I am a practicing Roman Catholic. And I am also 13 years old. I was on Yahoo Answers and found a question about “The Flying Spaghetti Monster” So, I clicked on it. I probably shouldn’t have but when the link finished loading, I almost cried. Its hard enough for me to have faith in God already, I’m the type of person who needs to have things proven to them, but I just found your site… Disgusting for lack of a better word. I also heard that you made this site because you wanted to get back at the Kansas School Committee or something. I am hoping and praying that this is a true fact, and that you really don’t believe in this. I know this is wrong of me to say. People should believe in whatever they want, but really, looking at some of the articles that you have written, It seems that your site is more of an “In your face” thing to the Christians saying “Haha, we can make a religion just as easy as you guys can, see how stupid it is now?” For example ‘Your just jealous that our god has bigger balls then yours’? Excuse me for my language, but thats just crap, again, for lack of kinder terminology.
Even so, if you made this as a joke, or something to pass the time, that doesnt mean everyone else sees it that way. I mean, come on, you have a majority of collage students believing in this, and hopefully they’ll see how stupid (excuse me for saying that, im just trying to tell you my opinion without criticizing you further then everyone else already has) this all was, and that they may want to rethink their ways, that maybe you’ve gone a little too far?
I relize this all probably sounds silly from a 13 year old, but please take this into consideration…. If this whole thing is not a joke, im sorry, but if it was bobby… Thats kind of sad.-erin

Just remember – without doubt whatever you think you have it’s not faith. Faith requires doubt and challenge. What a lot of the objectors to FSM have is not faith but DOGMA and that’s a very scary can of worms… if it was a can of spaghetti we’d all be much better off.
Two other quick points.
Why do so many christians seem to spend so much time trawling these forums… hmm what little niggling doubt is twisting away inside there? And if the response is ” I’ve no doubt you (insert any range of expletives we’re used to seeing here) then it’s dogma and I refer the reader to the above point.
Secondly, ‘I’m a christian not a catholic’ was it Ja’s comment? As someone raised as a catholic who studied scripture, theology and philosophy I think I can safely recognise that these people really don’t have a clue about what they profess to defend.
By the way – shortly after becoming aware of the FSM I won an international pasta recipe devising competition.
touched by the noodly appendage.

Speaking of faith – should one have the faith that this letter was written by a 13 year old? One’s faith may be better placed in the belief that it was his/her parent that wrote the letter. Sad that a 13 year old could so easily be pushed away from a faith – double sad that the parent feels that they need to hide behind the mask of a child… so easily pushed away from a faith.

If you have difficulty believing in a several millennium old fairy tail with no evidence than don’t believe it! The fact that people were and still are trying to get the schools to teach ID even though it’s just a subjective religious belief garbed in the false term of a “theory” with no logical reasoning or empirical evidence is the whole reason why the church of the FSM was made. If you think it’s illogical to believe in an impossibly complex creature causing everything without leaving a shred of evidence, than good news, you can think rationally!

Lack of sense for irony and humour at all is a typical sympton of religious bigottry.
Wellwellwell, the very funny thing is that the non-existance of the allmighty flying spagetti-monster cannot be proven on just the same lavel than any other god, even yours. Think about it. With what right does anyone could say his god is more probable than any other, like Thor or Shiva? “holy” books which conatin the “absolute truth” they ALL claim to have.
Me as an atheist will have much less problems in a potentially judgement after death than one who has believed in the wrong god, cause everybody knows that gods do not appreaciate that at all.
To avoid eternal torture you should think about praising every of the 5963 gods ever known on earth…..
….just in case. :-)

Unlike your christian savor, the noodley appendage himself has left evidence of His existence for us to find. Noodles, Marinara, Meat balls ect.
Your christian savor has only left a collection of scriptures, that were written 200 years after he gave his life ( or died of natural causes at, or around the age of 35 because during that time period, you were lucky to live to 40 years old. I’ll go with the latter and say he died of natural causes or syphilis, because he was a man whore. ) So if I were you, I’d seriously consider going out and buying a plate of spaghetti and reallllyyy looking at it with an open mind.

