth sentence shows that you have promise: you need stuff proven to you. You should pursue that instead of believing anything people tell you.
And you’re right, we DON’T believe this complete bullshit, because quite simply that’s what it IS: satire. Look it up on dictionary.com if you don’t know what it means.
And worry not, college students DON’T believe this, they see how stupid it is and make the link that quite honestly there isn’t any difference between our ridiculous “beliefs” and other religions’.
Oh yeah, and it wasn’t made to “get back” at the Kansas School Board, it was to prove (rightly so) how stupid Intelligent Design was when they were trying to get it on the curriculum. They put it on despite how people realized how stupid it was, none of them got re-elected if I’m not mistaken and they reversed it afterwards.

You find it hard enough to believe in god already, being a rational person. There’s the clue. Christianity is hard to believe because it’s not true, and rather silly. Just as silly, in fact, as the FSM, but people don’t feel that because they are so used to it and because impressive-looking authority-figures appear to accept it.
Yes, we are deliberately taking the Mickey, but not because we are irresponsible idiots. After much serious consideration we have reached the conclusion that it’s time the whole myth was debunked, because it does a lot of harm.
So carry on thinking, Erin. Reason on the facts, and don’t take untestable dogmas on trust just because they come from men in black robes.

You know Erin, at 13, you’re already farther ahead of most of your fellow Christians. I want to thank you for your politeness. You just keep on asking those questions about your faith, challenge your beliefs and maybe one day, this whole FSM thing won’t seem so stupid and crap. It may even make some sense. You should go and read the About page to properly understand our position – it started with protecting education.
Enjoy your pasta, think fond thoughts. Avoid the meatballs if they creep you out.

Erin,
Thank you for your literate letter of criticism.
-
The pertinent word is “THINK.” I don’t “BELIEVE” in the FSM, but I “THINK” he/she is very, very unlikely because there is no (none, zero) empirical evidence to support his/her existence. For the same reason, I don’t “THINK” that witches, ghosts, Santa Claus, or leprechauns exist.
-
I apply this same test to religions, and to me, anyway, there is a complete lack of evidence to support the existence of any supernatural being.
-
If you are comfortable with your “FAITH” based beliefs, and they give meaning to you life, that’s fine. Just please don’t consider secular people inferior; and please don’t try to convert us. We are on a different wavelength.
Best wishes,
ATSAP

13 years old my ass. Unless…
Are 13 year olds suddenly able to write even better than adults do? She actually used all the “there”s right. And she used “you’ve”, complete with the apostrophe.
… until the last part, where she suddenly writes poorly again:
“I relize this all probably sounds silly from a 13 year old, but please take this into consideration….”
Would a 13 year old ever say “this all probably sounds silly from a 13 year old”? Ever?

Fake. No matter how precocious they might be, no 13 year old kid writes a message like that unless an adult is dictating it to them.
Whoever you are, it’s pretty sad that you’re trying to deflect criticism by pretending to be a little kid.

There are in fact 13 year old kids who would be able to write this. I’m 22, but intelligent as I am (not believing in a bearded man on a cloud, but mocking him by pretending to believe in an Italian dish made in an American way) I would have been able to write this one sentence as perfectly as I do now when I was Erin’s age. (Everything misspelled in the above sentence is because I’m Dutch. Ha!)
I think Erin’s a lot more grown-up (although Catholic) than most of the people visiting this website. I also think I have the largest penis in the world, and Michael Jackson is still alive. Believe. I mean, I believe Erin’s a lot more grown-up etcetera.
@Erin: keep on believing whatever you want, and searching for proof for whatever you believe. If you find any, cling to it like a madman, it’ll be the only security you’ll ever find.

I think its a tough call on fake or not. I have some well educated 13 year olds who can write this well, but at the same time Erin you seem a bit nieve to not get the joke.
In case you are a teenager (or older but only thinking like a teenager), I would say this to you. Regarding your quote:
//People should believe in whatever they want, but really, looking at some of the articles that you have written, It seems that your site is more of an “In your face” thing to the Christians saying “Haha, we can make a religion just as easy as you guys can//
Your thought that people should believe in whatever they want – that’s great ! Keep it up, including yourself and don’t let others tell you what to believe. However, recognize that the satire on this site is not aimed at Christians only, but members of all faiths that depend upon a supernatural god that can’t be proven.
If its a belief system you want, without the concept of god, I suggest you check out Pantheism, Humanism, and other schools of philosophy.

Sorry Erin, but if you are a practicing Catholic then thinking that: “People should believe in whatever they want….” is against your faith. You should probably go confess. Matthew 28:19-20 commands you to go and make disciples of all nations. If you are going to be Christian, you will need to come to peace with the intolerance required by the religion. Your faith believes itself the one true faith and your god the one true god.
You also need to let go of your questioning nature. All the answers are in the Bible and where the Bible is contradicted by modern understanding, you need to let go of the modern understanding. Predictive value and reproducible results are nothing next to the King James version of the Bible.

This sounds very much like a 13 year old, guys. I teach 9th grade English, and this is typical. And, 13 year-old children often state that what they are about to say may sound stupid, especially when intellect is encouraged (this site.) In other words, this kid rose to the level of the site.
I say good for him and he gets it. Hopefully, he’ll read the Open Letter, and see for himself. This is America and we all can believe as we chose.
Do you not see that this is an atheist in the making? He is already questioning what is out there.

Regardless of “Belief” I just have not been able to completely understand why one “religion” has to superior to another. From my basic understanding they all stem basically from the same origin, especially Christianity (nothing new there eg. Jewish History) Anyways, what I’m getting to it, be it offensive to some, regarding religion or anything else, no one likes to have things forced upon them, well at least I don’t appreciate it at all. FSM is not forcing you to “believe”, but asking you to reconsider what is “known”. Now I’m off topic and forget what I was going to say … all in all, good for you for questioning what you read.

You chose to, and if you don’t like it that is YOUR problem. Many of us on the other hand have been forced religious concepts that we don’t agree with. I for one am forced to live in a state where gay marriage is illegal because the bible thumpers disapprove of it. Think about the difference in our religions, then come back when you’ve realized what we stand for.

