CBS reports a lady was escorted off a public bus after reading the bible too loudly.
Lutz, a Seventh Day Adventist, and her children were on their way to church.
Lutz claims the driver told her it wasn’t the time or place to read the bible. “I said, ‘Oh, but it’s the perfect time and the perfect place since it is our Sabbath and it is the time with the Lord and therefore I’m going to continue.’ And I continued,” Lutz said.
A supervisor was called in, she refused to quiet down, and was escorted off the bus. She now claims she was being persecuted for her beliefs.
You can read about it here.
A note to the Bus Lady: That’s not persecution. Persecution would have been if the rest of the bus was full of Muslim and Hindu passengers, all reading their religious texts loudly, and you - and only you - were kicked off the bus for reading aloud from your Christian Bible. What happened is that you were being rude and insensitive to the other passengers, wanted special treatment, and were rejected.

You got pwned.
Wow never thought this would ever happen…….
Gold?
I tell ya, if they want so badly to imagine that anyone who disagrees with ANYTHING NO MATTER HOW WACKY, ILLEGAL, RUDE, STUPID, OR IN AND OF ITSELF PERSECUTING OTHERS that they do is persecuting them, I say let’s start building a Colosseum and buying some lions now.
Dear Lutz.
.
.
YOU GOT OWNED.
.
.
Kind regards, Eruptions.
RAmen to that
Christian jackass
Maybe I should COOK a spaghetti dinner on the bus and hope to get kicked off.
Oh woman…
.
You are as dumb as you look…prosecution…prosecution is what you do to me
“What happened is that you were being rude and insensitive to the other passengers, wanted special treatment, and were rejected”
Right on.
Gold.
Doesn’t persecution mean punishment for a crime?
I think you may have interpreted the word incorrectly, bobby.
[that would be prosecution, ollie. -bobby]
Maybe it’s my lack of knowledge of Shakespeare’s tongue, but I do feel like a difference between “kicked off bus” and “escorted off the bus”.
.
Anyway, if all people began to read out loud, sing, dance, pray, whatever on the buses, subways and trains, they could also start to accuse each other of disturbing one’s concentration. Don’t the Seventh Day Adventists have proper places for a chat with their deity? Chapels, churches, cathedral, basi… oops, that’s my old RC background playing up…
.
Pastafarians could start cooking pasta on the bus. Which would probably go unnoticed in countries such as China and India, where the complete everyday tasks continue when using public transport anyway.
Wow…I have never been a first poster before…I should use this opportunity to say something profound and thoughtful about this woman reading the bible on the bus…
“Ha! Ha! Now you have to walk to Church!”
…Okay not so profound. But really, what is it with religious crazies that makes them feel the need to makes some large public display of faith?
Just a couple weeks ago I just so happened to run into some Mormon family friends in the Seattle Tacoma Airport, seeing we both had extended layovers we decided to grab some dinner at a restaurant. When our food arrived, what do my Mormon friends do? They all bow their heads and start to pray loudly. Everyone in our area started to stare and glare in annoyance, but because of the whole table having their eyes closed, everyone chose me to glare at. All I could do was look apologetic and mouth the words “sorry”.
What’s wrong with these people?!
Hahahahah, nice. I would have never had the meatballs to go up to a person reading the bible too loudly and tell them to stop. I’d be afraid of getting stabbed. All the more power to the bus driver.
@Cap’n Ollie. Oh My FSM! your freaking reply came with an answer from prophet Bobby…and it was a correction..
It’s bad enough to be rude and stupid, but please don’t be rude and stupid and try to justify it.
now if only the same idea could apply to public places……
(and before people quote the American constitution I live in the U.K)
I’d like to know just how loudly are we talking here? About a casual talking level or was she using her outside voice? Or maybe the inbetween I’m talking louder than necessary but it’s not quite yelling voice.
I feel sorry for the kids. May his noodly appendage touch them all!
RAmen.
Maybe she’ll spend a lot of money on her court case before it gets dismissed. We could all go stand in her front yard and read the bible loudly through a megaphone for several hours while she’s trying to sleep, and see if she persecutes us.