Erin,
I am also fairly new to this site but unlike you who just chance upon this, I was really searching for sites like this which are discussion about religion, humanity and politics. I understand (because I was also 13 once and not because I want to shallowly comfort you – not my style) that being at that age you already have so much to think about and more often it feels overwhelming. Without sugar coating it Erin, what is going on here is life’s reality. I consider this site to be information exchange and I find there are lots of intelligent and decent people posting here. What you might consider ‘in-your-face’ articles here are plain truths which for the most part not only centered against Christianity but religion in general.
Would you rather be told lies? Do you still believe in Santa Claus or the tooth fairy? You are actually in a much better situation than most children in poorer countries. In countries predominantly buddhist, the second child in every family automatically becomes a monk at the age of 7. The age of reason (since you are being raised a catholic I am pretty sure you are familiar with the age of reason concept) but hardly the age when a kid can make an informed decision about life’s purpose. They only get religious education and basically do not get to experience normal childhood. In contrast, you have here the freedom and resources at your disposal to examine and experience things. Ask questions. Remember it is your right to get real answers. If you ask questions and get answers like ’sshhh’ or ‘because I said so’ or if somebody tells you to ‘trust in the Lord and lean not on your own understanding,’ insist on getting intelligent answers. Trust yourself first.
It might not be apparently to your right now but Bobby Henderson is actually fighting for you and the children of generations to come. I do not know him personally but anybody advancing the freedom of choice and going against people and institution trying to push their own beliefs to everyone to the detriment of society in general is a very admirable person to me. I think of him as a courageous person going against the dictators of the world such as Kim Jong Il but doing it in a humorous manner and without the cape.
We still have lots of things to learn and that is the beauty of it all. Learn with us. I am very sure if you ask questions through this site, people here will give you straightforward and honest answers.

Sadder is the fact that your church killed people just for not believing in their god. And I recommend you to read carefully your bible, because I’d like to know how an “All loving god” (as your church proclaims) tells that homosexuals should be killed just for being homosexuals. Read Levitics (I’m spaniard, I don’t know if I wrote that well) 20:13, if you don’t believe me. Or tell me about the flood and Noah’s story, killing almost every being in the world is love?

Hey, just because our religion may sound ridiculous to Christians doesn’t mean it’s a joke. And just because the religion itself is not a joke, doesn’t mean we cant joke about it. Well, Erin.
You are obviously not stating your opinion, rather than insisting that you are right.
I’m sorry, but I believe putting faith in something that has no evidence nor proof and living it as your lifestyle to where you wrongfully criticize others for not believing in your garbage is stupid. The point of this is that, down to the core, anyone can make a religion and anyone can/will follow it. They are no more wrong than you are.

no, Spanky is not my real name.. it was just whimsical enough.
I feel sorry for you, mr. 13 year old practicing Roman Catholic. You have been brainwashed by your priests and pastors, and you have given up your own freedom for it. Think about it- you give up every sunday of your life to listen to some guy yell at you about how if you procreate (have sex) before marriage you will go to hell. Sex, the most natural function between a man and woman, that people about your age start to get urges for, and he tells you not to! I am atheist, spend my sundays skiing and doing fun stuff with Earth, and I will most certainly not give a shit when I procreate before marriage. I am free. You are not. Your god has such a hold on you, it makes me want to cry.
I feel sorry for you that you have such an emotional reaction to a simple joke. Do you believe in Zeus or Thor or Yggdrasill (the Norse tree of life)? no. You are an atheist just the same as me. I just go one god further.

I just have to say this lack of cuss words in this letter makes me question its belonging in the Hate Mail section…. Seems to me to be more like a disagreement note or something. Im a nonpracticing liberal christian (my own religion) and at 15 I have added a FSM clause to the unwritten bible of Liberal Christianity. I think the only proof for this religion is that you cant proove it to be false. In that sense, All religions are true in some senses.

Lets look at it this way; it doesn’t matter what religion you believe in but what you do. Saying pastafarians are stupid/crazy is like saying satanists are evil. Don’t judge, don’t hate, and if you are going to judge, make sure you know what you’re judging at. Point here; NEVER ASSUME. And number 115 is right,”The point of this is that, down to the core, anyone can make a religion and anyone can/will follow it. They are no more wrong than you are.”

