Technically speaking, atheism is indeed a religion, or at the very least a religious belief. It is the belief that there is no god, and this belief cannot be proved or disproved by either empirical data or logical reasoning.
Agnosticism, now, THAT is not a religious belief. Agnosticism states that the truth about the existence or non-existence of god cannot be known. This statement can be proven by logical argument (it also has empirical data to back it up – i.e. there are many observed instances of unproved religious beliefs).
The whole idea behind the Letter to the Kansas School Board, by the way, seems closer to agnosticism than to atheism.

I was an agnostic myself for many years, but in a darlky emotional period I backslid into atheism. A shame, but what can you do?
    hmmm… Become a pastafarian, maybe?

    RAmen!

It is called a religion so that atheists cant be rounded up and slaughtered just like Catholics (much to my dismay) can’t be because of what their religion is.

  3. Jake says:

Atheism in the eye of the government is a religion so that people who are atheist are not discriminated against or like catcholics (much to my dismay) cant be rounded up and killed.

Atheism is as much a religion as “bald” is a haircut, “barefoot” is a type of shoes or not having a hobby is a hobby. Atheism is not a belief either, it is a lack of belief: not beleving that there is a god is not the same as believing that there is none.

I consider myself an atheist and my position is: there is not enough evidence for me to believe that there is a god (whichever god). I take the same position whether it is god, santa claus, the tooth fairy or the Loch Ness monster and not believing in the tooth fairy is neither a belief nor a religion.

But I believe in the Flying Spaghetti Monster (of course)

  5. Robbo says:

Pastafarians are not atheists. We believe in the true deity (the Flying Spaghetti Monster) who created all things. We have as much right to our beliefs as any other religion.

    Discusses?
Hmmm methinks the title of the vid is also wrong (in addition to Bill), that wasn’t very discussiony (^_~)

  8. Rickibird says:

“Atheism is a religion” – Just because the US courts declare that does not make it true. It makes the ruling wrong.

The rest of the planet laughs at such a ruling and this is the kind of thing (Like the push for ID) which embarrasses the US internationally.

I believe that baseball caps have peaks. Is there a religion for that belief too?
