Why knock god

Okay, so I know you’re probably not even going to read this, but I had to express myself.
First, a bit of my religious background. I was raised a Baptist, slowly came to realize that I didn’t believe a word the Bible says, and became Wiccan for two years. Then I had a “long dark night of the soul,” more commonly known as existential crisis, during the course of which I became agnostic. However, my closest friends are two devoted Catholics, an atheist, and another Wiccan. I do not make fun of or demean their beliefs, and they do not make fun of or demean me. None of us attempt to convert anyone, although we are willing to share information if asked for it. I am not sure what I think about the Kansas School Board issue, as it concerns the definition of science as well as faith, but I do know that even if I do not agree with some of my friends, I would never tell them they are being illogical.
Recently at my college, a spoken word artist performed. He was also agnostic, and one poem he wrote in particular spoke to me. He compared God to Diet Coke, saying that Diet Coke helps him get through the hard times in the same way that God helps others. So why take that away from people? The majority of Christians aren’t hurting anyone, are they? If their beliefs help them get through their lives without the despair I feel everyday due to my doubts, why ridicule them for it?
If you have actually read all this, thank you for your time. A reply, if you have time to write one, would be appreciated, but you do not have permission to repost my words anywhere.
Sincerely,
Z.E.

Even better still…perhaps you’d like to drop it off over on this blog yourself :)
An IDiot, who is not only crying fowl on Dover ruling, but also stressing the *vast* differences between creationism and ID, and is adamant ID is not inherently religious :p) The Wedge Document has been quoted a number of times already :))

the religious right isnt hurting anyone? how about the first lady announcing we are only 5 years behind the rest of the world on stem cell research during the 2004 elections? and then commenting there is no proof anything will come of stem cell research? separation of church and state was put in the constitution for this very reason. im sorry but anyone who believes the bible is all inclusive is too brainwashed to be taken seriously in important matters. the continued existence of life on this planet hangs in the balance. besides the fact that each religion has twisted the bible to suit their own agenda. councils meet every few years to rewrite the inconvenient parts so they can further their agenda. this book was originally written in hebrew which has no vowels. tell me they got it 100% right. these people will hold us back to keep their profits up. most religion is big business and they will take any necessary steps to keep the money rolling in. a few more things: slavery, the crusades, olympic park bombing, the stealing of america from the native americans. all helped along or directly caused by good religious folks like those on the kansas school board.

“When was the last time you saw an atheist:
    Blow up a building?
    Hijack a plane?
    Start a holy war?

Faith doesn’t make you a good person.”

I agree, but would like to take it a bit further. When was the last time you heard of one of the 10 million followers of Our Lord FSM doing any of these horrible things? His message of love is strong and heals us.

Thank you all for your comments. I would like to clear up a few points. First, you should know that I didn’t read all of your responses, although I am planning to. It’s past midnight now, and I have to get up at six, so I don’t really have the time at the moment.
Second, I didn’t mean to imply that no one would care what I think, woe-unto-me, by saying no one would read it. I just figured something as popular as this site seems to be would get a lot of mail, and not all of it would be read by the site owner, let alone posted.
Third, I thank all the helpful people who pointed out to me that mocking religion really isn’t what this site is about. However, I still maintain that the language in some places seems condescending.
Fourth, I don’t tell my friends that they are being illogical because not all of them value logic. I realize that seems silly, but it is another of their personal beliefs that I respect.
Finally, I did ask that this not be posted, but as it seems to have sparked an intelligent discussion, I don’t mind so much. Oh, and thanks to all of you who made the Diet Coke jokes. I do realize it’s an odd analogy.

XD That didn’t work well for him.

    Thankyou.
Honestly, while I was going through this hate mail nad read yours, I was kind of shocked. I would just like to say thanks on the behalf of all my fellow Pastafarians, first of all, for your overall politeness, which we hardly get, and also for your well thoughtout opinions. Y

sorry, I accidently pushed “Enter”. Well, what I was trying to say was thanks so much for being so polite, you definetly took the high road on that one. But I would just like to say that when you said most Christians don’t do any harm, I think you were wrong. I have many Christian friends and they’re amazing, but others are constantly shoving their beliefs in my face, telling me I’m stupid or I’ll burn in hell. And that’s really terrible. Religion isn’t a win or lose thing, you know?
so yes, Xians CAN do a lot of harm. Thanks, if you read this.

Just wanna throw out that Diet Coke has splenda, which recent studies have shown to increase the risk of cancer. But then again, wouldn’t God have to be the one to create cancer. So who’s the bigger asshole, God or Diet Coke? That’s why I drink regular coke with my spaghetti and meatballs.

i agree peope belive wha they want to i mean iv went through a few religions myself at one stage i was a satanist but now i have realised my true calling but why is each religion so angry? our lord says he does not care what other people belive so let them belive what they want aslong as it doesnt involve hurting others that isnt right and just a note although this started as satire it is now a proper religion but is still seen as a joke, why? we will compare what is so strange about a flying spaghetti monster that isnt strandge about a red guy with horn hooves and a goatee o a big man with a beard who sits in the cloads? so yeh just get along.

    Hello,
Z.E. you sound like a very reasonable person, and although we are saying that thier religion is illogical, we are doing it because they are bashing us and taking away our rights, such as the right laid out by the establishment clause. The separation of church and state. They can worshop god as much as they want, they can worship anything, so long as they don’t restrict our freedoms and rights, in order to force their religious views on an unwilling public. Thank you for your mild mannered letter, I don’t even think I could call this hate mail.
    J.T.S.
P.S. Our god promotes peace above all.

ZE listen. christians are hurting America by continuing with this religion nonsense — just like every other religion. Already Europe is begining to get beyond stupid shit like religion. THere a many more athiests (yes athiests, not agnostics) there then here. Remember, Persia was once the most advanced and powerfull empire on earth. Today, we call it Iran. What happened? They fell from power because the people there could not get beyond their stupid ass religion and childish tribalism.

America will probably fall the same way because of christians, so yes, they are hurting someone, our decendants.

And if you are agnostic, then you do believe in at least one thing the bible says… the bible says there is a god. You took that one idea with you when you left that backward religion. I am glad you are at least agnostic, but unless you are a true athiest, and don’t even let in the possiability that god created man… then you took an idea from religion. Don’t deny it.

Purchase the Gospel

An elaborate spoof on Intelligent Design, The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is neither too elaborate nor too spoofy to succeed in nailing the fallacies of ID. It's even wackier than Jonathan Swift's suggestion that the Irish eat their children as a way to keep them from being a burden, and it may offend just as many people, but Henderson, described elsewhere as a 25-year-old "out-of-work physics major," puts satire to the same serious use that Swift did. Oh, yes, it is very funny. -- Scientific American