All i have to say is all these people do is preach and act holy……… if you don’t believe in science and historical fact then how can u claim to have faith in anything…..think about it before u hate on a very creative spin on religion……all the offended people need to start thinking bigger picture…..my family was raised catholic, yet one thing i learned by actually viewing the world with open eyes is that our religion is just a take on many older than ours…all were created to inspire faith in a greater something…anything hell a pizza god even…. Do not go around acting like some holy roller bashing this brilliant website without thinking before you type….without your precious science and history you wouldnt have the computer to type on and the tv to watch to tell you how … heres a true history lesson for you…..
“Constantine called the Council of Nicea—the first general council of the Christian church, 325 A.D.—primarily because he feared that disputes within the church would cause disorder within the empire. The dispute in mind was Arianism, which was the belief that Jesus was a created being. The famous phrase they were disputing was, “There was when He was not.” This was in reference to Jesus and was declared heretical by the council and thus resulted in the following words about Christ in the Nicene Creed: “God from true God…from the Father…not made.” It was determined by the council that Christ was homoousia, meaning, one substance with the Father.
The council that formed an undisputed decision on the canon took place at Carthage in 397, sixty years after Constantine’s death. However, long before Constantine, 21 books were acknowledged by all Christians (the 4 Gospels, Acts, 13 Paul, 1 Peter, 1 John, Revelation). There were 10 disputed books (Hebrews, James, 2 Peter, 2-3 John, Jude, Ps-Barnabas, Hermas, Didache, Gospel of Hebrews) and several that most all considered heretical—Gospels of Peter, Thomas, Matthaias, Acts of Andrew, John, etc.”
Take from that what you will and go learn something about our true history and past. If anything understand that your religion has nothing to do with anything more than your comfort gained from faith. God didn’t intend on a debate…. and besides our god is rather young…and history shows the bible and other religious texts have many similarities… could it be man actually passed down the same basic beliefs and we just all with our free will and greed twisted it into how it is now……. no way…… not possible jesus our lord and savior….er i mean osirus would never let that happen….

Had you been a roman catholic child in Ireland over the past 40 years then there would’ve been a very good chance your priest would’ve bought tears to your eyes in ways you really don’t want to know about.
The roman catholic faith is an absolute disgrace and filled with deviants of the worst order.

Erin,
I completely understand why you have a difficult time finding faith in god. I also used to be extremely religious but only because of my parents (honestly, if our parents don’t teach us religion, would any of us make it up on our own?). But as I grew older, I found more and more that that every aspect of religion reeks of man’s imagination, not god’s divine intention. Every religious book contains stories and laws that are often petty, outdated, ugly, and thoroughly human. I take my evangelical friends for example who write off the shortcomings of their religion with doubt and denial. They will tell me with a straight face that a god who loves all his creations equally, a god of absolute justice, would damn Gandhi to the most unfathomably gruesome torment for all eternity if Gandhi did not accept god upon his death. Hitler, on the other hand, would be spared the torment and granted eternal bliss should he choose to accept god upon his death. Yet the bible also contains hundreds of books which command us to obey superstitions by which a house with mildew is “leprous,” two people of different families may not intermarry (meaning that it’s a crime to NOT commit incest), and a person with a boil on his head must fast for seven days before being examined by a priest. Religion is very convenient, disjoint, and clearly created by human beings, not a divine power.
This website and church were created for the purpose of comparison. Does it seem reasonable for your teacher to tell you that the world was created by a flying spaghetti monster? No? Does it then seem reasonable for your teacher to tell you that the world was created by a Jewish zombie made of flesh, crackers, and alcohol? It’s all the same Erin. I hope you realize that a little sooner than most do.
With concern,
Bagelsauce

First of all you the reason you have problems believing in god is because you are thinking more rationally. Second of all there is no reason to cry over this. I’m very happy at the fact that you need to have things proven to you before you believe them. We are not targeting Christians nor any other religions specifically and if you feel that we are understand . The FSM is a satirical parody of a Judeo-Christian god to make a point not to be a joke. Bobby had nothing against the Kansas School Board at all, this was not an act of revenge. Our point is that if Intelligent Design should be passed off as Science than Science should allow for more than one view of a theory. The point Bobby was trying to make was that ID does not have a place in a Science class. Finally despite you being 13 years old you will merit a lot more attention and respect from us because you are one of the few that does not try to threaten us with eternal or just come straight out and insult us without even trying to consider the point Bobby was making.

Erin, you state “People should believe in whatever they want”, but you should know that the brain does not work that way. We don’t believe in something simply because we want to. Information is introduced via the senses, the brain analyzes the information and comes to conclusions. The conclusions can lead to a conclusion that something is correct, or it is incorrect, or that more information is required to formulate an opinion. We don’t choose our beliefs. The fact that you find it hard to believe in your religion demonstrates that you are in the information gathering stage. Good for you. At your age, I finally came to the conclusion that what I formerly called my belief in god, was in fact a fallacy. Remember what Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) once said; “Faith is believing what you know ain’t so”.

I think that Erin’s concerns are very real and valid ones, and it’s a nice change to read something from someone who open-minded enough to not just throw insults and fuel the the outright hatred of religion that feeds on sites like this. Coming onto this site without any prior knowledge of pastafarianism, it can sometimes be a hard thing to tell that this isn’t just a mean joke. I wasn’t even sure how to find the essential information when I first came here, and I already knew what I was looking for. I honestly think the site could use a slight redesign.
The answer, Erin, is no. This is not meant to be an insensitive joke, even if it becomes one at times. It’s difficult to point out the fallacies in someone else’s logic when they’ve purposely developed a blind spot for them, and Bobby chose this way–Repeating it back to them in a distorted form they aren’t as blind to–of communicating it. It is not an anti-religion, it’s only anti-passing-off-religion-as-science. It’s picked up a lot of people who extend the ideas behind it to discredit religion in general, though. Reading some responses to the hate mail on the site, I find that there are Athiest zealots just as bad as the most backwards religious zealots. I am very sorry that your letter was posted here subject to people who would read it just to slander it. I feel that it was pretty well-written and genuine, and doesn’t quite deserve to be put alongside all the hate mail.
I call myself pastafarian because I don’t think it’s possible to know whether god exists, and if he does it’s impossible to tell whether he is or is not a Flying Spaghetti Monster or an Invisible Pink Unicorn. I genuinely believe that Pastafarianism has just as good a chance of being cosmically correct as any other religion invented by mankind, and as long as I’m dealing with even chances I might as well pick the one with pirates.

