THE HUNGER ARTISTS THEATRE COMPANY, FULLERTON, CA
PRESENTS THE WORLD PREMIERE COMEDY
FLYING SPAGHETTI MONSTER: THE HOLY MUG OF GROG
December 5th through December 21st, 2008
FULLERTON, CA – The Hunger Artists Theatre Company is proud to present the final show of its 2008 season, Flying Spaghetti Monster: The Holy Mug Of Grog. This follow-up to Hunger Artists’ 2006 hit comedy The Flying Spaghetti Monster Holiday Pageant is written by Artistic Director Jeremy Gable and directed by Associate Managing Director Katie Chidester, and runs from December 5th through December 21st.
The Holy Mug Of Grog centers around Travis Greenwell, an ordinary Subway employee who is known for his love of religious debate. However, debate suddenly turns into adventure when he finds himself on a quest for the last relic of Flying Spaghetti Monsterism: the Holy Mug of Grog. This mug, which belonged to the first midget on earth during The Last Barbecue, has been reported to be unearthed, and it is up to Greenwell, the rumored next prophet of Pastafarianism, to track it down and keep it safe.
Helping him on his journey are a European-accented co-worker, an Ian McKellan-esque professor, a beautiful flight attendant and the last two pirates on earth. What they will uncover is a conspiracy so labyrinth and fantastic, it almost seems to be reminiscent of other religious quest adventures like The Da Vinci Code and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Almost.
Chidester has assembled a cast of some of Hunger Artists’ most talented company members, many of whom are praciting Pastafarians, including Leonard Joseph Dunham, Anthony Galleran, Duncan Hutchinson, Scott Keister, Jessica Lynch, Topher Mauerhan, Garrett T. McDonald, Amber Scott, Kaitlyn Tice and Maile Walker.
Christina Acero will serve as Stage Manager for the production, as well as provide its Sound Design. Set design is by Andrew Vonderschmitt, with Scenic Painting by Antonio Swagler. Costume design is by Margaret McGurr. Prop Design is by David Yu.
Flying Spaghetti Monsterism is currently the world’s fastest growing religion. The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster was started by Bobby Henderson in 2005 when he wrote a letter protesting the Kansas School Board’s decision to include Intelligent Design in the Science curriculum. The letter specified the religion’s origins and beliefs, and threatened legal action if the religion was not taught in schools. It became an Internet phenomenon, spawning a gospel, several knock-off religions, a multitude of merchandise and, of course, a Holiday show.
Playwright Jeremy Gable is the Artistic Director of the Hunger Artists Theater Company. He penned the show’s predecessor, The Flying Spaghetti Monster Holiday Pageant. For Hunger Artists, he has also written Re: Woyzeck, Marat.Sade (Nominee – OC Weekly Theater Award – Best New Play) and pieces for Hunger Artists’ 24 Hour Theater and Dead Letter Office festivals.
“Religion was always a very slippery slope for me, without any answers that I could latch onto,” says Gable. “However, when I heard about Flying Spaghetti Monsterism, it seemed to make the most sense. Its principles are simple – have fun, don’t do anything stupid or mean, love pasta – and its heaven contains a beer volcano and a stripper factory. I was instantly hooked, and I’ve been sharing His Noodlyness’ words ever since.”
Director Katie Chidester is the Associate Artistic Director of the Hunger Artists Theater Company. She directed the world premieres of The Flying Spaghetti Monster Holiday Pageant, The Lutz Radio Show and Emily Brauer’s Searching For Americana, the Orange County premiere of Neil Labute’s bash: latter-day plays (Nomination – OC Weekly Theater Award – Best Production), as well as for Hunger Artists’ Dead Letter Office festival.
“After the success of the first show, it seemed natural to put up another production to continue spreading the sacred word,” says Chidester. “And I’m excited to be working with Jeremy again, mainly because this means that now all debts have been paid off. Seriously, that guy holds a grudge!”

Rats. According to Google Maps, it’s 3161 miles from my house to the theater. I’d never be able to get back home in time for spaghetti dinner. And paying for the gas would use up the mortgage money. You guys need to take the show on the road. Let me know when you get to the northeast. New York doesn’t count, it’s about ten hours south of here.

Truly inspirational to see how Pastafarian values (piracy, midgetry, high carbonhydrated diets) permeate theaters and, probably soon also, cinemas.
The Anti-Pastafarian stablishment from Broadway and Hollywood are already shocked by this unstoppable trend.

Can we get a video of the performance on Youtube or something? I have neither the money or time to travel that far – I live in Ohio.

Though it is probably beyond our understanding why is it that there is a place to put a website everytime we post? Is it so people can go to our personal websites if we have one to know more about us? Because not many people have personal websites. To see our profiles?
And does software/internet piracy count as an act of evangelicalism? Because I want to combat global warming.

If this thing goes on the road, I will travel to see it in the deep south. I would love to watch the bible lovers die from a heart attack :) I just don’t think you will see the same crowd interaction in California as in the deep south
