why do people constantly keep trying to use the word science as though it is synonymous with evolution. Rachel did it in her little segment. Darwin’s THEORY of evolution isn’t science.

^^ Somebody does know what science is, or what a theory is. A scientific theory is not a guess. Darwin’s theory of evolution is a product of science and its methods, and in fact is a very good example of science at it’s best. Evolution is for all practical purposes a fact, much like the theory that the sun is at the center of the solar system is a fact, or that atoms exist, etc.

“why do people constantly keep trying to use the word science as though it is synonymous with evolution. Rachel did it in her little segment. Darwin’s THEORY of evolution isn’t science.”

To me it’s not that big a deal, because virtually all of the scientific community agree with the theory of evolution. It’s like saying gravity isn’t science. Well, one day we may have a better idea of what it is or where it came from or why it’s so weak, and it is only a small part of physics which is only a part of science, but anyone who today adopts “intelligent falling” is just an idiot.

You also capitalized the word “theory”, as if you were suckered by the creationist movement. A scientific theory is a theoretical framework that explains a phenomenon, and that withstands the evidence thrown against it. In the common vernacular, a theory is more like a fact.

“Darwin’s THEORY of evolution isn’t science.”

WRONG! You show absolutely no understanding of the word ‘theory,’ which doesn’t surprise me at all. Evolution forms the entire base of biology as we understand it, and evolution has countless ‘facts’ to back up the theory, so yes, evolution is considered very sound science. Although I am certain you are also someone who rejects the ‘theory’ of gravity. Go away idiot and read some actual science books on the subject (free of religious dogma) before you spout of any more of your nonsense.

In a show like RM’s, the whole theology of the loose canon cannot all be explained, but it’s all in The Gospel of the FSM. Also remember that the only orthodox dogma to which all Pastafarians adhere is the absolute prohibition of religion in the public schools science curriculum. Beyond that, Pastafarian beliefs are about as unified as a herd of cats.

As regards the reference to our religion as “satire,” the FSM does not care if people believe in Him or not, so it is of little consequence if we are mischaracterized in Rachel’s report. It is more important that we have received the attention. There will be so many more people who will be touched by His Noodly Appendage.

Only 39% of US Americans “believe” in Darwinism??!!!!! (the very choice of the words “believe in” instead of “accept” or “agree with” or “admit” speaks volumes about the whole US religion-based “forma mentis”)
And what about the 36% with no opinion?? does that mean they don’t know anything about Darwinism or understand what it says??!!!!!
Christ! the situation is far worse than I expected….. I can only hope they fucked up the demographics of the survey and mostly asked the opinions of rednecks in the Bible-belt….. otherwise it would seem that the US is truly benighted and wallowing in medieval superstition and ignorance! I don’t know the figures but I think (And hope!) that if you asked folks in Europe it would be something like 70% or more who accept the validity of Darwin’s theories (even including the Christians of various persuasions, who seem to have managed to reconcile faith and Science somehow… must be something to do with a long history of pluralistic values based on European multiculturalism and exchange of ideas and opinions… despite the occasional war I’m afraid!).
It’s all pretty scary stuff….. now I can see the vital need for Pastafarianism even more. Keep the Jolly Roger flying guys!

    Arthur,

you label intelligent falling (IF) as ‘idiot’? It is not only obvious that things ‘fall’ because His Noodly Appendage is pushing things down, it is also scripture about the how and why. If the FSM chooses so, things might ‘fall’ sideways or even upward. As a matter of fact this happens all the time, but gets unnoticed because to test our Faith, his Noodly Appendage will then push our eyelids down for us not to see these ‘anomalies’.
I have discovered and pictured rock hard geological evidence that ‘Intelligent Falling’ controlled by the FSM is a fact and not a theory.

In fact ‘gravity’ is just a theory and it is a theory in crisis!

THEORY of evolution is part of a conspiracy. Other parts of this conspiracy are the atomic theory, germ theory of disease, and theory of relativity. The name of that conspiracy is reality, which as is obvious here, is part of a bigger liberal plot.

If only there were a legal basis for denying the benefits of science to those who reject its findings.

Can you imagine the screams that would come from the religious fundamentalists if they were denied all forms of medical care that have been invented since the publication of “On the Origin of Species!” After all, aren’t both scientific and technological advances forms of evolution?

Science in its most fundamental form, the theory of evolution being one of the more basic theories (read that as: “logical organizing framework”) of science (which, for the uninitiated or simply ignorant) is a method, not a body of knowledge. Mathematics and logic are but two of the tools.

If religious fundamentalists (of any stripe) lived up to their professed belief systems, they would eschew any treatment which did not exist at the time of the formation of their respective religion. Anyone who does otherwise is engaging in hypocrisy of the worst sort.

It seems that there is an easy explanation for the differences between the zealots’ belief in evolution and our enlightened belief. That is; we will evolve, they won’t. Yet another reason we should show them kindness and understanding since they won’t be around after we develop organic air conditioning for the coming warm period.

Maybe it’s because the Vatican is actually inside Rome, our capital city, but still… sometimes I’m scared at the way things go here. Our government tried to impose the teaching of Creationism and ID in our schools too, and many of our politicians stated publicly that they do not believe (yes, believe) in Darwinism. Among these politicians, there is also our prime minister.

@42 Thumper – I thought it was “Newton’s Law of Gravity” not theory …

I think the reason that people stopped calling logical organizing frameworks “Laws” and started calling them “Theories” is pretty much a convention, not a rule. It’s just a recognition of the fact that Science will never be finished in the sense that every discovery leads inevitably to more questions. Back in Newton’s day, they figured that his “Law of Gravitation” was the final explanation for all time to the question of why things fall down, only this spoiler called Einstein came along with his “Theory of General Relativity” and refined it for a more complete set of circumstances.

Here’s a distinction that’s lost on our more reality-challenged compatriots – Einstein’s Theory doesn’t make Newton’s Law any less true; it just shows where “The Law” wasn’t the whole answer. I wonder if they think the Bible is up to that sort of challenge?

An elaborate spoof on Intelligent Design, The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is neither too elaborate nor too spoofy to succeed in nailing the fallacies of ID. It's even wackier than Jonathan Swift's suggestion that the Irish eat their children as a way to keep them from being a burden, and it may offend just as many people, but Henderson, described elsewhere as a 25-year-old "out-of-work physics major," puts satire to the same serious use that Swift did. Oh, yes, it is very funny. -- Scientific American
