Vancouver B.C. Pastafarians: counter-protest on November 28th

This Friday, November 28th, 7pm-8pm, at the Havana Theatre in Vancouver, B.C., there will be a Pastafarian counter-protest to the Westboro Baptist Church protest at the same location.

For those who do not know, Westboro Baptist Church is a hate group out of Kansas, best known for picketing funerals of soldiers killed in the Iraq War. From wikipedia:

The church runs numerous websites such as GodHatesFags.com, GodHatesAmerica.com and others expressing condemnation of homosexuality, Roman Catholics, Muslims and Jews, as well as populations it believes are supporting the aforementioned groups, including Chinese, Swedes, Canadians, Irish, British, Mexicans and Americans.

A few weeks ago, the Central Arkansas Pastafarians staged a counter-protest to another Westboro Baptist Church event, causing it to be cancelled. The picture, above, is from this counter-protest. Read more about it here.

Please come if you can, and help put these assholes in their place. Please be civil, we are simply countering their protest with one of our own – don’t get arrested or cause bad press for Pastafarians.

Please spread the word. Dress in pirate regalia if you can. Take pictures.

What: Pastafarian Counter-Protest to Westboro Baptist Church hate event.

When: This Friday, November 28th, 7pm – 8pm

Where: The Havana Theatre in Vancouver, B.C.
1212 Commercial Drive Vancouver, British Columbia

Contact: Pastafarian Ben – he is the man behind this operation. You can reach him at: tremblay47@gmail.com

*NOTE*

What exactly is the Westboro Baptist Church protesting? On Friday, the Havana Theatre in Vancouver is staging a play called The Laramie Project. The Laramie Project is about the reaction to the murder of a gay student named Matthew Shepard in 1998. Matthew Shepard was beaten to death by a hate group because he was gay. He was tortured, tied to a fence and left to die. The Westboro Baptist Church contends the actions were justified and is protesting the play.

In their press release for this event, WBC says “Matt Shepard has been in Hell now for ten years, with eternity left to go on his sentence – without appeal, parole, or time off for good behavior. All else about Matt is trivial and irrelevant. You may join him soon. Deal with it.”

So, who’s coming to ruin Westboro Baptist Church’s day?

Important message from the comments:

If anyone does go, be very careful – Phelps LOVES to antagonize people into physically attacking him and/or his followers, and then sues the hell out of them.

If anyone does go, be very careful – Phelps LOVES to antagonize people into physically attacking him and/or his followers, and then sues the hell out of them.

When Phelps came to Greeley, Colorado, a local group dressed in white and wore big white wings on their back and surrounded Phelps’ group and sang for hours on end, drowning out Phelps’ “God hates Fags” routine. The wings effectively blocked people’s view of all the hate signs Phelps had.

Believe it or not, that all went off with no incidents.

How about setting up a stand with free spaghetti? They’d get a free bowl and a nice pamhlet so the people would have something to read while eating… I’d guess that if someone set up an account where people could donate, you’d have the spaghetti funded all the way.

What the hell? (’hell’ used purely as an exclamation, not in a fires-of-damnation reference) Just looked at that ‘godhatesfags’ site. It is unbelievable what people are doing in the name of ‘God’. The most disturbing part is the people smiling in photos holding placards advertising a whole lot of hate and damnation (for everyone except themselves). And if your printing bulk-lots of hate-posters, a spell check could be good. ‘Feces’ is meant to have an ‘a’ in it. If you really want to know the context, you’ll have to check it for yourself.

Cheers pastafarians- the pity is the pastafarian satire is more sane than what is considered ‘real’ religion in this world.

In grade 12 I took part in our production of The Laraime Project and when I did it was the first time I had heard of Mr. Phelps and ever since not as a homosexual but as a human being with a sense of decency I feel sick to my stomach whenever I hear about this horrble example of humanity. However I am glad that those who stand behind the idea of the FSM do so in a peaceful manner because that makes us so much better than those who use anger and violence.

God made everyone, all races, all areas of the world, mankind can choose to do the worng thing, but being gay is not wrong, and it is not a choice. If God did not want gay persons on earth, then he would not have created them. I hate religion, but I love God.

Mankind has always used “religion” to be what they want. It seems to most often wind causing hurt, war, death, etc…

To the “devout” that “pity” gays, check your own life, I am gay and was in a seven year relationship, never once cheated. I went to a baptist high school, the pastor, stright devout judgmental pastor had a 21 year affair behind his wifes back that finnaly came to light, oh but he prached against the gays…

Your life is between you and God, no one else, as is mine.

Stop hating and start trying to help others. God made us, he loves us and wants us to live good kind lives.

