I don’t understand why you all hate God. Why don’t you believe He exists? I read in an earlier message that the Bible is filled with historical errors. Actually, it is very historically accurate. Christianity has been around since the beginning of time – it just didn’t have the name Christianity. The belief in God was the very first religion, until man sinned.

I’ve only read a little of this chain–sorry, but it is repetitious. Ideas I didn’t see in it:
1. If standard God [the fairly typical referent of JudeoChristoMuslim discourse] is omnipresent and eternal and outside of time, and also omniscient, then Christianity [purportedly] existed from the beginning of time, in His [henceforward please read '/Her/It's'] mind. And there’s no nobler existence than that, plus it lets the birth of Christ satisfy the Ontological Argument.
2. But by the same token, the FSM has existed forever, even before the invention of Spaghetti, and the Ontological Argument can be stretched, like Dough, to explain not just the invention of Spaghetti, but also of Meatballs and the pasta machine.
3. Doubtless someone has mentioned Walter Kaufmann’s argument that [maybe except for the multitudes who have seen pictures from the Sistine Chapel] everyone, as provable by interviews, has different ideas of God–does He have a human aspect, or some other aspect, or is He a non-visible essence? If the former, is He male, female, hermaphrodite, or what; what color is His hair [and, it follows, what are the other racial/ethnic facts about Him?], what shape is his nose, and is he right-handed or left-handed? [Sistine Chapel-->left-handed] At least for the PSM, we have a much clearer sense of what He looks like, and even is composed [in the most spiritual sense possible, of course] of.

Lol, I’m not goin to bother to read through the 16 pages of what anyone else wrote. So if I reitterated somthing, please excuse me. Anyways, the bible is full of error. It’s also pieces of other stories that were put into the bible. Read Gilgamesh. Noah? Yeah he’s in that story too. Just a different name. Garden of Eden? Yeah thats there too, but with more realism. Which came first? Gilgamesh. So um…Christianity started from the beginning? Since Gilgamesh is the product of a Polytheistic religion, and you can safely assume alot of the bible was borrowed from Epics similiar if not Gilgamesh. You can safely assume that by YOUR thought process. Christianity was apparently polytheistic. Since it’s from the beginning and all. But wait, it’s not. So what does that mean? Duur Dur Dur. I don’t understand why another religion existing matters to you. How do you know Christianity is “real”? The bible may have parts that are historically correct, but so many books were burned throughout history before manuscripts were transferred, information was lost, stuff was made up. People all “gaga” over Christianity are to blind to realize that a good amount of the new testament is an assortment of true and false information. And the beginning of time was about hundreds of thousands of YEARS before Christ was born; and Christianity is Christianity, nothing else. So it has NOT been around since the beginning of time. There were other religions before Christianity. Ever heard of Paganism? That was a belief before the belief in God last time I checked… See God wasn’t really that “popular” before Christ. Don’t think these people hate God, they just believe in something different. And that is fine. They aren’t sinning. They are doing whats right for them.

why should we believe in god? all religion has brought is hypocrisy to the world, such that the preaching of values and a set guideline of morality has become synomonous with some of the worst war, murder and hate crimes among other things. wat do suicide bombers shout as they blantantly murder anyone who does not fit in with their beliefs? how many wars have been fought for GOD and country. The time has come for people of reason to say: enough is enough. Religious faith discourages independent thought, it’s divisive, and it’s dangerous. For many people, part of growing up is killing off the virus of faith with a good strong dose of rational thinking. But if an individual doesn’t succeed in shaking it off, his mind is stuck in a permanent state of infancy, and there is a real danger that he will infect the next generation. Religion is a form of manipulation to keep you in the dark, and lacking the capacity of critical thinking. I do not respect anybody who believes in the utter bullshit of religion, and i hope as you lie on your deathbed despondent of your wasted life you think of this post as a point in which you could have salvaged the pitiful wreck of humanity to which you have been reduced, and broken free of the intellectual shackles of GOD and his promises, and really made something of your life for there is no salvation, no lovely dreamlike existence. The only promise is a deep dark hole six feet under, and for me i would rather that than an eternity of putting up with the vengeful and jealous overgrown infant that is GOD. Christianity is not the first religion. It comes from Judaism, which is also not the first religion. Chinese mythology began waaaaaaaay earlier than Christianity. It began sometime around 12 century B.C., while Christianity began around in the first century (A.D. 1 to A.D. 100, sometime then). So as you can see, Chinese mythology predates Christianity by about 1,200 years.
And how can you say that the Bible is accurate? You get passages about how God is fearsome and angry, and another one about how he is peaceful. Then, there are passages saying that the world shall never end, and others proclaiming how it shall be destroyed.