Ham Nox #46. Lovely riposte – but whilst it is certainly not “possible to know whether god exists”, it is also impossible to believe that a god does exist without some proof. I am proud to be an “atheist zealot” and am amazed that people believe in an all powerful super-being without any evidence whatsoever. It is so sad that many people see a god in day to day life when it is simply their ignorance of maths and physics: their answered prayers being no more than chance; their wonder at the might of the power of god a lack of understanding of the laws of our universe. Religion is so obviously a control mechanism for the masses – How else would our leaders have us die for our country? Most (if not all) of the threats, swearing and abuse within these threads emanates from our religious friends – not the atheists!

“Ridicule is the only weapon which can be used against unintelligible propositions. Ideas must be distinct before reason can act upon them; and no man ever had a distinct idea of the trinity. It is the mere Abracadabra of the mountebanks calling themselves the priests of Jesus.” — Thomas Jefferson
You see, Erin, Bobby only pointed out to the Kansas school board that by attempting to inject their religious beliefs into a science class they were opening the door to any number – and type – of other dogma. Do we spin science off into what the Aztecs or Lakota or aboriginies or Hindus believe created and rule the universe? Why not?
Remember how Jesus supposedly said “Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s”?
Well, how about rendering unto science that which is science? Leave the ancient superstitions to religious class.
If you truly are a person “who needs to have things proven to them”, you WILL be a Pastafarian one day. Ask for proof from your pastor/priest/rabbi/mullah and see what you get. But don’t ask a nun. She’ll kick the crap out of you.

I could spell and use correct grammar when I was 13 as well, so let’s give Erin the benefit of the doubt.
Congratulations, Erin, for your healthy questioning attitude. I’m sorry to say that as time goes on and you encounter even more diverse and opposing viewpoints it will only become harder for you to have faith in Catholicism, but please rest assured that as you say people are entitled to believe in what they want, yourself included. Even though you have been raised in a religion that extols the virtue of guilt you don’t have to feel guilty for your crises of faith – if you’re having trouble believing in something that is often a good sign that it’s not worth believing in. I myself was raised in a non-religious family but even so still felt guilty and somewhat afraid when I first realised aged 6 that the idea of God didn’t really make sense, so I can only imagine what you must be going through now. I can only hope that once you go through your atheist phase yourself as you almost inevitably will you remember the FSM and join our congregation – after all, our Heaven has beer, strippers, and pirates, and makes as much sense as an all-loving God brutally torturing and killing His only son to make up for His free-will-endowed creations breaking the rules He himself created.
Also, rest assured that Bobby did not do this to mock Christianity – the 8 I’d-Really-Rather-You-Didn’ts clearly discourage us from mocking others’ beliefs for the sake of it. This is about 1: the difference between science and faith and 2: having fun, which is actually a worthy end in and of itself.

Hey, I just want to make the point that it is very likely that this girl is 13. Some kids are really smart really young. I was the same way at her age, and if anything, she’s smarter by acknowledging that people might think it’s silly coming from someone her age. I actually used to use the same phrase, because people (I think) are more likely to listen to you if you do indeed acknowledge the fact that you might sound ridiculous, and that you can see why they’d think so. She’s just seeing from multiple perspective. Erin, keep questioning yourself and everything around you, it’s good for you. =)

Excuse me but It is tough enough living in a world filled with religious fanatics not to be able to express myself without some young person who(not trying to condescend, but I know I really am) thinks they know it all telling me how wrong I am, with caveats saying that they are just trying to be nice…I dont care what you have to say Erin…you obviously have it all figured out…if you are going to be a condescending shmuck…go full out and do it…dont use caveats to let people know how nice you are…because it doesnt matter how nice you are … you are still gonna die when you drink the fucking kool aid.

@ #47, extending #46:
“Atheistic zealots” really ARE just as bad as the religious type. You know why? The “atheistic zealots” come on WAY TOO STRONG. When they come on strong against someone who believes something else, or even has doubts about their belief in something else, what does that someone do? They don’t listen to you, they GET DEFENSIVE. They will block out what you’re saying, retreating to a “happy place” of sorts, and may be inclined against other atheists in the future, meaning the “zealot” just caused damage that will likely take a long time to be repaired, if ever. So please, everyone: when there’s a hopeful like this, DON’T BE A HARDLINER!

Hello:
Im assuming that you havent read “The God Delusion”? you should read it, its like the bible for the athiests. I recommend it, its somthing you should enjoy. I read the bible and the stories in principle is creative, but thats all they are stories. Im sorry if i have offended you in any sort of way (which i probably have) but I hope you can try to understand me….you dont have to ofcourse considering you are sitting ata different desk, but still. I guess its cool to believe in somthing and i do belive in somthing, not God but chance. you’ll probably think its ridiculous but then again it is probably as ridiculous as your belief. Im not hating anyone for there beliefs or implimenting it in any sort of way.

“Its hard enough for me to have faith in God already, I’m the type of person who needs to have things proven to them…”
Faith and reason are not incompatible with eachother. Adhere to faith in a bigger force acting outside of yourself if you want to; but for the love of God, in the process of it don’t be arrogant and don’t under any circumstances believe that whatever you believe in is true.

Erin, don’t be afraid to keep asking questions. It is wrong to believe 100% in something that doesn’t make any sense to you. If you don’t get the answers you seek at church, you might want to try asking them somewhere else.
The original purpose of the FSM was to keep religion out of the public schools because the churches were hoping to cloud the thinking of the young. Schools should be teaching about how to find answers and learning about what’s really going on in the world, not making up stories to counteract the truth.
Good luck to you!

