Catholic Jesus-Wafer held perilously above a blender.
One of our fellow Pastafarians has angered the Catholic Church with a series of videos in which he ridicules their rituals and beliefs; specifically, that their host wafers become the literal body of Jesus when they are ingested.
A devilishly mischievous Canadian boy who mocks a central Christian ritual on YouTube has caused an international stir and earned the wrath of the Catholic Civil Rights League, which has called for his offensive, and popular, videos to be removed from the Internet.
The teenager from Quebec named Dominique, who tags himself “fsmdude,” has posted 40 videos in which the Catholic Civil Rights group maintains he desecrates the host, the small circular wafer that Catholics ingest during Eucharist service.
The Catholic Civil Rights League claims the videos are “hate speech.” At the other end of the spectrum, some YouTube commentators call them funny and right on. I would speculate most non-Christians would find Dominique’s online antics juvenile.
Should his sacrilegious videos be banned?
Dominique, who appears to be about 17 and speaks as if English is his second language, thinks it’s ridiculous to believe in transubstantiation, the Catholic teaching that the wafer becomes the literal body of Jesus Christ during eucharist.
There’s a great article about this at the Vancouver Sun, complete with videos.
FSMDude’s youtube channel is here – you’ll find no end of eucharist desecration.
I’m interested, what do you all think about this?

Overkill. Now this kid has to do something REALLY sacrilegious to put the point home.

Tactically speaking, I look at this as the equivalent of marching around in a church shouting foul language and flipping off the preacher. Simple, dumb, and plenty enough to get someone kicked out of the church and asked not to come back, but not a crime. He’s basically saying, “Catholicism is dumb,” and leaving it at that. Free speech means quite a bit; for what it’s worth, the US has tolerated the blatherings of Neo-Nazis, Westborough Baptists, and Rush Limbaugh for years in spite of their hateful messages, partly because those folks mostly stop just short of advocating lynchings and open revolt. Relatively speaking, this kid’s barely lighting off a birthday candle.
Strategically speaking, I think he’s low-hanging fruit, and he’s that way by choice, whether he understood that choice or not. Just like doodling Mohammed or putting beef broth into curry meant for a Hindu, fiddling around with the Jeez Nips is a taboo, regardless of how harmless the action is materially. To true believers, silently letting such anathema slide by screws with their odds in the afterlife lotto, which is about the time when the folk who forgot their morning Serenity Prayer start coming unhinged.
Illogical? Yes, but there it is: it’s a 2000-year-old mousetrap doing exactly what it was designed to do, in spite of being dusty, rusty, and oh yeah, old. This kind of spring-loaded contraption needs to be dismantled with care, and that’s going to take time and patient effort, not repeated foot insertions like this. There’s not a heck of a lot to do in re this — unless, of course, someone throws something a lot more potent than “Jeez-flavored Internet Tough Guy” and “New! Jeez-flavored Armchair Philosopher (now with functional webcam!)” at him. Otherwise, it’s probably sensible to just tag his series as a distraction, chuckle if desired, and move on.

I always thought that Pastafarianism wasn’t about direct hatred to other religions. I don’t hate other religions I just think that their doctrines of dogma are stupid. I’m 18 and when I told my parents I wasn’t a Christian then started to go into Pastafarianism they were appalled and said that it was a hate group towards Christians. It’s not suppose to be a hate group at all, just a group that rejects dogma outright.
His videos may be amusing but I think that most of it is childish and very offensive towards Christians. He is giving Pastafarians that bad image that most people see them as, anti-Christian.

When there are already 50 posts, it is hard to find much to add to the discussion. Please accept these comments on some of the previous posts as my contribution. I agree with post #23 from Red Dutchpasta Wench. She said:
“Dumb as I think the catholic beliefs are, this is not a good way of going about it. It is unnecessarily hurtfull to other people. They have all the right in the world to believe what they want, as long as they remember to return the favour.
I still think it is not necessary to go out of your way to hurt people.”
We Pastafarians receive enough hate mail to choke some servers. We rightly take offense. There are other ways to get our point across without intentionally hurting.
Post #35 from Will Said:
“The joy for me about FSM has always been how it successfully undermined all religions without causing any overt offence. It isn’t that i mind offending religious types, but only that the FSM argument is so much easier to be ignored when it can be dismissed as religion-hating or similar.”
This is exactly the way I feel about being a Pastafarian. It makes me feel happy be part of the glorious mission of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Educating those who have yet to be Touched by His Noodly Appendage does not need to be carried out in a cruel manner. Just think of how nice it feels to be bathed in the warmth of His Sauciness, and you will know that hate and cruelty are out of the question.

