Statue resemblance

buddhist.jpg

I took this picture in Thailand a few days ago. Does anyone else thing there is a resemblance between this statue and the FSM? With the many arms, etc. Also, another similarity: both Pastafarianism and Buddhism are peaceful religions. And.. there were a lot of pirates in this area years ago. Coincidences?

    Avalokitesvara, a thousand armed diety maybe? Putting 1,000 arms on a statue may be difficult

    Welcome to the CoFSM and well done on grabbing this thread first.
    How long have you been lurking before posting? I wonder if Bobby should open a ‘Lurkers, come out!’ thread sometime. How long had everyone here been lurking before posting? I wonder how large our quiet audience is. Getting them out might increase the community a good deal.

    Is that a meatball - second arm from the top on the right of the photo? Is this a depiction of the FSM self-immolating? The horror!

    What are the things in the statue’s hands?

    The waters near Thailand STILL have a large population of pirates (2nd only to the Horn of Africa), except they really don’t dress in traditional garb. Perhaps this accounts for the relative peace in Thailand?

    Of course, it could also be that the Thais, besides peaceful Buddhists, are pretty serious bad-asses. It’s the only nation in the area that was never colonized or conquered, and they are famous throughout history for having “big smiles and long knives”.

    @Dutch Pasta Guy,
    In response to your inquiry, it was almost two years from when I was first introduced the website to the time when I posted first. However, for most of that time I visited the website infrequently. I really only lurked the forums for the last 5 months of that span before I wanted to post as well.

Purchase the Gospel

An elaborate spoof on Intelligent Design, The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is neither too elaborate nor too spoofy to succeed in nailing the fallacies of ID. It's even wackier than Jonathan Swift's suggestion that the Irish eat their children as a way to keep them from being a burden, and it may offend just as many people, but Henderson, described elsewhere as a 25-year-old "out-of-work physics major," puts satire to the same serious use that Swift did. Oh, yes, it is very funny. -- Scientific American