I just don’t see why you need to worship a god that most people only belive in because its been hammered in there head every Sunday of there life, or becouse they been scared into beliving by stories of hell, to spread that message.

Erin,
Firstly, don’t be afraid to capitalise the first letter of your name. It will give you an obviously much needed boost to your self-esteem. Then, you can confidently begin to research your beliefs properly. If you are indeed ‘the type of person who needs to have things proven to them’ then you are already half way there to following the FSM with confidence. After all, his Noodly Holiness only wants for us to see the truth in scientific ways, where ‘things are proven.’
Yours,

Let me help you with some vocabulary here as you mention several times that you lacked the proper wording:
“Disgusting for lack of a better word”
You could also have tried: vile, horrible, foul, rankerous, abhorrent, repugnant, odious, wretched, despicable, detestable, etc. There are plenty of words that are similar to “disgusting” if you wish to find a better one. I suggest bookmarking a good online thesaurus, they are extremely helpful when trying to come up with the proper wording, or when you forgot a word but can remember what it means (and we all hate it when that happens).
“Excuse me for my language, but thats just crap, again, for lack of kinder terminology.”
Instead of “thats just crap” you could try, “I question the accuracy of this” or “I don’t think there is any evidence that supports your theories.” Similarly you could try, “that is not an acceptable standpoint.” All of these are kinder alternatives to your choice of “crap”. If you really must make the fecal connection you could always go with, “that’s just anaerobically decomposing organic waste”.
“…hopefully they’ll see how stupid (excuse me for saying that, im just trying to tell you my opinion without criticizing you further then everyone else already has)…”
A less obviously judging way of phrasing that would have been “hopefully they will see the inaccuracy of their current beliefs” or “it is my hope that those who do believe in the FSM will come to realize the false nature of their idealogy”. You could even go with, “Due to the percieved inaccuracy of your belief system, it is my hope that you will abandon your theology for one that is more acceptable.” All of these are much more polite, albiet with the same general level of judgement behind them. But, in this case it would be hard to change the vocabulary to being less judgemental without changing the meaning behind your sentence.
The English language has a plethora of words and combinations that can provide you with kinder terminology should you take the time to search for it. I wish you luck in your search for a kinder, gentler vocabulary. Otherwise you could also stop appologizing for telling it like you see it; I mean we sure don’t appologize for writing about our beliefs here. Either way, you’re writing will be stronger when you do less to undermine your own points.
In love and noodles,

Dear Brothers and Sisters,
I am from Nepal and a very recent convert. Looking at how scientific, logical, and practical FSM is, I could not but be impressed by it. But that is not why I converted. When I saw the Image of His Noodliness, I believe he communicated to me by some extrasensory means, and I had this unjustifiable urge to read the Holy Gospel, and thus I became Enlightened.
However, I have a slight problem. In my country people will refuse to be enlightened if the ‘Church’ part of our holy place is included here. Therefore, fellow believers, I propose a ‘Temple of Flying Spagetti’ so that even the unblessed ones from my country may be enlightened. Could anyone please tell the Holy Fathers about that please.
Again, I am very thankful to His Noodliness for enlightening me and treating my cousin from Terminal stage of CAncer, and giving eyesight to my Grandmother…
Sincerely,
Nepali Believer

hey catholic girl. don’t believe any of the FSM crap. it’s rotten. you are very smart and your response was very well written. way to stick up for yourself. I know it’s tough trying to figure stuff out. I’m a Christian, not a Catholic. To me, God is all about relationship, not about saying Hail Mary’s and doing good to get into heaven. Grab a Holy Bible, you know, a REAL one, and read it for yourself. It’s filled with God’s promises and love for you. He has a purpose and a plan for your life and He will tell you what it is. You just have to ask Him, trust Him and Obey Him. love ya girl! Maybe one day I’ll see you in heaven.

This is my greatest problem with Christians. The hell with DOING GOOD? Just wear your piety on your sleeve and bend everyone else’s ear about your “personal relation with gawd”. Now, now ja. You want her to be a Christian. Don’t tell her to pick up a Bible. That’s the opposite of what you’re trying to do. Reading that piece of filth you call “The Good Book” is like having your anus ripped out with searing tongs which have been covered with salt and hot sauce. How you can believe that, I don’t know. It defies all logic and understanding. Whereas the FSM has proof and evidence!

Ja (#73) is yet another example of a Christian who is scared of another Christian asking questions. We wouldn’t want people doing something like that… Asking questions is a great way for people to figure out that Christianity (you can insert any religion there) is a bunch of BS. Couldn’t have that.
Erin, keep asking questions. Keep wondering. Never close your mind because there are endless possibilities. And don’t accept offerings of love from people like Ja. Their love is predicated on whether or not you believe like they do. If you change your mind, Ja will stop loving you and start condemning you to hell. Pastafarians will accept you no matter what.

Look, whoever you are, I’m a 13-year-old who believes religiously in the FSM and have for a very long time. I suspect that you have simply not matured enough to realize that no one here at FSM is trying to convert you, personally, from your apparently very deep beliefs in Jesus and Guitar Hero, we are just here to offer a serious alternative to Roman Catholicism, Evangelism, Mormonism, and any other constricting -ism you may believe in. My mother was saved by the FSM from deep despair as a RECOVERING Catholic. we’ll keep our peace and sauciness, and you keep yours.

