Uh…

I honestly can’t tell if this is an actual religion or someone screwing around on the internet… If it’s the latter, you need to check into a psych ward.

Originally, I too wondered how genuine this religion is. I was tempted to believe that it was merely a satirical parody of other religions with the aim of exposing the stupidity of intelligent design.
But as soon as I recognised the truth, that this was exactly what the Spaghetti Monster wanted me to believe, He revealed himself to me in all His sauciness. May His noody appendage touch you too Katarina, may He free you from unknowledge.

Aahr, the psych ward! Good times, good memories. Full-sheets, thorizine, electroconvulsive therapy….good times. Met me first pirate there, at least….that’s what he told me…. He did have a lot to say on the subject of religion (and an eye-patch). In fact everyone in the loony bin had some opinion on the subject, even the staff. None of them ever once mentioned our lord of Semolina, the Savory Savior, the one and only Flying Spaghetti Monster. I wonder what that could mean.

The real issue with the fundamentalists in our society is not their willful ignorance and/or denial of the prevailing scientific theories regarding the age of the universe, the origins of humanity, the validity of geology, etc. Nor is it their insistence that everything in a certain 2000+ year old anthology is literally true down to the last detail. Nor is it their determination to cling to certain outdated codes of conduct with regard to sexual and personal mores. Neither is it their dogmatic insistence that theirs is the only path to spiritual enlightenment and the rewards of an afterlife.

No, the real problem with these people lies in their attempt to reshape the identity of every nation in which they are active to create a sociey where all citizens, regardless of what they personally believe, must, as a matter of law, live their lives AS IF the belief system of these people is indisputably true.

That is why they want to pack the US Supreme court with Scalia clones–so the court can reverse its already decided (“Stari Decisis” for you latin scholars) rulings regarding Abortion, Prayer in Public Schools, etc. If we let them have their way, America will be a measurably different, less free nation–and it will only take one more supreme court justice!

It is here that the great fault line lies in American society. We have a determined, intolerant, cotrolling religious minority (roughly around 33%) who wish to impose their moral code on all the rest of us, and they are not too particular how they do it. They are more than willing to go in through the back door to force the same kind of changes on our society through the agency of the Supreme Court that the Warren Court forced on our society in the 1950’s through decisions such as “Brown vs. the Arkansas Board of Education”. The great irony of this is that if it occurs, it will be because moderate independent voters (through sheer ignorance) will have signed off on another Republican president because they believe a Hillary or an Obama will create too many radical changes in our society.

But if the Republicans succeed you can expect to see a supreme court which will create an inalienable “right to life” for all fetuses, mandate Christian prayer and “values” instruction in all pubic schools, outlaw homosexual conduct as criminal, ban gay marriage, declare anything more explicit than Penthouse obscene, allow large displays of the ten commandments in all public buildings, ok covenant marriages, et al.

Moreover such a court will not stop there. There exists a prevailing theory among the Radical Right that all government regulation since the advent of Teddy Roosevelt represents an unconstitutional “taking” of propery from businesses and individuals. It is called the property rights movement and it stipulates that if the US govement in its statutes ranging from the Sherman Anti-Trust Act, through OSHA, the Clean Air Act, mandates a business through governmental regulation do or perform some action which will lead that business to incur an expense, government can only so mandate if IT picks up the tab (pays the business to perform the act). If such a decision ever came down from a Roberts led court, it would effectively end the government’s power to protect the interests of the people through regulating the conduct of business. Conservatives call this “restoring the constitution in exile, and they never, never talk about it during election time. But it is one of the chief aims of every “conservative” presidential and congressional candidate. If it happens, the quality of life for ordinary people who are already severely oppressed by corporate power will plummet like a rock. Don’t say you weren’t warned.

Katarina… so what makes a “real” religion? Is there some criteria which one has to meet in order to be a real religion as opposed to a fake religion? Would members of the other religions of the world agree to your criteria and more importantly how would others see your religion if the same criteria was applied against your religion?

It’s hard to believe that there are people who don’t see the irony (or the purpose) of the FSM. To take your religion (and by extension, yourself) to be so important and so righteous certainly borders upon the sin of pride, and has historically led to mass oppression, forced conversions and the Holocaust. Christians, especially the evangelical fundies, like to think they “don’t do those things anymore,” but the mindset that allows for these things to happen is still firmly in place.

    Katarina,

Why would you feel it is necessary to inform us that we need to go to the psych ward…you Christians are the ones who are cannibals and like bodies and blood as an early Sunday snack. I accept you for what you are.

Perhaps I am misunderstanding the meaning of your post, but it seems to me that you cannot accept that this is in fact a real church. Perhaps someone was just “mucking about” when they wrote the bible, but Christians have accepted that and the ten commandments as their code of what is right and wrong. Whatever happened to love thy neighbor?

Unlike you, at least I have the decency of being informed before I pass any judgment.

    Yours,

    Chris

p.s. It would seem that Members of the church of the flying spaghetti monster are a cut above the rest in terms of our intellect and views.

Okay. First of all, if it is a real religion, it’s really stupid to send its followers to the psych ward without knowing anything about it. I’m new, but I think that it’s a real religion to some and just an internet fad to others. Either way, it’s an interesting religion/hobby. The main idea is to respect other people’s views, or shut the hell up.

The poor dear girl says she ‘honestly’ can’t tell. I think we should suspend judgement on her judgementalism until it can be determined as to the cause of her inability to tell (honestly). Perhaps she has never been exposed to humour before…perhaps she is only six or seven…perhaps she has some form of intellectual repression imposed silently and invisibly upon her by his Noodliness in order to strengthen the resolve of the average Pastafarian and promote unity aboard ship…..one wonders…..honestly….

And Katarina, just so you understand…This is VERY real. We don’t go for any of that whacky-jacky stuff about walking on water and rising form the dead and turning water to wine, eating the saviors body (yuck! I’m Vegetarian…that is just so gross), burning oxen to please the nostrils of some raging lunatic all-mighty, wallowing in guilt, sheading tears of repentance, oozing misery, wearing blisters on the knees, acting out shows of kindness and charity under penalty of eternal damnation…and so on. I’m tellin’ ya’ there are some genuine whackos out there who will believe ANYTHING! But FSM is different. For one (s)he is real. Very real. And for another thing, I need only ‘know’ that FSM’s meatballs are actually Neat-Balls of braised tofu and buttered pumpernickle crumbs with a shake of grated parmasan and a rasp of fresh horseradish and it is so. It is simply so. Thank FSM.

How ridiculous. Obviously people commit certain actions for a certain purpose.

Why don’t people stop and think first about why the Pastafarian community “is”, before trying to bash us and force religions onto people with ludicrous evidence from the Bible, that could have easily been created by some lunatic who had an extremely unrealistic imagination.

An elaborate spoof on Intelligent Design, The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is neither too elaborate nor too spoofy to succeed in nailing the fallacies of ID. It's even wackier than Jonathan Swift's suggestion that the Irish eat their children as a way to keep them from being a burden, and it may offend just as many people, but Henderson, described elsewhere as a 25-year-old "out-of-work physics major," puts satire to the same serious use that Swift did. Oh, yes, it is very funny. -- Scientific American