It does not sound like your belief in god is improving your life at all. You have other options, you know. Lots of us here have changed our minds, either by changing to a new religion that we like better, or dumping religion altogether. And no god ever struck any of us with lighting for doing that!

So try seeking out something else. It won’t hurt you. Learn about some other faiths. See if some other religion just makes more sense about why there is evil in the world. Or you might consider the idea that bad things are just stuff that happens when an agressive species competes for limited resources in an unpredictable environment, and that god and satan have nothing to do with it. You could even try Pastafarianism on a 30-day free trial! If you are not satisfied, your god will probably take you back. Although, from what you said, I’m not sure that that would be a good idea for you.

I don’t hate god- I love the FSM! (he’s very tasty) I just find it a bit silly to completely believe a STORY that was passed along by word of mouth for several hundred years before it was finally written down, then translated and retranslated, copied over and over (no copy machines or computers back then!) and accepted as absolute truth. I’m sure that no errors occurred during the time the story was being passed along and everything is JUST as it was initially.

There is just as much proof for the existence of any god as there is for the existence of the FSM. That is the whole point any argument against the existence of the FSM can equally be turned against christian, jewish or moslim faiths.
We humans have a very important survival trait, we believe what our parents tell us at a young age and make what we have been told central to our beings. Thus we learn that tigers will eat you, fire will burn you, water will drown you, roads are dangerous and hundreds of other important things without ever having to test them. Fabulous.
Unfortunately this trait is abused and we have in our societies racists, sexists, religious fundamentalists and people who are scared to walk on the cracks in pavements.
You have faith that a candle will burn your finger. You can easily test your faith and have it proved.
You have faith that if you meet a hungry tiger it will eat you. This one is also easily proved however the proof is fatal.
Your faith in which ever god you chose to follow likely comes from exactly the same nurturing influences. Your belief is as strong as your belief that you will die if you jump off a tall building but you have no proof, nothing, not a shred of evidence. Generation after generation have been passing on the delusion of religion and in so doing giving control of their societies to religious leaders.
The results: the crusades, the holocaust, the 11th of Sept 2001, rich TV evangelists, suicide bombers and now the attack on inquiring science by the intelligent design movement.
Please wake up and challenge your own beliefs and above all have fun doing it.

Primitive beings tried to explain natural phenomena that they found frightening…..thus began the concepts of supernatural beings. We would have long ago discarded such irrational ideas, but for the cultural and familial influences that demanded we follow the traditions, oftentimes with torture and even death if we strayed!! Thanks for the reply its good to know people actually read these posts rather than just posting flames.
I have never put my hand in a running blender, I don’t know anyone who has and I don’t think I have ever heard of anyone who has. I have faith / I believe that putting my hand in a running blender would be a bad thing. Please substitute the word belief for faith in my previous post, it means the same thing to me.
I have made chicken soup using a blender logical thinking leads me to the theory that my hand would undergo the same process in the blender as the chicken bits. This theory seems sound to me and I presently have no plans to prove it. I am however willing to entertain arguments & accept new evidence on the subject.
I presently believe that there is no god in the same way that I believe that hands and blenders do not go well together, that means that I will happily accept any deity whose existence can be proved.
The fact that many people believe in something does not make it so. That puts gods in the same box as big foot, UFOs, the tooth fairy & the easter bunny.
Books written by believers no matter how old they are are simply documents of what people believe they are not proof.
Give me one conclusive piece of evidence & I will happily change my theory/belief/faith.

Christianity started at the beginning of time? Well, I don’t know. I wasn’t there (if there even was a beginning). And, most likely, neither were you. Besides which, it couldn’t be older than that Jesus guy. Does that mean that time began a little over 2000 years ago? Other than that, if you have enough free time to read all of this crap, you should really get a life. I hear that volunteer and charity work can be quite fulfilling.