I love the irony in this whole thing… Poor 13 year old kid doesn’t realize that this entire “religion” is a satirical spoof on Religion. No one truly believes it.
From what I can gather there are several purposes of the CoFSM:
1. Give a good example to show that every aspect of religion is taken on faith, with NO evidence of the existence of god or any of his martyrs/Disciples/ect. It shows that a new religion can be made simply by mimicing others, because the stories and circumstances of a particular religion are considered to be unquestioned and absolute, no matter how ridiculous it seems. And that is exactly why it should not be taught in schools. It is effectively the exact opposite of teaching kids how to think for themselves.
2. Show that there are still dumb people in the world who really do not have the intelligence to sense sarcasm, irony, or any other forms of satirical humor. Especially religious people, who seem to, for the most part, have their brains switched “off”. I have to say its pretty interesting what you god fearing people have to say about another “faith” with “radically” different beliefs. lol.
3. Mock overbearing faith/religionious organizations that has been used for thousands of years by political leaders and “martyrs” to start wars, spread ignorance, death, corruption, and fear.
There is nothing wrong with faith. Faith has its place in society just like a lot of other things do. Everyone needs something to believe in. However, faith and religion are too entirely different things. There are personal beliefs, and then there are beliefs in which are pressured on other people in order to expand a religion through an age old method of scare tactics and propaganda. Thats were teaching religion in schools comes an issue. Kids should be taught only what we know for a fact, or all known faiths and systems of universal understanding so that they can make their own intelligent decisions when they get out in the real world.
The whole thing was designed to mock blatant, blind ignorance in something that cannot be proven, yet is so ruthlessly defended.

Oh come on, cut the crap. So she’s 13, so what? I’m 12, and I’ve been going on this website since I was 10. I have the Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster at home and everything. Honestly, reading this DID make me feel a little bad. But does it ever occur to these types of people that anyone reading about a religion different from theirs may take offense and feel alienated? Did this 13-year-old ever come across the idea that we have the right to be expressing our feelings about religion? And even if it is a joke, if it offends people it just goes to show how uptight those people are about religion, and how intolerant they are of the beliefs (real or fake) of others.
On a softer note, I appreciate how hard Erin tried to tell us her feelings without being a blubbering idiot or spewing out insultes, unlike the much older (but clearly not more mature) intolerant hate-mail posters.

It’s normal to have doubts about any religion, it only means that you have an inquisitive mind. I can only suggest you to go further in your study, whatever conclusion you reach. I may suggest you also that you decide what is a “proof” for you, and if it applies to belief systems

I think people keep missing the REAL point of FSM. The point is this–if you are going to teach creationism than who’s version of creationism do you teach? There are many more than just the Christian version. I think that religion belongs at home, not in school and not in government. The whole point Bobby was trying to make is that people believe in many things and it is arrogant to assume that we should automatically be taught Christian creationism. I also cannot see why people have their feelings hurt or are offended by this site or any other that does not agree with their religious beliefs. I am sure that lots of Christians make fun of Krishna, Buddha and the Great Turtle in the sky that carries the world. I really doubt they care. Sticks and stones, people! And it’s our business if we are going to Hell… let us go there if you think we are. All my friends will be there anyway… I am truly amused by people who don’t get it and attack our “beliefs.” It’s ALL just magical thinking, Baby, any way you slice it.

Dan,
First, you are correct. You don’t have the credentials. This in itself is a part of the massive problem with religion. Any joe blow off the street can write about it or preach it, and someone will believe them. No offense to what you have written, but there should be more merit to things than “This is what I believe”. I suggest you get “The God Delusion” by Richard Dawkins who has a laundry list of accolades and a degree or two. No contradictions. Some opinions, but he will at least tell you it is his opinion. It is a mind opening experience.
Second, we do not believe in your heaven or hell. So using the soul argument doesn’t work. As a fellow Pastafarian so eloquently said about the hell argument, your god seriously overestimates his ability to intimidate me.
I look forward to my eternal beer volcano. RAmen.

The bible opposes homosexuality, yet god (male) created first a naked MAN. It opposes incest, yet adam and eve’s sons had kids with eve (their MOTHER) being the ONLY WOMAN amongst them, and eve was essentialy a female CLONE of adam.
It opposes canableism, but from what I hear, every other sunday, church goers eat Jesus’ BODY and drink his BLOOD… The foundations of a Demonist CULT.
God said Mary WILL have HIS child weather she wanted to or not, making him a rapist but she was fine with it and Joseph did not care that his wife had an old mans baby. The correct term for a virgin pregnancy I forget, but it is theoretically possible, if this actually happened and Mary told Joseph “God did it”, as this is the only case ever recorded, which means nothing.
It also says self mutilation is OK. “If your right eye is causting you to sin, pull it out, if your left hand is causing you to sin, cut it off and cast it into fire” or some bullshit like that.
BTW erin, i believe the correct term is: “go fuck youself” or “Fuck|You|Sideways” you catholic bigoted ass hole and hope your god loves you enough to let you live on a bloody cloud for eternity. Also, mabey you should look in the mirror and say 3 BLOODY MARY’s, not HAIL MARY’s, as the ledgend says she will kill you and then you can live with your homo-incest-cannablistic-rapist-self mutilating CULT buddies.
BTW again, it is a joke but rest assured, my analisis isn’t.

Sandgroper Mat, you need to calm down a bit!
Erin’s exploring the limits of her theological understanding which, whatever the result, is a worthwhile pursuit. I think “go fuck yourself” is a little over the top especially as the original comment was written with a clear attempt to prevent offence being taken.
By the way, your analysis (analisis? Unpleasant sex act with an Egyptian Goddess?) is totally wrong. God didn’t have sex with Adam so he’s not a homosexual. Even if the doctrine of transubstantiation is accepted as literal (instead of symbolic as those who take communion amongst my friends agree), the transformation occurs beyond the level of our senses (whatever that means) so there’s no drinking of blood or eating human flesh being promoted. God didn’t rape Mary as (again) he didn’t have sex with her. Rape means forced sex not unwilling impregnation. God is not physically an old man in any biblical scene I’m aware of and his wife’s infidelity in Joseph’s problem to deal with in his own way. Cutting off your hand is not a literal piece of advice. It’s a metaphor. I would have thought someone with an appreciation of the FSM parody would have a better grasp of the non-literal. Also, what’s the stuff about Bloody Mary for? Do you believe that?
Anyway, chill a bit, and Erin, if you read this, I hope you continue to ask questions and form your own view of the world that makes you happy. Whether that includes God, FSM (BTW no-one really believes in FSM, it is a joke) or just the beauty of the natural world, if it comes from a genuine desire for your own truth you’ll be happy with it.

