Let It Be…and where is a world that has no people with opinions? I want to go there. Cause like we are so full of ourselves and contain so much nonsense and waste trees for paper and libraries of old beliefs and systems that still are not working effectively…that we are lucky to be able to cuss away the demonic spirits of stupidity.

I think the girl is a very good (looking) spokesperson for anything. Great to have her speaking about our Deity.
Ps: I don’t think we are silly just because we don’t believe that the shepherds were out on the fields herding the sheep at the time of the year when the sheep are not there.

That was difficult to sit through. I really hate Bill O’Reilly. He thinks he’s the only person on earth who understands anything. I think she did a better than average job of sticking to her point.
Great one Bruce, and I’m going to take up the sport of not jogging too. Atheism can possibly qualify as a “religious viewpoint” since it is the viewpoint that I don’t want religion controlling my life. But not a religion.
And YES I vote for Bobby to go on the Colbert Report. That would be awesome!

To Cathie (post 46) still here (and BlackBard… a bit)
in your phrase “We’ve given into arguing as an American past time”
You should write it “pastime”… if such arguing was all in a “past time” I think you’d agree it would be OK!
You seem to like one-syllable words… also “What ever” should be spelled “Whatever”. I’ll give “the sun set” (instead of just the noun “sunset”) the benefit of the doubt, but “toater” is spelled without the A (toter).
If you want your energetic ranting to be taken seriously I suggest you get a good spell-check on your computer and read some English literature (or the dictionary)!
You say (in Post 51… couldn’t you have written one post instead of 6?) “where is (sic) a world that has no people with opinions? I want to go there.”
OK… all well and good… but then you say :
“1) Cause like we are so full of ourselves and 2) contain so much nonsense and 3) waste trees for paper and libraries of 4) old beliefs and systems that still are not working effectively”
I can count 4 (rather strong) opinions in a single phrase here…
if you want to go to a world that has no people with opinions I would suggest you get rid of (at least some) of your own… otherwise they’ll never let you into that little paradise you’re dreaming of!

Dont you just love how O’Reilly so presumptuously labels the “atheist” sign as “inappropriate”, as if he is the arbiter of all things “appropriate”. That’s how these people captured the presidency and the culture for the last 20 years–by stealing the frame. They just frame the debate the way that best serves them and their timid-ass opponents wind up apologizing for themselves because their playing on the right wings home court. Don’t know how many metaphors I mixed there, but I think the meaning is clear nontheless: The only way to beat these people is to reframe the debate on our own terms and thereby play on our home turf. And O’Reilly is the mother of all douche bags.
Ramen.

Atheist who put up hate signs like that annoy the hell out of me, like honestly, fanatical atheism is just as bad as fanatical religion.
You cant prove the existence of a god and you can’t disprove it, and by making hateful signs you are lowering yourself to the same level as people like the “Westborough Baptist Church”

I have to say, I am a closet conservative (at least fiscally, not really on the social issues. I ocassionally do watch Bill, and yes, I did vote for McCain).
But here, Bill O and any social conservative who agrees with him is just being a complete fucking asshole. That athiest sign is not in violation of the “decorum” of the capitol building, did he even fucking look at it? If it said anything pro-jesus, he never would have questioned its lack of appropriateness. The problem is he hates athiests because we don’t believe in his silly-ass religion nonsense.
But he knows he has no case this time (sometimes he does guys, sometimes other athiests and progressives are the assholes) But not this time, so he says shit like “it violates the decorum”. If it said “Fuck Jesus” then he could argue it is hatefull, but it doesn’t even mention Christianity at all. So he is just being a bitch.
He also hates homosexuals for reasons similar to the reasons he hates athiests.
Fuck you, Bill

So let me get this straight. Bill actually proposes that the Governor should have allowed the religious items but should have rejected the secular ones? So the government should take an active role in deciding what types of expression are appropriate?

I love the Freedom From Religion Foundation. I went to their convention in Chicago, and wore my FSM Tee-shirt. Not only was I the most elegantly dressed, many people recognized the sign of FSM. So that means that FSM members and FFRF members are kin – they are both free thinkers!