I’m afraid your facts are a little off.
To start simply, and then work your way back, I believe I should suggest you look up the background behind Judaism. When Jesus Christ was born, some believed him to be the son of God, and others did not. Those who did not were the Jewish, those who believed it became the Catholics. The Catholics later diverged into other groups, Luthernism, Antibaptism, and many more — the protestants. Because of this diverging tree, “Christianity” is now a loose term including all of the aforementioned groups aside from the jews. Basically all religions that believe in Jesus Christ. In modern days the word has been mistaken as a term purely for the protestants, which it is not.
So as you can see from that miniature history lesson, the branches and intricaces of “Christianity” and what was created first is not so clear cut as you suggest.
A major goal of the Catholic Church (The first true “christian” religion) was often to convert other religions. If Christianity is so common and the first created, I fail to see why the Catholics would have to enter the primitive countries on their missions to convert. Modern scientific evidence has found that the human race most likely began in Africa. Africans didn’t even know about Jesus Christ, and therefore Christianity, until the Spanish Inquisition and other such of the like. Neither did they know about Judaism until the incidents of Moses in Egypt. Why? Because these religions were not yet created. Judaism is based on the principle of Moses as the first prophet, Christianity is based on the principle of Jesus Christ as the second. People couldn’t foresee that someone would be born in exactly that year in that exact place, to become a great prophet, giving oh such orders from God. It doesn’t work that way. For a religion to be founded, the historical events around it and the specific geography must be found. It is impossibe for that religion to start simultaniously everywhere.
To suggest simularity between christianity and all other religions is ludacris. Christianity’s teachings are very different from that of the Hindus for example. Or the Greeks. Greek myth is extremely differential in story than Christian myth. A perfect example might be the Druids, who originally thought there was a female god who had several different faces — the crone, the goddess, and one other that escapes my memory, hah. Probably something relating to war. In any case, when the Christian religion was being spread to Druidic land, the missionaries often focused on the concept of trinity and these three faces to convince the druids. One of the first parts of the converting process was to spread more sexist idealogy in the community, changing the druidic Goddess to a God, from a mother to a father, to put it lightly. This created a further parallel to Christianity. Another tactic Christians often used was the creation or movement of holidays to simular times that other groups had them, to ease that group into the culture of Christianity. Halloween, a traditionally Christian holiday, was actually created to mimick a Druidic holiday celebrating the harvest in November. The holiday was christianized and moved to a time that the Druids were more used to, and several druidic traditions were incorporated. Such behavior can also be seen with Christmas in December. We all know that December 25th is not the day Jesus was born. However, the holiday is celebrated on that date in another tool used for christinization.
Not to say that all converting curtesy of the Christians was done in such passive techniques! The term “St. Patrick drove all the snakes out of Ireland” refers to the brutal slaughter of many celtic tribes that the catholic St. Patrick conquered and/or converted in his paths through Ireland. Quite a lovely ditch of information also exists regaurding the Spanish Inquistion.
The point of that whole bit, in any case, was to show you that perhaps many of the parallels you are seeing between Christianity and other religions is not quite how you think it is. Christian doctrine and folklore was changed frequently in the converting process to allow for a better “matchup” with adverseries. It was actually a remarkable tactic, politically. Successfully converting a country to a religion that your own people share is brilliant. It creates a common thread in the people, and lowers the chances of revolt and discontent in the conquered territory.
Lastly, I’d like to address your statement that the bible is historically correct. I’m not nearly enough of a history buff to explain this one quite so well but I would like to point out that the Bible has many scientific, aristotlean errors in its pages. That fact in itself makes me mistrust the words and stories it writes down as history. The bible contained multiple references and support of geocentrisism, the idea that the earth is at the center of the universe while all other stars, planets, the moon, and the sun float in orbit around it, as heaven floats high above. Calendars were very confused and made very little sense under this theory. As every young student knows, geocentrisism is a false belief. Heliocentrisism, first hypothesized by Copernicus, is a far more accurate theory. The sun is the center of gravity in our universe, pulling all other particles in orbit around it. Copernicus published this theory on his deathbed. Later, when Galileo proved and published this theory, he was punished for heresy.
With so many other comments, I’m sure my arguments have already been stated and further explained, so i think i’ll end here.

1: God does exist. We can’t prove this, but we can’t disprove it either, so for the sake of argument, let’s just assume he does.
2: God, according to his scriptures, answers all prayers that are directed to him in his name. However, these prayers are not granted any more often than would be expected if events were occurring by chance. When humans act for themselves, on the other hand, the odds of things coming out in their favors increases dramatically. Therefore, God is not only not all-powerful, he isn’t even as powerful as you.
3: According to his actions in the Bible (during which he apparently still had powers), God is morally inferior to almost everybody alive today, since ALMOST everyone alive today is not guilty of dozens of acts of genocide.
Congratulations, poster! The odds are overwhelmingly good that you are physically and morally superior to God.

Christianity has NOT been around since the beginning of time. Just about 2000 years. Stupid people believe that the Earth is 6000 years old. If you are an evangelist, there’s 4000 years missing. Of course, you people are stupid and thus suck at math. If there’s 100 million stars, (which there are much more) and theres an average of .01 planets on them, and there is suitable living conditions on .00000001 of them, then every .00000001 stars there will be life on them. This is just the stars we can see from the earth. Multiply that by infinity. There are infinite amounts of life. If .0000001 percent of that life is sentient, then it is still infinity. If 100% of that infinity believes that earth is the only planet and that it is 6000 years old and god exists, I will still not believe.