I’m glad that you wrote a response that is grammatically correct and well punctuated, and that you admit you question your faith.
Aside from sarcastic comments on being a true Pastafarian and never denying his Holy Noodliness, truth be told—Pastafarianism literally is is the sarcastic outlook that we (atheists, agnostics, skeptics) have on the seemingly ridiculous beliefs that religions have from our point of view.
Don’t be afraid to question your faith in God, look at things from a rational point of view, without the bias of “knowing” there is a God, don’t just adhere to your religion because you fear Hell; sure Pastafarianism is somewhat offensive to believers, it is definitely a mockery, but if you look at it from our point of view, it’s just a way of showing to people who begin doubt their faith that religion really is just a compilation of superstitious beliefs and myths that many people subscribe to whether for gifts after life, or fear of eternal damnation.
To sum it up, look at belief in the Flying Spaghetti Monster as a light-hearted parody of yet another deity that nobody can prove. Look into the sarcastic side of it, you’ll see that belief in the FSM is just as viable as belief in God, Allah, whoever. They all offer the same amount of evidence, all with superstitious, scientifically impossible stories.

Just remember – without doubt whatever you think you have it’s not faith. Faith requires doubt and challenge. What a lot of the objectors to FSM have is not faith but DOGMA and that’s a very scary can of worms… if it was a can of spaghetti we’d all be much better off.
Two other quick points.
Why do so many christians seem to spend so much time trawling these forums… hmm what little niggling doubt is twisting away inside there? And if the response is ” I’ve no doubt you (insert any range of expletives we’re used to seeing here) then it’s dogma and I refer the reader to the above point.
Secondly, ‘I’m a christian not a catholic’ was it Ja’s comment? As someone raised as a catholic who studied scripture, theology and philosophy I think I can safely recognise that these people really don’t have a clue about what they profess to defend.
By the way – shortly after becoming aware of the FSM I won an international pasta recipe devising competition.

Speaking of faith – should one have the faith that this letter was written by a 13 year old? One’s faith may be better placed in the belief that it was his/her parent that wrote the letter. Sad that a 13 year old could so easily be pushed away from a faith – double sad that the parent feels that they need to hide behind the mask of a child… so easily pushed away from a faith.

If you have difficulty believing in a several millennium old fairy tail with no evidence than don’t believe it! The fact that people were and still are trying to get the schools to teach ID even though it’s just a subjective religious belief garbed in the false term of a “theory” with no logical reasoning or empirical evidence is the whole reason why the church of the FSM was made. If you think it’s illogical to believe in an impossibly complex creature causing everything without leaving a shred of evidence, than good news, you can think rationally!

Lack of sense for irony and humour at all is a typical sympton of religious bigottry.
Wellwellwell, the very funny thing is that the non-existance of the allmighty flying spagetti-monster cannot be proven on just the same lavel than any other god, even yours. Think about it. With what right does anyone could say his god is more probable than any other, like Thor or Shiva? “holy” books which conatin the “absolute truth” they ALL claim to have.
Me as an atheist will have much less problems in a potentially judgement after death than one who has believed in the wrong god, cause everybody knows that gods do not appreaciate that at all.
To avoid eternal torture you should think about praising every of the 5963 gods ever known on earth…..

Erin,
I am also fairly new to this site but unlike you who just chance upon this, I was really searching for sites like this which are discussion about religion, humanity and politics. I understand (because I was also 13 once and not because I want to shallowly comfort you – not my style) that being at that age you already have so much to think about and more often it feels overwhelming. Without sugar coating it Erin, what is going on here is life’s reality. I consider this site to be information exchange and I find there are lots of intelligent and decent people posting here. What you might consider ‘in-your-face’ articles here are plain truths which for the most part not only centered against Christianity but religion in general.
Would you rather be told lies? Do you still believe in Santa Claus or the tooth fairy? You are actually in a much better situation than most children in poorer countries. In countries predominantly buddhist, the second child in every family automatically becomes a monk at the age of 7. The age of reason (since you are being raised a catholic I am pretty sure you are familiar with the age of reason concept) but hardly the age when a kid can make an informed decision about life’s purpose. They only get religious education and basically do not get to experience normal childhood. In contrast, you have here the freedom and resources at your disposal to examine and experience things. Ask questions. Remember it is your right to get real answers. If you ask questions and get answers like ’sshhh’ or ‘because I said so’ or if somebody tells you to ‘trust in the Lord and lean not on your own understanding,’ insist on getting intelligent answers. Trust yourself first.
It might not be apparently to your right now but Bobby Henderson is actually fighting for you and the children of generations to come. I do not know him personally but anybody advancing the freedom of choice and going against people and institution trying to push their own beliefs to everyone to the detriment of society in general is a very admirable person to me. I think of him as a courageous person going against the dictators of the world such as Kim Jong Il but doing it in a humorous manner and without the cape.
We still have lots of things to learn and that is the beauty of it all. Learn with us. I am very sure if you ask questions through this site, people here will give you straightforward and honest answers.

Sadder is the fact that your church killed people just for not believing in their god. And I recommend you to read carefully your bible, because I’d like to know how an “All loving god” (as your church proclaims) tells that homosexuals should be killed just for being homosexuals. Read Levitics (I’m spaniard, I don’t know if I wrote that well) 20:13, if you don’t believe me. Or tell me about the flood and Noah’s story, killing almost every being in the world is love?

Hey, just because our religion may sound ridiculous to Christians doesn’t mean it’s a joke. And just because the religion itself is not a joke, doesn’t mean we cant joke about it. (’For example ‘Your just jealous that our god has bigger balls then yours’? Excuse me for my language, but thats just crap, again, for lack of kinder terminology.’)