    That’s what I think anyway…

  41. 41 - ET, the Extra Terrestrial - Nov 28th, 2008

    Hello again, Christian.
The correct form for your statement in post #37 would be for you to say that you believe they (gays) die and go to hell. For you to state that as a fact is incorrect. Hell, the fire and brimstone version that xians are so fond of threatening the rest of the world with, was dreamed up by Virgil and embellished by Dante. The xians then glommed onto it as a great way to scare more people into signing up. This link
( http://www.auburn.edu/~allenkc/tbhell.html ) will take you to a paper published in 1855 that thoroughly examines and soundly debunks the idea that the bible ever propounded a doctrine of hell as a place of eternal torment. It’s really too bad that the xian tactic of discouraging any type of questions about their dogma has eradicated your (and many others’) ability to reason and to question anything about xianity. Questioning something does not necessarily mean you have to decide to dismiss it, it means you want to be sure about it. Long ago I started questioning the xian fables that I had been fed as fact, and my reasoning led me to conclude it was a bunch of hooey. Who knows, if you examined your belief dispassionately, you might conclude as I did, or you might not. If you never make the effort to discover why you believe as you do, then in my opinion you are little more than a robot. Your narrow mind allows you to consider only one set of possibilities. Do you know the thousand names of god? No, you only know one, and you deny even the possibility that others may have found a different path that is equally valid. No one is hellbound. There is no hell. We pastafarians do not have a “god mocking attitude”. We merely defend our views and opinions from those who come here and mock us. If you attack me with a sword, I will defend myself with a sword, and because I have the courage of my convictions, I will win. I will also win because I have a bigger vocabulary than those who attack me, and because I can spell. (Riddence. See?) You need to learn to accept others’ viewpoints as valid to them, even if you choose not to accept them as valid to your own life. One of xianity’s primary rules is the doctrine of forgiveness. Not only that the xian god forgives xians who say they’re sorry, but that a good xian forgives his fellow humans for whatever faults they may have, which presumably includes the fault of being a pastafarian (or a gay Muslim, or a Hindu, or whatever). Once you have grown enough to forgive these differences you view as faults, you should no longer feel the need to come here to mock us, to condemn us to an imaginary hell of pain and suffering, and to condemn others for whatever you think they have done wrong. This is the “judge not” part of xianity.
As for the dirtbag hate mongers in the WBC, I wouldn’t be upset if their bus went off a really high bridge. But on the other hand, I wouldn’t run them off the road, because that would make me as bad as they are. I’d love to participate in the counter-protest, but since I live over 3000 miles away, I don’t think I’ll be able to make it. FSM bless all those who do make it.
What the heck. FSM bless everyone else, too.

Dude, are you paying any attention at all? You asked for intelligent, respectful discussion, and I gave you some of my absolute best. I presented my case arguing from your base, not from mine, and you come back with this nonsense? Is that your idea of intelligent discussion? It does seem to be about the best any xian can come up with. Whenever it looks like the other guy is winning the debate, yell loud enough so you can’t hear what the other guy is saying. You are pathetic. You go a long way towards conclusively proving my theory about xian whackos like yourself, that you are completely incapable of rational thought. Anything that goes against your unfounded convictions must be shouted down, stomped into the dirt, and KILLED. You are an intolerant piece of garbage, unworthy of the term human. You may be genetically Homo Sapiens, but you certainly do not demonstrate any relationship to the “Sapiens” part. Go back to your trailer park, and the imaginary life you live through the TV. Whoever says, “I love God,” but hates his brother is a liar. The one who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love the God whom he has not seen. John 4:20

It pays to read the book your thumping.

This anti-gay nonsense from those bunch of inbreds would not be allowed here in England. Under our hate laws the Phelps would be arrested and prosecuted.

As for Christian, it’s a shame you hate gay people.

Did you know your leader liked to hang around with a bunch of men wearing dresses all the time? All that time camping with only men. A man has needs.;-)

    55 – November 29th, 2008 at – Christian Says:

-We know there is fire and lava in the center of the earth. Both God and geologists agree. There, evidence for hell.

Nooooo that’s evidence for it being hot underground. You need to prove that people who have ’sinned’ somehow end up spending eternity trapped there along with malevolent entities that torture them day and night. I think you’d have a hard time finding a geologist who will say that Plate Tectonics leaves room for little chambers full of devils.

-Every civilization mentions dragons. We have their bones. By saying dinosaurs lived millions of years ago your calling every pre-modern civilization a lier. Will you doubt history for theory?

No again. We have dinosaur bones, we’re calling every pre-modern civilization ignorant and superstitious. What happened way back then (probably) is that someone in each culture found dinosaur bones and upon finding them put them together as best as they could. Now without knowing about Fossilization and without Carbon Dating they could only assume that the bones were recent. Therefore they could only assume that these monsters still existed in places the people never went to. In Asia Dragons lived on the tallest mountains, in Europe they lived in the deepest caves or under lakes. Because people couldn’t see them they assumed they existed. Does that sound familiar? I postulate that your god is a dragon. Or a UFO.