If she can make the point that she was discriminated against for her beliefs, then we, as Pastafarians, can eat pasta on the bus. But even further than that, we have a right, nay, a responsibility, to display for everyone the glory of pasta and it’s wondrous interactions with our taste buds. So on the bus, eat pasta, me maties! And let’s chew with our mouths open!
I can’t believe I’m related to these people.
haha
thats note persecution, its an idiot reading to loud, it makes no difference if its a bible or moby dick for fsm’s sake
Fuck…I read prosecution instead of persecution…
.
I am such a dyslexic….
I don’t know what her bus was like, but on the ones around here you have to speak up pretty loudly if you want anyone besides the person right next to you to hear. If the driver could make out the words she was saying despite the general hubub and noise of the bus ride, there is no doubt in my mind that she must have been loud to the point of rudeness.
Pam…..persecution.
Lutz… rhymes with Putz… nuff said.
Arrrghmen
Maybe she should have read the sign on the bus and/or listened to the bus driver’s instructions. It’s their bus, they have the right to kick your ass off if they feel like it.
.
RAmen
So, let me get this straight. If “Crazy Guy” starts shouting about how the government/devil/little pixies are controlling him through the fluoride in the water, and he gets escorted off the bus, that is defending the public safety, right? Cause I just want to make sure we are all on the same page here…
Lets not poke fun at her, my fellow scallywags! Yarr
She has not yet been touched by His divine noodle and has not read the wonderful 8 Condiments!
I believe a Pastafarian would know better. If only one of us could have been on the bus with her to read to her from our holy book!
RAmen!
That’s what she gets.
Honestly, I don’t mind if someone is reading on a bus or anything, Bible or not.
But if they want to read it WAY TOO FREAKING LOUD THEN IT BECOMES RUDE.
If she would have been quieter, there probably wouldn’t have been a problem.
she’d probably do better in nyc….if she wants to be considered a screaming religious nut on the subway.
Ha. The moment they cancel out all christian propaganda be the moment I stop wearing my Deicide shirt.
win.rar
ill bring my pasta maker on the bus, and start crankin’ out some linguini as soon as i can
Boo, hoo….
Now I know what that sign on the front of the bus that says “Hail Bus Driver” really means!!
.
Dogmatists (or anyone for that matter) who take advantage of captive audiences really piss me off. Good on you driver.
.
St John the Blasphemist
Saint of Hail Damage
The original article I saw on this (MyFox/Dallas - Ft Worth, 12/21/07) included this quote:
.
Lutz said the next thing she knew, the bus had pulled over and she was being escorted into a supervisor’s van, which then took her and her family to church.
.
So, not only did she disregard the request to reduce her volume, she got a what amounted to a free taxi ride, direct to her place of worship. She was not put off the bus at the next stop, which would be the usual option with someone causing a disturbance. Yep, she and her kids suffered terribly. I bet everyone else on the bus would have liked a private, chauffeured drive — direct to their destinations — for the price of a bus ticket. Also from the 12/31 article:
.
But the Liberty Legal Institute, which has fought many legal battles over religious issues, said The T is out of line.
“I’m extremely shocked that a bus driver would pull over and take time out of his busy schedule in order to kick off a lady and her two kids while they’re trying to read the Bible on their way to church,” said Hiram Sasser of the Liberty Legal Institute. “They should be ashamed of that.”
Lutz said all she is looking for is an apology. She said in her mind, what happened this past weekend was religious persecution, and she refuses to go along for the ride.
.
Oh, yay. Liberty Legal is getting involved. That shows real potential Christian charity to the people who need to take public transportation (not generally counted as a revenue stream in the US). Would Liberty Legal be as quick to stand up for the rights of, say, a Muslim escorted off the bus for reading loudly from the Q’uran? I think not. For any *other* non-Christianist reading loudly from a religious text? No. Someone declaiming the US Constitution would be similarly asked to keep it down. As would anyone attempting to foist political views or materials on other passengers. As would someone exercising their ‘right’ to loud and/or obnoxious music. As would someone who appeared to be ‘off their meds’.
.