Well, Erin.
You are obviously not stating your opinion, rather than insisting that you are right.
I’m sorry, but I believe putting faith in something that has no evidence nor proof and living it as your lifestyle to where you wrongfully criticize others for not believing in your garbage is stupid. The point of this is that, down to the core, anyone can make a religion and anyone can/will follow it. They are no more wrong than you are.

no, Spanky is not my real name.. it was just whimsical enough.
I feel sorry for you, mr. 13 year old practicing Roman Catholic. You have been brainwashed by your priests and pastors, and you have given up your own freedom for it. Think about it- you give up every sunday of your life to listen to some guy yell at you about how if you procreate (have sex) before marriage you will go to hell. Sex, the most natural function between a man and woman, that people about your age start to get urges for, and he tells you not to! I am atheist, spend my sundays skiing and doing fun stuff with Earth, and I will most certainly not give a shit when I procreate before marriage. I am free. You are not. Your god has such a hold on you, it makes me want to cry.
I feel sorry for you that you have such an emotional reaction to a simple joke. Do you believe in Zeus or Thor or Yggdrasill (the Norse tree of life)? no. You are an atheist just the same as me. I just go one god further.

I just have to say this lack of cuss words in this letter makes me question its belonging in the Hate Mail section…. Seems to me to be more like a disagreement note or something. Im a nonpracticing liberal christian (my own religion) and at 15 I have added a FSM clause to the unwritten bible of Liberal Christianity. I think the only proof for this religion is that you cant proove it to be false. In that sense, All religions are true in some senses.

Hey Spanky – I totally agree with your posting. I wonder though if you also agree with me that sex is a natural thing between living things and not just between man and woman.
I do not want to raise some ire, I just want to know your take on it.
Thanks.

Lets look at it this way; it doesn’t matter what religion you believe in but what you do. Saying pastafarians are stupid/crazy is like saying satanists are evil. Don’t judge, don’t hate, and if you are going to judge, make sure you know what you’re judging at. Point here; NEVER ASSUME. And number 115 is right,”The point of this is that, down to the core, anyone can make a religion and anyone can/will follow it. They are no more wrong than you are.”

Erin-
I am a bit older than you, but you remind me very much of myself. You seem to write similarly to me, but what really struck me was the similarity between us religiously. I was also raised a Roman Catholic, but like you, I am the type of person who wants things proven. I often asked questions of both my priests and my parents, all of which were met with some form of “because that’s just the way it is.” At about 14 or 15, I had what is apparently known as a “religious crisis.” I must say, it was a scary experience. All of the beliefs I had were thrown into doubt, and I was worried about making people angry with me. My grandmother, for instance, almost refused to allow my dad to marry my mom due to her being Episcopalian. When he did anyway, she didn’t speak to my mom for some time afterwards.(Just a sidenote, I was not, in fact, born yet.)
So I wasn’t exactly in a good situation. Eventually, though, I figured out that my parents weren’t going to get all that angry with me, so I started going into some limited philosophizing on theology, philosophy, psychology, and just general morality. During this time, I discovered and became fascinated by the Unitarian Universalist movement.
A year or two later, it was finally over. I had survived my religious crisis. Mind you, though, my Christian beliefs didn’t. What I ended up with in reality was a happy blend of two things:
Firstly, I do still retain a certain belief in a god. However, I realize that it is not something I can prove, and I am just as likely to be wrong as anybody else.
Secondly, and most importantly, I created my own system of morals. Since I had created it myself, bombarding it with every possible loophole I could think of, constantly trying to poke holes in it, and just generally trying and failing to find some way in which I could be wrong, I can uphold it in all circumstances because it is what I truly believe, not just something that has been told to me.
In short, I am a happier, kinder, and all-around better person because I questioned my beliefs. What I challenge you to do is to think about what you are told, and decide if it, in the words of Buddha, “agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all.” If it is, and you do believe it, then it has passed “the test.” If it has not, there is nothing stopping you from changing your beliefs.
Just as a final note, don’t take anything as fact simply because it is said by someone in a black suit, but at the same time try not to take the people who use caps-lock or mass-obscenities constantly too seriously.
Best of luck to you.

Dear Erin,
Yes, this site was created to get back at the Kansas School Board. I agree that the posts “our ‘God’ has bigger balls than yours” and such are inappropriate and not funny for a 13 year-old who is finding her faith and identity. The purpose of the initial spaghetti monster letter was to protest requiring biology teachers having to teach creationism or intelligent design in their classes.
It would be like me demanding to teach evolution during your mass. It doesn’t belong there does it? They should be, and are, by law, separate.
To understand that the theory of evolution is fact, and not lies, you do not have to give up your faith. There are many biologists who know that evolution is the unifying force of their discipline who have spiritual lives. You do not need to be an atheist to “believe” in evolution.
I hope you talk about evolution openly with your priest and parents.
Sincerely,
A High School Biology Teacher

I’m sure Erin will keep that in mind. I have some personal advice for you, “FAITH.” There’s this amazing thing called grammar; I’d look it up. Also, be careful. Following your heart is all well and good, but if you try to take a left-hand turn every time, you’ll end up going in circles. Lastly, take your computer back to the store, and ask for your money back, because it appears that you, like many others on the web, have been scammed and sold a keyboard with the caps lock permanently on.

FAITH:
You yelling doesn’t make your god any more real. Erin has the right to question things. This is why she IS brainwashed (and what scares me about Christians). You take the word of someone and don’t even attempt to get verification from outside sources or look for your own truths. Then when someone actually does question things, you get scared that you are about to lose another one and begin screaming that they are just fine! Keep your faith that has absolutely no basis in any fact that actually holds up as a real fact! It is a useful scare tactic being able to equate questioning with being tested by the devil. At least we allow her to question and would give her the opportunity to grow up into who she truly is instead of a being a drone.
And Sam, I appreciate the fact that you say that we should be allowed to be atheist. However, I must say that you are extremely conceited to think that Christianity is the correct and right religion to convert to. There have been so many gods in the history of this world, and you think you have the 1 in 6.3 billion chance that your world view is the only completely correct one? You need to take a step back and realize what a speck you are in the grand scheme of things. Perhaps begin to say a quick prayer to all 5,000+ gods every day. Just to be on the safe side…

Someone, buy a thesaurus!
“but thats just crap, again, for lack of kinder terminology.” How about the word “unacceptable” (no more complex than some that this “13″ year old used)? How about “wrong”, “rude”, or “insulting”? When will we as a pastaloving people stop accepting this abuse. I know I should just offer my abusers another helping of meatballs, but I won’t do it forever. I’m running out of meatballs for Flying Spaghetti Monster sake!
This is just more of the same abuse that has become commonplace in our “free” society. From “You Lie!” to “Beyonce had the best video of all time”, (BTW, Beyonce is so hot.)
Where was I?…
When will Pastafrian bashing end? Do we need to have a march on Washington? Do we need a “I have a dream of a plate of pasta” speech? Do we not need to throw off the pirate hat that has shielded us for so long and cry, “I am not an animal! I am a Pastafarian!”?
I am a Pastafarian. Please, take my last meatball.