Update: The videos were removed from youtube by FSM dude, due to him getting a paper letter home – apparently, someone found out his address and sent an angry letter to his (his dad’s actually) house.
So, youtube is now more politically correct. Now, let’s petition against all videos showing someone eating spaghetti, advise the cow worshipping guys to get pissed at mcdonald videos…
While we’re at politically correctifying youtube, well, lets remove anything that offends anyone. I guess some more nutty muslims might get offended by women outside of the black robe thingie… so let’s remove those.
Let’s see, what else is offensive? I really hate citrus fruit! All videos depicting it must go! Don’t get me going on pineapples…
So, here’s to de-contentification! The crybabies won again!

OMG some of the cemments on here make me ashamed.
#42 and #45 you are being stupid so you cannot be TRUE pastafarians; please stop calling yourselves pastafarians. (that was IRONY for those who missed it)
Whats with the ‘Respect the believer but not the belief’ comments? THAT’S WHAT HE’S DOING! He hasn’t beaten up any x-tians, or said that they’re inherantly bad, should be killed, or should be silenced. All he said was a cracker is not a person.
‘it’s giving the FSM a bad name among christians’ have you SEEN the hatemail section?
Im seeing yet more ‘He shouldn’t say he’s a pastafarian’ He IS a pastafarian, deal with it. Please understand that he’s not doing it in the name of the FSM, i haven’t hear him mention the FSM in any of his videos. Analogy; if someone called ‘extremeforjesus’ disses emos in a video you can’t say that it’s xtianity’s fault OR that he should not call himself ‘extremeforjesus’.
#45 you get a rebuttal all of your own (lucky you!). You start with ‘He’s not a TRUE pastafarian’ then say that we should respect others (two out of three, good work). Then you say it’s hate speech, he’s a racist, you hope he gets punished (would stoning him to death be appropriate?). I really hope you are a christian troll posting as a pastafarian because i don’t want to believe that any of my fellow pirates could be so stupid. WOW.
Wikipedia says ‘Hate speech is a term for speech intended to degrade, intimidate, or incite violence or prejudicial action against a person or group of people’ Please explain how crushing a cracker degrades christians? How it intimidates them? How it incites violence against them? Saying it’s hatespeech dimishes the struggle of groups that actually recieve hatespeech (i.e. homosexuals should be killed). All he did was MOCK christians. That’s not hatespeech.
Oh and i don’t think anyone here would be pissed about someone blending up spaghetti, except for the waste of food.
Please excuse the terrible fundie-like grammar and spelling; im so frustrated with these people.

Second, for any of you dipshits that say “this is disrespectful towards other religions” needs to get a clue. THE WHOLE IDEA OF FSM IS TO MAKE FUN OF RELIGIONS. Damn, were you kids dropped on your heads as children or something? You whining about so called “hate speech” is pathetic as well, it isn’t hate speech, it is FREE SPEECH. I cannot say I agree with the desecration of what a following believes holy and does not hurt anyone is a good idea. I was raised catholic but now consider myself a pastafarian. All I have to say about this is that there are extremists in every group and they should not be held as representatives of their beliefs. The Eucharist does not hurt anybody nor does it force any incorrect facts on people. It is a piece of bread that has been blessed by a person who has strong enough beliefs in his religion to make a job out of it. Therefor since it is not hurting anyone I do not think it should be mutilated for no better reason than raising anger against for pure spite.

@Tomek. Are you one of the Christian Hillybilly redneck Bush supporting white trash Republicans who gave us this mess and expects us to believe your stupid, illiterate, irrational, nonsensical screed under threat of eternal torture? Bet you think if one of us gets cancer or has a heart attack that it’s the old guy in the sky personally reaching out and touching us with the finger of his vengeance.
Yet in the next breath I bet that if a small child gets cancer you’ll be the first one to point out that “No one can understand the ways of the Lord”.
And, I bet, you don’t even see the contradiction of holding these two positions in your mind even when I bring them into close justaposition for you.
Bet you’re really that lacking in self awareness, bet you’re really that irrational and self-deluded.
No wonder you hate us. It’s a reflection of the hatred that wells from within, now isn’t it.

