hmm…

HMM….

This website (as the writers probably intended) has commenters with a wide range of views on life and “religion.” Some claim openmindedness, others bash Christianity for, well, anything.

Please do not consider it a heresy to your conglomerate that a Christian that believes in Intelligent Design is commenting on your site, but I have some things to say about us:

Christianity is not a just a way of thinking or living or a “religion.” We do not picture God as flying somewhere overhead, watching our every move, waiting to punish us. He does watch our every move, but He acts with justice and mercy, and most of all, agape (love).

He is not just something to “get us through” life, though he certianly does that. For many of us, He is WHY we get through life doing what we do, not just HOW. He is there when we need help, but that is not His purpose. However, our purpose in life is to worship Him (he needs no help). I suppose there is no way y’all can understand unless you’re on this side of the fence.

He said it all with, “Christianity is not a just a way of thinking or living or a ‘religion.’” It is indeed not just.

Just curious, but last time you needed HIM what exactly did he DO?

And what is it with the Christians always being pejorative about FSM? “We do not picture God as flying somewhere overhead”. What’s wrong with flying overhead? FSM does it and does it well. Also he’s invisible which is beyond cool, and he inspires a great meal. What could be better when times are down than having a cool invisible god and an awesome meal to look forward to?

You mean…like what’s in the bible? Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t he kind of…ummm…flood the entire planet killing everyone?

    And another thing:

“However, our purpose in life is to worship Him (he needs no help).” How do you know that, on either count? Hmmm? Read it somewhere? Someone told you?

And one more thing: Have you ever asked yourself why Life has to have a Purpose. Or even why life has to have a purpose? We can (and probably should) give our own individual lives the purpose that makes the most sense to us, individually; nothing wrong with that. So if you want to have Worshiping Him as your life’s purpose, go right ahead, just don’t ram it down anyone else’s throat and expect (far less demand) that others do the same. I don’t think Life has a Grand Purpose at all. And that makes everything very different and Much More Exciting. I’m sure the FSM would concur.

Yes, but that was just because he was unhappy with his creation, like Homer Simpson when he couldn’t make the grill and went all mental on it!

You seem to know much about God, however, and that is what is really disturbing. Maybe the idea that you make of God is not the one we think, but you still admit its existence without even a single doubt, which I think is skipping the first step.
    .
You think that we are here because of God and to worship him, but one may think that God is here because of us needing to worship him. This point of view has the advantage to explain why so many nations think that they found THE single God.
    .
Sincerly, because the FSM do not really care if I worship him or not, thanks to his noodly Glory.

That’s kind of sad. God is /why/ you get through life? Don’t you have anything else worth living for?

A couple of things re all the above:

So the Christian God has created the whole observable universe and the incredibly complex bioweb of planet earth, including extremophile (look it up) organisms, just so that a specific form of primate can worship Him? Seems like a lot of work just to get your ego massaged.

Secondly, about this Meaning of Life thing. My understanding of the human mind is that it looks for patterns (again, check out the linguistics and neuroscience of it all - don’t take my word for it) to make sense of the external world. That way, the person can find food, shelter and a bit of tender loving care. This seeking for patterns has translated up to our highest cognitive reach and seeks patterns/meaning in the Universe, which then gets interpreted as religion.

Humanity’s tragedy is that it is a being that seeks meaning in a meaningless universe. However, once we understand that, we can start making choices and life actually becomes fun and infinitely more precious.

    Human love to you all

    .
I can understand that. He most likely isn’t anywhere anyway.
Don’t be surprised if we do picture our Deity *we like that word better* as flying overhead. After all; he IS the FLYING Spaghetti Monster.

I do sympathize. Baylor is the university where christian revisionist ‘historian’ Rodney Stark works. I’ve read a small bit of his work. Boy, oh boy. I would recommend not to ever take his courses as electives.

God must be the most insecure being in all of literature.
He created beings for the pure purpose of worshiping him.
He passed laws saying that his creation can worship only him.
And he enacts a quick and brutal vengence on anyone who dares not shower him with constant attention.
He’s like an attention craved two year old. “Pay attention to me! Pay attention to me or I’ll hurt you!”

You’re right, we can’t. Then again, we’re equally surprised you don’t understand our side of the fence either. Could it be…Confirmation Bias???

What I cannot understand is how the worshipping of a bunch of very imperfect humans would affect in any way an infinitely intelligent being. I understand therefore even less why such an infinitely intelligent being would have bothered to create a universe, which would take so many million years to achieve those imperfect humans.

i don’t know who originally said this but i like it (the following is paraphrased): “religious debates are little more than arguments over who has the best imaginary friend”. and what’s with current presidential candidate huckabee’s campaign commercials saying (another paraphrase) “i count on my religion to tell me what to believe so i don’t have to wake up every morning wondering what to think”…whatever became of reason and personal responsibility? separation of church and state continues to be of supreme (pardon the pun) importance.

I understand this is a concerned mail, but I feel bad it’s been put in a bad light with all the other hate-mails. Is it possible to somehow put this honest (though rather confusing to some of us, including me) to a more friendlier section of this web page?

Purchase the Gospel

An elaborate spoof on Intelligent Design, The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is neither too elaborate nor too spoofy to succeed in nailing the fallacies of ID. It's even wackier than Jonathan Swift's suggestion that the Irish eat their children as a way to keep them from being a burden, and it may offend just as many people, but Henderson, described elsewhere as a 25-year-old "out-of-work physics major," puts satire to the same serious use that Swift did. Oh, yes, it is very funny. -- Scientific American