The rule is posted clearly and serves the same purpose on Public Transportation as your dad’s did when he enforced volume levels in the family car. Loud voices agitate the other passengers and distract the driver. Mrs. Lutz, the word ‘discrimination’ has two meanings. One is to behave with unfounded prejudice. The second is to show good judgment. Crack open another book once in awhile and you’ll be better off, regardless of your religious convictions.
“What happened is that you were being rude and insensitive to the other passengers, wanted special treatment, and were rejected.”
Very well said - a lot of people could learn from this.
This saddens me. Many of the Christians who are quick to cry about how they are victims of religious persecution are the same Christians that are quick to judge, dismiss, or stifle other religious and non-religious groups. She was a disturbance and the driver was correct in kicking her off. If I was preaching loudly about how we evolved from pirates I’m sure I would have been kicked off as well.
She looks like she should be on the special bus.

I can’t believe I’m related to these people.
*
Not much longer seeing as how we are evolving and they are not :)
Oh, and its probably just me :)) But first time I read her name as Lurtz… Which is the name of an Uruk-Hai in the Lord of the Rings from Tolkien :))))) He’s better looking by the way.
Why is it that the people who have gone and killed people in the name of their religion (Crusades and Holocaust), tortured others because they suspected without proof that those people have not fully converted and are still practicing Judaism (Spanish Inquisition), and elected a man to the White House that was a complete and utter idiot who started an illegal and unjust war (ummm, if you don’t know who I am referring too, you need to watch the news every once in a while), why is it that these people are the ones who ask for special treatment? I mean, all of the examples above were not just special treatment, they were tyranny against minorities. And now this woman who I agree with Pluto that she should be in the Twinkie Bus as kids at my old school called it (when they didn’t call it the Retard Racer) wants to read the Bible aloud in an annoying manner in a public bus. Why can’t she just read it SILENTLY!?! Geez.
SORRY.
Prosecution.
Don’t hate me.
And, by the way, it was humbling to receive a correction from the prophet.
I think the same thing would have happened if she were reading Green Eggs and Ham to her children like that.
Finally… I grew up in a Christian home, and my pastor father and mother always felt the need to pray before every meal, and read the bible out loud everywhere we went. At last, I can show them the error of their ways!!
.
My you all be blessed by His Noodly Appendage!
@Pluto - Special bus…you mean it should be blue and have white chairs…like the special parking spots?
.
@Cap’n Ollie - I still remember the days when you were just Ollie…hahahahaha Persecution….god dammit…Persecution…
She was conducting a religious service in a public space. Let her do this at home or at her church. That’s where her behavior belongs. She’s rude, arrogant, and under the misapprehension that everyone on the bus is interested in what she has to say and/or is looking to be converted. She has no respect for anyone’s rights but her own. She deserved to be taken off the bus. Creating a noisy disturbance in a public place–for any reason, except to warn of a safety hazard–is unacceptable. This is not a case of religious persecution! But watch out, folks! Huckabee’s victory in Iowa will probably embolden Lutz and her ilk.
Wonder if Huckabee will support her right to prosteletyze in public places. This looks like an Elian Gonzolezish defining momemt for guys like Huck Hound of J.C. and Mormon Boy. Bet the republican candidates will fall all over themselves to get a photo opportunity with her, probably on the campus of either Bob Jones or Liberty university.
Reading the Bible in a public Bus is offending other people. Try repeting this in IRAN och Saudi-Arabia, and guess how many seconds you would be alive after the first word. I guess 120-300 seconds maximum, but you where happy to live in a Free country. Take care of your country by respecting other people - or we end up like Muslims.
The biggest cry from the Christian religion extremists all round at present seems to be *persecution*. I think this may be related to the fact that all those nasty *evilutionist* science people are increasingly “ganging up” (:) to oppose teaching creationism as science. Not to mention all those *nasty* atheists coming out of the closet!
.
Is it possible that this womens actions were an intentional bait? Or have I just been dealing with too many scheming and dishonest fundamentalists lately? They do appear to be getting more and more desperate. Maybe something to do with the looming US elections?
Anyway….
Hail to the busdriver :)
RAmen
Lady, if they can kick a two-year off a plane for saying “Bye-bye plane,” too loudly, they can kick you off the bus for reading your bible too loudly.