This is a statement, yes. However, your offense is unjust- not one drop of blood has been shed in this statement, not one lewd or crude phrase used at an inapropriate time. We do not force this belief upon others- you read our texts out of your freewill, and have the right to leave this site whenever you want. Yes, there are parallels with Christianity- but that’s the point of this excercise.

I think this is most certainly not a fake… I am also 13 years old, and, as surprising as this may be to you, some of us actually do posses shreds of intelligence. I know? It’s shocking eh. I think that your comments that 13 year olds cannot express themselves through the use of a superflous vocabulary is quite disturbing. It’s not my fault you were all dumbasses when you were 13.
I really doubt that this is a fake. I think this person is quite concerned young person, as she doesn’t know how to react to this. She has possibly been brought up on roman catholic principles, unfortunate soul, and when she sees something that countermines all she has been taught, she is confused and thinks “oh noez, what am I supposed to do?” which is perfectly understandable.. All she needs to understand is that FSM is a joke, it is being used to highlight the bullshit, to use a harsh yet realistic term, that religion is. The fact that in this day and age when we have reached technological proficiency, and have various scientific theories based on extensive amounts of evidence, all pointing to the fact that the earth wasn’t created by some über astral being, and yet the church of Christianity, among other major religion, for some reason can still exist, is a most disturbing fact. I think a lot of people in today’s society need to take a good dose of reality elixir.
Yeah… I tend to rant a bit.

I don’t understand why it is that Christians and Catholics (though not all of them) have to attempt to debunk every other religion in existence when they themselves have no absolute proof other than an ancient book that has NO factual evidence. I am personally an atheist but I believe religion can serve some good for morality. How ever, being that religion is often the cause of all wars at the root, i feel he benefits of religion are outweighed by the harm they cause. Basically what im trying to say is if you choose o believe in something and you are in fact devout to it, then by all means do it! But don’t bash on another belief no matter how ridiculous it seems because, believe it or not, your religion is just as ridiculous as any other.

i read your message and you’re right: grown-ups are silly. once i was your age and i started to think about jesus how he was send to earth by his father to get killed by us, sinners. do you know that catholics think that little babies are sinners to, even when they are one day old? i’am glad i am not a son of that god. image your father sending your brother to evil people to get killed on a cross.
i also learned, because i was a roman catholic, that mary didn’t have sex, before jesus was born. in holland we tell our little children that babies are delivered by a stork, or grow in cabbages (bloemkool). it silly but it’s difficult how babies are made, you understand….
well, i can tell lots and lots of things, but grow-ups who think they found the true, one and only god, don’t like people who believe something else. perhaps you don’t understand it now, but the’re people who believe in allah, or jahweh, or fsm, or believe that buddha said some wise things, or they follow their own conscience. but some religious people don’t like that and kill for their beliefs, so girls of your age get killed, or their parents get killed…i hate that, because i love people and life. it’s not perfect, but…
i hope you understand why some people are very concerned and even angry…

You are so poorly informed you must derive all your information from sound-bites and religious propagandists. @ 146 – none u. business –
Please give us the reference, chapter and verse, where your savior recommends those violent actions toward people that you visit but may not agree with your mythology.
Your rage demonstrates clearly that you are out of rational debating strategies. Why don’t you stay in school and learn science, math, and philosophy? It will make the world seem a much safer place than what you’ve heard from the pulpit. Start by studying this observation by astronomer Carl Sagan:
“How is it that hardly any major religion has looked at science and concluded, ‘This is better than we thought! The Universe is much bigger than our prophets said, grander, more subtle, more elegant. God must be even greater than we dreamed’? Instead they say, ‘No, no, no! My god is a little god, and I want him to stay that way.’” – Carl Sagan

To all the people who are claiming that no 13-year-old could possibly write as accurately and with as deep thought as Erin does, I would like to say that there are many 13-year-olds (and younger) who can write as well as she/he does. Hopefully, including me. You should not be doubting the validity of her/his said age but applaud the fact that he/she writes this well.
Erin: I am so glad that someone my age is this intelligent, and has a wide enough perspective that they can bring themselves to doubt their own religion, and yet enough loyalty and faith to speak up against (however mistakenly) against another. Personally, I love Pastafariansm, and think all religions have a lot to learn from its satirical observations.

#152-So what your saying is Jesus is a Cannibal, because thats what i got out of your little “joke”. #154 AKA the “13″ yr old named Ringo, you make some points. 13 years old isnt that young, by 7-8th grade i would imagine you would know how to use the computer and a spellchecker. but the best part of this whole thing is the fact that Erin says that she/he is a “practicing” roman catholic, but at the same time isnt sure about the religion. so to my point, why are you saying my religion is wrong, when yours is just as far fetched. to say that beliving in a FSM is stupid is just as stupid as beliving in an all powerful God or his zombie son Jesus.
P.s. i think that the “collage students” have better things to worry about than what religion they choose to believe in, like partying like the pirates they are!

so, just wait a minute, you’re actually trying to believe in something that there is no proof of? Being a person of reason, according to what you said, why would you try to believe in anything without overwhelmingly irrefutable evidence? I guess I just can’t see how someone who tries to say that they that they like to take a logical viewpoint on the world, and then decides to believe in something with no proof. Moreover, why shouldn’t the christian religion be scrutinized? They waste billions of dollars that could be going to the medicinal field on beliefs in a god who they made up just to feel like there is a purpose and that they will live eternally in heaven, when clearly the opposite is true, and we should be making progress in the fields that would increase the wellbeing of the populace, while dismissing the nonsensical things that make up society.
