As a former Folklore MA student (about to be MLS), I can say that this was a very gutsy paper to write. Few within the field of folklore know how to handle internet communities. My professional opinions... 1. Excellent approach to the topic for undergraduate work (although I've seen some grad papers which were of a similar quality...). 2. I wonder what the assignment was, because it's likely that this didn't actually meet the professor's original expectations. 3. Focusing a bit more on the overtly political use to which this concept is put (both historically and as a symbol for covert individual identification and critique) would give the project a bit more punch, and go beyond the "here is a folk group, I've now identified and defined them, isn't it nice!" aspect. You have now identified the followers of the FSM; now, why the heck is this important??? (The internet approach helps, but isn't underscored enough). 4. Hurrah for your citations and historical research; few people think about AFS presidential or invited speaker presentations when writing their research papers. 5. Try citing some of the people who have done work with the internet and religion (it's a hot topic), like Bill Ellis. 6. Give me competing definitions and takes on traditionalization, the creation of the traditional, tradition itself, etc.; at the very least, acknowledge the controversy. 7. Superbly laid out as far as making the case that an online community DOES constitute acommunity, especially a folk community. I like the idea that traditions are easier to create on the internet. Smart idea, please develop and expand! 8. Glad you stated your level of participation in the community, it's always necessary to be reflective in modern acadamia. All in all, a fitting (and fittingly dry) analysis of the cult of the Flying Spaghetti Monster from a folklore standpoint.
