As a moderate Christian pastor

As a moderate Christian pastor, I’m afraid I can’t join your religion, but I certainly appreciate its goals. Let it be known that not all Christians are goober-heads and some do believe in more of a live and let live philosophy. I figure that if all religions kind of kept it to “Love God (as you understand God), love your neighbor, and share what you have,” we’d all be better off. Any way, thanks to the FSM prophet for the peace offering.

You, good sir, are the kind of Christian we love around here, and would welcome you with open arms should you choose to become closer to the noodly one.

    Gold?

    Dread Pirate David,

How can you promote things that are often demonstrably false and call yourself “moderate?” -Fizzmick

And thank you, Father, for your kind words. Peace (whatever form it may take) be with you.

    Fizzmick,

Read the post carefully - Divid does not mention a single thing that he teaches that is “demonstrably false”, so you shouldn’t assume anything. I know people who call themselves moderate Christians who, indeed, only advocate ideas from the bible that are supported by evidence (such as the golden rule - if you want the evidence in favor of this idea do a google search on “evolutionary psychology social exchange”) or can neither be proved nor disproved with science (such as the existence of god - or FSM if you prefer). David was showing his respect for us by making no mean-spirited assumptions about our motives - please give him the same courtesy. I know the term “Christian” can be inflammatory to people who have been attacked by people using that title, but responding aggressively whenever that word appears will only serve to make enemies out of people who could have been friends. May the FSM be with you, and RAmen.

I feel warm and fuzzy with this one. It’s a gust of fresh air, the rose between the thorns. Thank you sir, I hope you return to read these comments.

    Dread Pirate Dave,
If all Christians were like you the heavens would open up with spicy meatballs and delicious pasta raining down on all the happy people on Earth in a time of glorious peace. Please preach your ways to your fellow Christians (and of course FSM). It is refreshing to see a Christian as yourself not bashing us!
Live long and eat lots of pasta! RAmen!

Interesting…Im not sure how to respond. Dave seems to be both educated & lucid which is something you rarely encounter from xtian contributors. You sir, are commended for your rationale but a moderate you are not. Sadly most of your brethren would consider your stance radical indeed.

Fizzmick, there is nothing demonstrably false about “Love God (as you understand God), love your neighbor, and share what you have.” People are entitled to any beliefs they want. As long as nobody forces their beliefs on others or tries to present them as science, we can all get along, atheists, monotheists (including Pastafarians), polytheists and other theists.

Really, the world needs more people like Dread Pirate David.

Yes, he I like this Christian as well. He did not threaten to eat my god, and he did not call me gay. I wish the world had more fundies like him.

Some people say moderate, others might say ‘nonbeliever’ or ‘infidel.’ The sad reality is that there are a lot of people out there who DO push their beliefs on others. Any why wouldn’t they? They know the Truth, and it’s their role to either spread the word or to kill those who have heard and rejected it.

I have to agree with Sam Harris, that on some level moderates form a layer of protection between (those who don’t believe) and the wackos. As long as unquestioning belief (faith) is taught as a virtue instead of honest and open thought, then these wackos will always have an audience.

… With that said, thanks for stopping by. It’s always nice to hear from someone who is both competent and literate.

i undertand that most christians aren’t like the vile hate-spewing hypocrites that post on our site. most of the christians i know don’t engage me in religious conversations because they respect that i have different beliefs. but it seems that we don’t often receive emails from kind and tolerant christians like you, but are always defending ourselves against those i mentioned previously. it gets tiring after a while, so emails such as yours are much appreciated. thank you and RAmen!

Peace to you, Pastor, and thanks for not being a goober-head. I love that expression.

Purchase the Gospel

An elaborate spoof on Intelligent Design, The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is neither too elaborate nor too spoofy to succeed in nailing the fallacies of ID. It's even wackier than Jonathan Swift's suggestion that the Irish eat their children as a way to keep them from being a burden, and it may offend just as many people, but Henderson, described elsewhere as a 25-year-old "out-of-work physics major," puts satire to the same serious use that Swift did.