So when the “blessed wafer” is eaten and it becomes the “body of Jesus,” does that make Catholics cannibals?
Luckily, eating our blessed one only results in a full stomach…yummy.

Hey, Tomek, what an awful thing to do with pasta. First, why don’t you get proper long spaghetti like grown-ups eat. Second, you put the lid on the pot to cook it – that makes it sticky. Thirdly, eating it with tomato ketchup is really gross. Tomato ketchup tastes awful. Bacon, muhrooms, anchovies and olives would be much better.

Haven’t read the comments yet; please pardon if this duplicates other remarks.
Having been a devout Catholic acolyte in my youth, I’d like to remind our Christian friends that the Eucharistic wafer is not holy until it has been blessed by a priest — and I strenuously doubt that this young man would have been able to obtain blessed wafers. I’m sure he ordered his un-blessed wafers over the Internet — many sites offer them. I haven’t seen the videos yet, so I can’t make any claims re the content other than to affirm that he is not desecrating anything holy. And he is most likely supporting Catholic religious by purchasing their altar goods. So, please don’t get your knickers in a twist over this issue when so many of our fellows are suffering and dying from poverty and the slow starvation of fascism (aka socialism for the rich) and imperialism. Please use your energies to help those around you — spreading love will make you feel much better than wallowing in hate.
I’d also like to point out that FSMism’s primary purpose is not to mock religion. Please read Bobby Henderson’s open letter to the Kansas School Board. The primary purpose is to mock the teaching of religion in the science classroom. Since I am sure that you would want your children to receive the best education possible, I hope we can all agree that that is a worthy goal.
Re the use of FSMism to mock religion, it is unfortunate that so many Pastafarians adopt a mocking tone — it reduces the common denominator of the discussion to mud-slinging and name-calling. However, our religious friends might want to think seriously about some of the points being made: if it seems obvious to you that FSMism is a made-up religion, then it seems equally obvious that your religion seems equally made up to someone who doesn’t follow it. Thus, Christianity seems made-up to Muslims and Jews, Islam seems made-up to Christians, and all religions seem made-up to non-religious people — all religion looks like Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and leprechauns to the un-indoctrinated or recovering post-indoctrinated. Please try to remove your blinkers and think rationally about your religion and why it doesn’t make sense to non-followers. Here is a great place to start: http://whywontgodhealamputees.com/.
Being religious is fine as long as you really understand what you are doing and why (because it makes you happy) … and as long as you can be tolerant of those who do not follow your religion.

XX_EE,

As a Catholic Priest and Pastafarian I am distressed by what this man did. Let me ask everyone: If someone came into your home, took something you did not want them to have, and you found it on a web site the next day destroyed with a running commentary of taunting language toward you, how would you feel? Upset and disappointed at the very least I would bet. In case you think this analogy doesn’t fit because the Eucharist is given to everyone, you are wrong. All are welcome at Catholic liturgies, but we do ask that if you do not agree with us on what the Eucharist is, that you do not receive it. It is not only a mystical reality, it is a sign of Catholic unity. To denigrate it is to denigrate every Catholic. Also, I need to comment on the mistakes in Theology that have been made in these posts – and evidently by Dominique himself. (I joined this discussion after his videos were removed). First, we believe that the Eucharist is the RISEN Lord’s presence – not a human body curled up in a little disc, or part of a human body. DNA tests would not work on a spiritual reality. This is not unique to Catholicism. Almost every Faith tradition holds that God is powerfully present in various objects, images, prayers or places. Aa Pastafarians are we condoning the desecration of anywhere that people believe God’s presence is? Second, Philosophy tells us that to try to prove that something doesn’t exist is illogical – and thus, un-Pastafarian. One can only prove – to a certain degree – that various things are present in a given place at a given time within the context of the scientific observer. Third, since Catholics believe that the presence of God in the Eucharist is the risen Lord, and not a physical human body, no one can “torture” it and more than they can “tickle” it and make it laugh. It would be like taking the presence of Christ that many Christians believe is in the Word of God, proclaimed verbally, and trying to desecrate the sound waves that carry the words. One doesn’t end up doing much to the sound waves, but one does make oneself look petty and un-intelligent. As a Catholic Priest I do believe in some scientifically unverifiable phenomenon. But I do not believe in an unreasonable or un-logical Faith. As a Pastafarian I was happy to challenge anything in my faith or any other faith traditions that defy reason or logic. But as neither a Catholic or Pastafarian can I condone taking things from others by deceit and deliberately and publicly defiling them.