Someone needs to learn to read things other than bibles.
Lolz i would be realy angry if some1 reads from a book out loud in puplic.
What is i want to read that book myself?
Now, if she’d been reading from the Gospel of the FSM, things may have turned out differently…..
I’m glad the bus driver didn’t put up with the subtle preaching.
I hope she learnt the lesson…. if not, then i have some advise for the next driver:
DO NOT pull over and throw her off the bus… DO IT AT SPEED!!!
solves several problems in one go :)
I *heart* Barrack Obama! I know it has nothing to do with this, but now is just as good a time as any to proclaim my loyalty to him! RAmen to all!
@Pacific Pam: somthin’ funny about when I wasn’t a pirate captain?
People who follow the religion that has done more persecution than any on the planet in the history of man, is now claiming persecution all over the place (only they claim persecution whenever THEY are trying to be pushy and preach their crap to people who don’t want to be preached to, which isn’t persecution, it’s called the 1st amendment, I have a right to not be orally crapped all over)… Can you imagine what Galileo, and DaVinci, and Copernicus would have been able to accomplish in their lives… I mean they forever changed science and the way we view the world, however, they were doing their work in secret under persecution from the church, because let’s face it, most religions require absolute denial of science (which explains why they are trying to change the meaning of the word “science”).
I imagine if I was doing the loud Buddhist meditation (which I don’t do, I prefer the quiet one) on the buss involving very guttural chanting, I would probably be kicked of the bus as well.
I’m just wondering how loud she was preaching. Because if she was yelling the contents of the bible at the top of her lungs, I agree in throwing her off the bus, but if she was just reading the bible to her children…
Probably was the first option.
@Etay & capidosia
RAmen to that.
Pfft, Wouldn’t have happened here.
As a whole, especialy london, were very self-contained. If someone was reading the bible loud, we simply wouldn’t care. If they started reading to others they would either be, threatened (and not lightly) or beaten up.
Ok so assuming it did, judge wouldnt care. I’m always pleased to live where it is the opposite end of the church and state affair… still seperate but we have a church of england that used to run the country… we got sick of it and now people like this women are treated like what they are: attention seeking freaks.
For the love of FSM tho, dont let the merger of church and state happen. When we did it was called the dark ages. It sucked, as you would imagin.
she was obviously looking for a fight the bus had a sign that prohibited loudness this kind of shit shouldn’t make it to the news~(oo)~
I say, if she wins the suit, a few of us who practice Tantra, should get on a public bus and practice OUR beliefs in public, or maybe some Wiccans can practice some powerful sex rituals on a bus… then when we get thrown off, we can claim we are being oppressed as well. Just because you believe it, doesn’t mean other people should be forced to watch it.. The Jews have very specific rituals for slaughtering animals, that doesn’t give them the right to bring a cow into a public place, bless it, the cut it’s throat for all to see (and Honestly, I find that much less offensive than someone preaching the bible too close to me, due to the number of humans that are killed because of that book).
When DC was passing (clearly anti-gay) sodomy laws, a huge group of straight couples (over 1000) marched up and demanded to be arrested for it. It worked pretty well.
@fish– unless she’s one of those people who gets started reading the bible and then gets all crazy with The Spirit. I don’t know if you’ve had the great pleasure of witnessing The Spirit, but, when we were in high school, a friend of mine did all the videography for his PENTECOSTAL church…. those were some loony birds, I tell you. They go absolutely bat-shit insane for The Jesus. Besides, the article said they enforce that rule if other passengers complain or if it’s distracting to the driver.
.
That being said, let us all take a lesson from our christian counterpart and martyr ourselves aboard public transit vessels, as well! I have a few ideas: the first of which being to throw noodles at the passengers; the second is to dress in Pirate Regalia, board the bus in some dramatic manner, steal all the booty and take the wenches captive! ARRRR!!!!
This would have to be on a FRIDAY (our Holy Day), of course. Then, when we get kicked off (which we WILL), we can say it was due to unfair religious persecution.
.
Who’s with me?
I think we need a fellow Pastafarian who lives in Denver to ride a bus and read from our Gospel too loudly to see what happens.
.