Nigetron,
I agree one can’t disprove the existence of a god. However, it is very simple to prove the existence of a god, at least, if you are that god: simply appear. Remember, most religious beliefs tell us that god(s) were highly accessible to people, at least more so than these days. Jesus supposedly walked among us…Abraham had to avert his eyes in order to not be killed by the sight of god passing in front of him. Not to mention all the things Zeus and his buddies did with, and to, the ancient Greeks. So, why do these types of things not happen anymore? Let’s have god come on down and have some one-on-one with the good people of current day planet Earth, if s/he exists.

“@ #20 – My understanding (of the law in America at least, or those places with a universal Bill of Rights) is that you cannot discriminate against someone based on religion, or their ‘lack’ thereof. This has been upheld in various Supreme Court cases where the rulings have been in favour of the atheists involved. While atheism is, simplistically, the doctrine or belief that there is no God, it is still an expression of religious belief and therefore classified as a religion for the purpose of the law. Don’t think on it too hard – it makes your brain go like overcooked sphaghetti”
This was my understanding of it as well when “atheism” is considered a religion. Is it a religion, no, but for the sake of the law and protection from discrimination on basis of beliefs, yes, it is. (ie, I cannot be fired simply for being an atheist)

I will agree with bill on one thing: “atheism is not a religion”
That’s pretty much be an oxymoron, and to label atheism as a religion would mean we’d have to keep atheism out of the government, which would mean the government wouldn’t be allowed to consider empirical evidence.

“Whaaa, I want my Christmas just the way I like it.” “Whaaa, The atheist put up a sign that I don’t like.”" Whaaa, everybody owes me a ‘Merry Christmas’.” (Nod to Artie Lange)

Nigetron: you are dead wrong. To say “you can’t disprove God” is exactly putting God in the same position as Apollo, Zeus, Thor, and scores of other deities that no one takes seriously.
And the atheist sign is not hateful-it does not suggest or condone violence. It is simply dissent, and as such it is protected speech.
Atheism is not a religion. It is, however, a viewpoint on religion, which can be presented along others.

Technically speaking, atheism is indeed a religion, or at the very least a religious belief. It is the belief that there is no god, and this belief cannot be proved or disproved by either empirical data or logical reasoning.
Agnosticism, now, THAT is not a religious belief. Agnosticism states that the truth about the existence or non-existence of god cannot be known. This statement can be proven by logical argument (it also has empirical data to back it up – i.e. there are many observed instances of unproved religious beliefs).
The whole idea behind the Letter to the Kansas School Board, by the way, seems closer to agnosticism than to atheism.
I was an agnostic myself for many years, but in a darlky emotional period I backslid into atheism. A shame, but what can you do?
hmmm… Become a pastafarian, maybe?

Atheism is as much a religion as “bald” is a haircut, “barefoot” is a type of shoes or not having a hobby is a hobby. Atheism is not a belief either, it is a lack of belief: not beleving that there is a god is not the same as believing that there is none.
I consider myself an atheist and my position is: there is not enough evidence for me to believe that there is a god (whichever god). I take the same position whether it is god, santa claus, the tooth fairy or the Loch Ness monster and not believing in the tooth fairy is neither a belief nor a religion.
But I believe in the Flying Spaghetti Monster (of course)

“Atheism is a religion” – Just because the US courts declare that does not make it true. It makes the ruling wrong.
The rest of the planet laughs at such a ruling and this is the kind of thing (Like the push for ID) which embarrasses the US internationally.
I believe that baseball caps have peaks. Is there a religion for that belief too?

To # 79:
I agree with you, but that’s not what the woman (didn’t catch her name) meant. She said it in the context of law, and as far as I understand American law (being from Norway, very little), atheism is considered a “religion”, as to not discriminate atheists. The same thing has been done here in Norway, and it’s to make things easier (instead of writing “religion or lack thereof” etc., you just interpret “religion” as “religion or lack thereof”.
I’m sure that’s what the woman meant, but with O’Reilly screaming his usual ignorant bullshit, it didn’t come out accurate enough.
God I hate O’Reilly. His technique is; if you disagree, just talk louder than the other person.