This is why people hate atheists. You can believe what you believe, just don’t f**k with what others believe unless there open to discussion. Simple manners.
Now I was raised Catholic, and have become an agnostic/atheist of my own choosing. Most legitimate atheists are atheists because either they see no grounds for the existence of god(s) or are tired of religion’s pretentious, hypocritical, and often belligerent nature. However, I see more and more people becoming atheists because its the ‘cool’ thing to do, by sticking it to ‘the man’ and being a ‘rebel’ instead of converting because you believe it.
Don’t interfere with others business unless it either interferes with you or is directly harmful in nature. Nobody like it when you just start preaching things to them. Why do you think Jehovah’s Witnesses are so disliked? Why has the world taken a stance against radical Islamics? Or the persecution in the Spanish Inquisition? Sure, these are extreme examples, but they all stem from the same idea: trying to force your beliefs on others. You shouldn’t care if a catholic says to another catholic the the eucharist represents the body of christ, just as they shouldn’t care if you say to another atheist that there is no god. your beliefs are your own, do not impose them on others. And likewise, don’t try to blatantly insult others on a personal opinion, particularly if it has not to do with you.

To all who support the removal of fsmdude’s videos,
You think you are angry?! I am angry!! I am angry that once again supposedly ‘holy people’ are using threats of bodily harm to intimidate a 19 year old boy into taking down his videos.
Wow that’s pretty rich! I have to see lurid, demeaning, pornographic videos/pictures/comments about women and young girls in every single facet of my life in the name of “free speech” and “entertainment for men”.
I am subjected to horrific, false pictures and information about abortion; my 10 year daughter has learned from our society, that if you are not Christian you do not dare tell your beliefs. She’s not even sure what will happen, but she feels somehow afraid despite the fact that we tell her that everyone has a right to their beliefs.
And you people are angry and upset because a person took a cracker that *he* asserts is the body of Christ and did “mean things” to it????? Are you f**king kidding me???? Hell! My daughter’s right to live free from pervasive, sexist, demeaning images be damned! Let’s *really* go after this guy —– I mean, *he* broke a cracker, *wilfully*, probably whilst laughing maniacally! Is there no justice!!!!
For God’s sake, you don’t like the video – FINE! Debate, discuss, rant, rage, be proactive but really, I mean it, for *God*’s sake, ACT LIKE AN ADULT. Honestly, to threaten and intimidate another human’s *personal safety* because he put a f**king cracker in a blender?????
Please tell me, at the playground in the sandbox, do you guys all wallop the kid next to you because he makes a picture of your mom and then jumps on it?????
I’m thinking that your god, whoever he or she is, would probably prefer you stick to addressing the issues at hand, rather than stooping to threats.
I’m thinking that, when you stoop to threats you not only make yourself look bad but make the rest of us wonder – did you really have nothing more powerful in all of your godly teachings to fight back with than “Nja nja now I’m going to tell your Daddy on you and tell everyone where you live nja nja”.
I’m thinking that when this sort of thing occurs, it reminds me far, far too much of a little thing called “suppression of ideas in the name of ideology” which reminds me far too much of some *little* things involving people like Hilter and the Taliban.
I’m thinking that we, as a society, can do better than rejoicing that an *allegedly* offensive website (how am I now to know, if I can’t see it?!) was taken off for the wrong reasons.
I’m thinking that, if I was your god, I’d be mighty embarrassed that I hadn’t taught you better.

The point of FSM is not to make fun of other religions.
Doing so would make us assholes, and, I quote from the gospel, “pastafarians are not assholes.”
The point is to ensure pseudo-science is never considered science, and that it says the fuck away from our government.
Religion is already a plague to the planet, and this one is entirely made to anchor the other religions in place… to keep them from completely taking over…
Anyone who disagrees should re-read the open letter to the Kansas City School Board and think about it.
So, yes, this was a childish and horrible thing to do. It in no way represents the ideas of FSM.
This boy is an immature, spiteful teenager who is just angry and wants to attack something. (More or less)