If our Pastafarian brother/sister is also thrown off the bus, then her claim is pretty much dead in the water.
Okay..the above (or below) post was from me.
My
Argh! Again!
Noodly appendages galore are messing with me!

I don’t normally get interested in American politics (we have our own) but I just came across this….

“STOP HOUSE RESOLUTION 888 ! WHAT IS H. RES 888 ? WHAT WILL IT DO ?”
“Introduced by Congressman Randy Forbes December 18 in the US House Of Representatives, H. Res 888 claims to be about “”Affirming the rich spiritual and religious history of our Nation’s founding and subsequent history and expressing support for designation of the first week in May as `American Religious History Week’ for the appreciation of and education on America’s history of religious faith.”
.
“Actually, the resolution is packed with lies - American history lies to be specific. The preceding link is to a story by Talk To Action contributor Chris Rodda, author of Liars For Jesus: The Religious Right’s Alternate Version Of American History, and Rodda painstakingly debunks a number of the myriad American history lies to be found in Randy Forbes’s House Resolution 888.”

That frightens the sh*t out of me ….and I’m an Aussie…. and Australia is a fairly secular country.
Why does it scare me? It’s the idea of the religious right extremists getting there fingers forever closer to any of *those* big red buttons! Any buttons at all! Brrr….
Also will *stuff* like this make it easier for the ID sales conmen to get their pseudo science into schools?

Oh shit, here we go again with the revisionist history rewriting. The Democratic takeover of both houses on Congress in 2006 was supposed to have fixed this crap. But nope, not nearly good enough. The item Nikkiee flagged up comes just after another one of these stinkers just passed:

hah what an artard
@Pacific Pam- “@Pluto - Special bus…you mean it should be blue and have white chairs…like the special parking spots?”
Yep that’s the one. Could do with straps like an over sized child seat to stop her hurting herself.
.
Personally I think she was being discriminated against. I believe, that in the spirit of fairness’ there should be a representative of every religion on every bus reading from their own holy book as loudly as they can. Think of how good that would sound!
that would leave like one spot per bus left for the public and what about all other means of transportation? cars, ferries, airplanes, pirateships, bikes, spaceshuttles, canoes, rollerblades, tractors. It would require a lot of religios people on reading duty, might not be that fun either
@ Ande - it’s not supposed to be fun, it’s a sacred duty.
about that resolution 888 (ironicly its the beasts (666 hahah) older brother) but yes she should lose, its not discrimination its being fair, no one is allowed to do that, its just a quick money grab, and pirates dont rob booty and steal wenches, that was all christion smear because they were pastafarians also, i am very glad i am canadian
I think this lady might havea a point. Well, depending on HOW loud she was reading. If she ws just reading to her kids and people take offense, then more power to her. If she was actually trying to deliver a homily to cleanse the sins of the bus, then it’s a different story. I don’t complain to the driver when I am subjected to listening to some 13 year old girl’s highly important conversation about her poignant thoughts on Justn Timberlake. But then again, he is pretty dreamy.
Hail to the bus driver, bus driver, bus driver, hail to the bus driver, bus driver man. His meatballs truly are huge. Ramen to him. Lady I’m sorry for you to had to have found out the hard way, but the rules apply to EVERYONE! I’m tired of the arrogance that some christians have these days.
What is hilarious about these people? Everything. If I started preaching on a bus, I would be kicked off, too. In fact, maybe we should conduct a few experiments. Maybe we should have a national convention and take public buses there, and preach on the way. Actually, let’s just have a convention.
@Becca-
Or we could all get jobs as bus drivers and preach wile we drive. You can’t kick the driver off the bus, it won’t go anywhere!
I think if she gets that money, I am going to sue her for ticking me off. I would say that if someone did this near me on the bus, I’d say, “Yeah, I’m a big fan of Fiction too.” I don’t mean to tick anyone off, but seriously, most religious faiths that read from the Bible are stuck up. I’m fine with anyone being any religion, so long as it doesn’t hurt anything and you don’t force me to join.