-Also, divers have found chariot wheels at the bottom of the Red Sea. Proof of Exodus.

Even if it was an Egyptian chariot wheel it’s only evidence that a chariot wheel fell into the water. Claiming that one wheel with no context proves an event is ludicrous. I can pull a dozen tires out of the nearest lake, but it won’t prove that fish are recreating the Indy 500. Oh and a stones throw from the Red Sea is the Reed Sea whose tide fluctuates so much that you can walk across it at low tide.

-The evidence is really in God’s favor. You have seen the proof. Will you deny it just because you wish it wasn’t true

I am sure that if you stick around long enough we here will be able to debunk every one of your ‘proofs’ no matter how much you wish it weren’t true.

Last chance, Christian. I have just read your post #55, and it really looks like you are regressing to the level of a third grader. I had a brief, faint hope a few days ago that we might have a bit of intelligent discourse, but that hope is fading fast. Molten rock in the Earth’s mantle does not equal the non-biblical hell of eternal pain and torment dreamed up by Virgil and embellished by Dante in the Dark Ages. Please cite some portion of your (sole piece of) reference material that describes hell to be such a place. Please enlighten me as to how the hyperplastic mineral soup of the mantle, under the intense pressure of hundreds of miles of rock, could support any type of chamber in which this imaginary and not-described-in-the-bible realm could exist.
The vast majority of early Native American cultures have no legends of dragons. Early African cultures do not have legends about dragons. Inuit culture has no legends of dragons. Australian aborigine culture does not have legends of dragons. Your statement that “Every civilization mentions dragons” you are lying. Those civilizations that do mention dragons do not have any evidence beyond their legends. It seems to me a far more reasonable assumption to infer that these civilizations found some fossilized dinosaur bones and came up with the best explanation they could, given their primitive level of technology. Just like primitive societies explained thunder and lightning by saying that it was giants fighting in the mountains. Why don’t you think thunder is giants fighting in the mountains? Because science has explained what thunder actually is, that’s why. If you want to give evidence that dragons existed, legends will not do, and you will have to present a well reasoned and intelligent series of arguments that show why over 100 years of scientific paleontological research is wrong. Saying you don’t like it doesn’t work.
You third assertion, that wheels at the bottom of the Red Sea constitutes proof of exodus, is absolutely pitiful. If this is proof in your view, there really is no hope of intelligent discussion between you and the thinking community. Read carefully, now, and TRY to use whatever you pass for a brain. There is probably no ocean, and very few big lakes, without wheels at the bottom. People build boats. They put stuff on them – including stuff with wheels – and sail around from place to place. They have been doing this for thousands of years. Now here’s the amazing part — sometimes the boats sink! Can you imagine! And when they sink, the stuff in them sinks, too! Wow!
It seems to me the one who is wishfully denying reality is you, pal. Come back when you can respond intelligently. You filed miserably this time.

The “proof” of the Exodus that christian offers is the most crazy thing that I have ever heard! So ONE chariot wheel at the bottom of the Red Sea proves that Moses split the Red Sea, does it? The fact is that the Exodus was upwards of 2000+ years ago, if it even occurred. This makes it really unlikely that a SINGLE CHARIOT WHEEL would have survived 2000+ YEARS under SALT WATER!! Not even steel lasts under salt water, which is proved by the fact that the Titanic is already rusting away and it sank a mere 96 years ago.

It’s FAR more likely that somebody dumped a replica chariot wheel overboard so that this “proof” could look convincing.

You folks are expecting rational discussion from a christian? Unrealistic. Do you expect flexibility from government bureaucrats? Truth from politicians? Honesty from used-car salesmen? No chance. Some kinds of people are never going to give out anything but their own variety of the shit which they are full of.

did the protest go on as planed…im awaiting to hear anything…

as for christian…The town I live in has an abandoned limestone quarry that was bought, filled with water and is open to the public to swim, and for scuba diving training, as the quarry is around 350ft deep. The owner of the quarry bought a World War 1 airplane and sank it to the bottom so the divers could learn how to navigate through wreckage at the bottom of where ever their adventures lead them. So by your logic, a WW1 plane in the bottom of the quarry is PROOF that WW1 was fought in Ohio! See how ridiculous that sounds…

Way to go guys good job!

It’s good to know that a determined group of Pastafarians can put an end to disgusting acts like this one lead by the WBC without having to get violent or physical.

Keep up the good work I only wish I could have been there to help out!

An elaborate spoof on Intelligent Design, The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is neither too elaborate nor too spoofy to succeed in nailing the fallacies of ID. It's even wackier than Jonathan Swift's suggestion that the Irish eat their children as a way to keep them from being a burden, and it may offend just as many people, but Henderson, described elsewhere as a 25-year-old "out-of-work physics major," puts satire to the same serious use that Swift did. Oh, yes, it is very funny. -- Scientific American