Erin-
I am a bit older than you, but you remind me very much of myself. You seem to write similarly to me, but what really struck me was the similarity between us religiously. I was also raised a Roman Catholic, but like you, I am the type of person who wants things proven. I often asked questions of both my priests and my parents, all of which were met with some form of “because that’s just the way it is.” At about 14 or 15, I had what is apparently known as a “religious crisis.” I must say, it was a scary experience. All of the beliefs I had were thrown into doubt, and I was worried about making people angry with me. My grandmother, for instance, almost refused to allow my dad to marry my mom due to her being Episcopalian. When he did anyway, she didn’t speak to my mom for some time afterwards.(Just a sidenote, I was not, in fact, born yet.)
So I wasn’t exactly in a good situation. Eventually, though, I figured out that my parents weren’t going to get all that angry with me, so I started going into some limited philosophizing on theology, philosophy, psychology, and just general morality. During this time, I discovered and became fascinated by the Unitarian Universalist movement.
A year or two later, it was finally over. I had survived my religious crisis. Mind you, though, my Christian beliefs didn’t. What I ended up with in reality was a happy blend of two things:
Firstly, I do still retain a certain belief in a god. However, I realize that it is not something I can prove, and I am just as likely to be wrong as anybody else.
Secondly, and most importantly, I created my own system of morals. Since I had created it myself, bombarding it with every possible loophole I could think of, constantly trying to poke holes in it, and just generally trying and failing to find some way in which I could be wrong, I can uphold it in all circumstances because it is what I truly believe, not just something that has been told to me.
In short, I am a happier, kinder, and all-around better person because I questioned my beliefs. What I challenge you to do is to think about what you are told, and decide if it, in the words of Buddha, “agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all.” If it is, and you do believe it, then it has passed “the test.” If it has not, there is nothing stopping you from changing your beliefs.
Just as a final note, don’t take anything as fact simply because it is said by someone in a black suit, but at the same time try not to take the people who use caps-lock or mass-obscenities constantly too seriously.
Best of luck to you.

Dear Erin,
Yes, this site was created to get back at the Kansas School Board. I agree that the posts “our ‘God’ has bigger balls than yours” and such are inappropriate and not funny for a 13 year-old who is finding her faith and identity. The purpose of the initial spaghetti monster letter was to protest requiring biology teachers having to teach creationism or intelligent design in their classes.
It would be like me demanding to teach evolution during your mass. It doesn’t belong there does it? They should be, and are, by law, separate.
To understand that the theory of evolution is fact, and not lies, you do not have to give up your faith. There are many biologists who know that evolution is the unifying force of their discipline who have spiritual lives. You do not need to be an atheist to “believe” in evolution.
I hope you talk about evolution openly with your priest and parents.
Sincerely,
A High School Biology Teacher

I’m sure Erin will keep that in mind. I have some personal advice for you, “FAITH.” There’s this amazing thing called grammar; I’d look it up. Also, be careful. Following your heart is all well and good, but if you try to take a left-hand turn every time, you’ll end up going in circles. Lastly, take your computer back to the store, and ask for your money back, because it appears that you, like many others on the web, have been scammed and sold a keyboard with the caps lock permanently on.

FAITH:
You yelling doesn’t make your god any more real. Erin has the right to question things. This is why she IS brainwashed (and what scares me about Christians). You take the word of someone and don’t even attempt to get verification from outside sources or look for your own truths. Then when someone actually does question things, you get scared that you are about to lose another one and begin screaming that they are just fine! Keep your faith that has absolutely no basis in any fact that actually holds up as a real fact! It is a useful scare tactic being able to equate questioning with being tested by the devil. At least we allow her to question and would give her the opportunity to grow up into who she truly is instead of a being a drone.
And Sam, I appreciate the fact that you say that we should be allowed to be atheist. However, I must say that you are extremely conceited to think that Christianity is the correct and right religion to convert to. There have been so many gods in the history of this world, and you think you have the 1 in 6.3 billion chance that your world view is the only completely correct one? You need to take a step back and realize what a speck you are in the grand scheme of things. Perhaps begin to say a quick prayer to all 5,000+ gods every day. Just to be on the safe side…