Preaching should be left at home and churches don’t bring that mess on mass public transportation. If the driver can’t concentrate on their driving due to distraction in the background, it would be respectful of the nutty person or people to shut up and allow the driver to do their job. Had the bus crashed due to the crazy lady’s high volume reading who was going to take responsibly or take the blame for the whole thing? I rather insure safety with minimal disturbance than tons of it coming from a loud reader. Reading the bible wasn’ likely the issue it was how freaking loud the woman was. The only reason why this crap got attention was because it’s America’s beloved religion other than that it would have been settled in no time.
Ya’ll all messed up
–”This was definitely a clear cut case of persecution,” Lutz said.–
I couldn’t read the article without smirking… I kept seeing Lutz as ‘Lulz’ (aka, alternative to ‘lol’). Living in the ‘bible belt’ myself.. Lets just say I’m just glad it wasn’t my state. Raised a southern Baptist.. lets just say I have a bit of sympathy for the Christians who don’t impose, threaten, bother others with religion. I feel embarrassed for them, so to speak.
The reason why there are rules such as “dont play your music too loudly” or “have headphones with MP3 players” are posted on buses, are to NOT let noises distract the driver. If she is offending or distracting other people/the driver, then she needs to get kicked off. I’m sure if some Muslim or Jew or some other religious person was reading from the karan or whatever it is they worship, she would have gladly escorted them off the bus. This is a lady desperate for attention and just being plain old stupid. Yet another disgrace to America
I attend a black southern baptist church just for the music ;) I also got kicked out of a “wildlife party for middleschoolers” (Evangelical propaganda) for wearing a t-shirt. And saying Clapton was god.
Man, I feel sorry for her kids.
Being somewhat familiar with Adventist teachings (my parents’ religion of choice during my childhood), her reaction doesn’t surprise me. Adventist doctrine practically mandates the belief that the world is out to get them. In short, they think they’re the chosen people, instead of pirates, which is clearly absurd. They still hold onto the belief that a Catholic Pope will be the antichrist, and that the United States is the beast of Revelations. (By the way, does Pastafarianism admit of an antipasta?) They go even further, in that it’s not good enough in their system to believe in Jesus and be good and all that stuff…at some point, you have to decide whether or not you’ll show the ultimate level of devotion and not work or do anything un-Jesuslike on Saturday (not Friday, for FSM’s sake), which is, in their view, the most important of all of God’s commandments. At some point, the faithful will not be allowed to buy or sell unless they break this rule and worship on Sunday (again, not Friday!) I presume this means they won’t be able to partake of pasta during this tribulation. Personally, I’m glad this happened to her. The ridiculous beliefs and assertions of those who would force their beliefs on others, as she was clearly doing, should be held up for public scrutiny. If ridicule follows, tough.
I agree completely with penpen15….
It’s unlikely that this type of seriously flaw in logic happens too often, but it does seem that some people think that anything even vaguely relating to their religion where somebody else does something they don’t like is “religious persecution”. All I can do is shake my head.
@ Robc
- “I kept seeing Lutz as ‘Lulz’”
So did I. I was so surprised, I actually did a double-take.
I wonder if she would claim the same thing if she read the bible loudly in the library.
Its incredible something like that could reach
the news… that woman, has no respect for anyone, disturbing
them, disrespecting the rules, making fun of the people who
really has been persecuted…
Im from Chile, a great sudamerican country, in which never
has happened things alike… USA really freaks me out, with all
of those religion fanatics…
Im a cientist myself, and a atheist too, i fear for my life, those
god creepies would really kill me just because i have what they lack
so much… critical thinking…
Its so fearful, so much hate, so much anger… how religious people
can be so agressive ?, if god really did exist, they would go straight to
hell…
That would be really dumd… its a library she would not have a reazon to read out loud… then again….
i think she should have been asked to read more quitely because there is no need to force veiws apon people
wheres the bus driver how come he doesnt tell his side of the story, oh ya it would make a christian look bad, we cant have that can we. people like that are the reason the ice caps are melting.
RAmen.
Why was she reading it out loud anyway? Fine, read it silently by all means, but I don’t see why you’d WANT to read out loud at all, let alone loudly enough to get kicked off.
Did anyone investigate her for a psychological disorder.Often a single individuals behavior is taken to far and a whole church is for condemend for their beliefs.