Someone, buy a thesaurus!
“but thats just crap, again, for lack of kinder terminology.” How about the word “unacceptable” (no more complex than some that this “13″ year old used)? How about “wrong”, “rude”, or “insulting”? When will we as a pastaloving people stop accepting this abuse. I know I should just offer my abusers another helping of meatballs, but I won’t do it forever. I’m running out of meatballs for Flying Spaghetti Monster sake!
This is just more of the same abuse that has become commonplace in our “free” society. From “You Lie!” to “Beyonce had the best video of all time”, (BTW, Beyonce is so hot.)
Where was I?…
When will Pastafrian bashing end? Do we need to have a march on Washington? Do we need a “I have a dream of a plate of pasta” speech? Do we not need to throw off the pirate hat that has shielded us for so long and cry, “I am not an animal! I am a Pastafarian!”?
I am a Pastafarian. Please, take my last meatball.

This is a statement, yes. However, your offense is unjust- not one drop of blood has been shed in this statement, not one lewd or crude phrase used at an inapropriate time. We do not force this belief upon others- you read our texts out of your freewill, and have the right to leave this site whenever you want. Yes, there are parallels with Christianity- but that’s the point of this excercise.

I think that your comments that 13 year olds cannot express themselves through the use of a superflous vocabulary is quite disturbing. It’s not my fault you were all dumbasses when you were 13.
I really doubt that this is a fake. I think this person is quite concerned young person, as she doesn’t know how to react to this. She has possibly been brought up on roman catholic principles, unfortunate soul, and when she sees something that countermines all she has been taught, she is confused and thinks “oh noez, what am I supposed to do?” which is perfectly understandable.. All she needs to understand is that FSM is a joke, it is being used to highlight the bullshit, to use a harsh yet realistic term, that religion is. The fact that in this day and age when we have reached technological proficiency, and have various scientific theories based on extensive amounts of evidence, all pointing to the fact that the earth wasn’t created by some über astral being, and yet the church of Christianity, among other major religion, for some reason can still exist, is a most disturbing fact. I think a lot of people in today’s society need to take a good dose of reality elixir.
Yeah… I tend to rant a bit.

I don’t understand why it is that Christians and Catholics (though not all of them) have to attempt to debunk every other religion in existence when they themselves have no absolute proof other than an ancient book that has NO factual evidence. I am personally an atheist but I believe religion can serve some good for morality. How ever, being that religion is often the cause of all wars at the root, i feel he benefits of religion are outweighed by the harm they cause. Basically what im trying to say is if you choose o believe in something and you are in fact devout to it, then by all means do it! But don’t bash on another belief no matter how ridiculous it seems because, believe it or not, your religion is just as ridiculous as any other.

i read your message and you’re right: grown-ups are silly. once i was your age and i started to think about jesus how he was send to earth by his father to get killed by us, sinners. do you know that catholics think that little babies are sinners to, even when they are one day old? i’am glad i am not a son of that god. image your father sending your brother to evil people to get killed on a cross.
i also learned, because i was a roman catholic, that mary didn’t have sex, before jesus was born. in holland we tell our little children that babies are delivered by a stork, or grow in cabbages (bloemkool). it silly but it’s difficult how babies are made, you understand….
well, i can tell lots and lots of things, but grow-ups who think they found the true, one and only god, don’t like people who believe something else. perhaps you don’t understand it now, but the’re people who believe in allah, or jahweh, or fsm, or believe that buddha said some wise things, or they follow their own conscience. but some religious people don’t like that and kill for their beliefs, so girls of your age get killed, or their parents get killed…i hate that, because i love people and life. it’s not perfect, but…
i hope you understand why some people are very concerned and even angry…

Please give us the reference, chapter and verse, where your savior recommends those violent actions toward people that you visit but may not agree with your mythology.
Your rage demonstrates clearly that you are out of rational debating strategies. Why don’t you stay in school and learn science, math, and philosophy? It will make the world seem a much safer place than what you’ve heard from the pulpit. Start by studying this observation by astronomer Carl Sagan:
“How is it that hardly any major religion has looked at science and concluded, ‘This is better than we thought! The Universe is much bigger than our prophets said, grander, more subtle, more elegant. God must be even greater than we dreamed’? Instead they say, ‘No, no, no! My god is a little god, and I want him to stay that way.’” – Carl Sagan
