Why pick Christians?

Published September 15th, 2007 by Bobby Henderson

Why pick Christians? Are Christians the only ones who actually push their beliefs onto others? I consider myself a Christian, but in no way am I a devote Christian. I do not believe in the bible, but think that the stories overall are more of guidelines by how to lead a life in which you are happy and are able to help others. I do think that it is “outdated” in a way. I believe in evolution and science and am not ignorant to solid, evident proof. I do hate it when “atheists” bash other religions, and they usually target Christianity. There are Muslims who die for their god and Jews who also try to spread their beliefs. I recently started going to college and have realized that there is one Christian club, but there are many more Jewish organizations, despite the fact that they are an apparent minority. This e-mail is just my expression that even though Christians DO try to push their beliefs onto others, there are other religions who do the same. And also, it’s not Christians in general. Christianity is the main trunk but the branches are the ones who have different views. I am Roman Catholic and I don’t think that we are the ones converting others even though we are still Christina. I know Mormons try to convert people but they are only one branch of Christianity. There may be different branches that do the same but as a whole, not all Christians are asshats who try to convert others.

Christianity takes up at least 33% of the religious population. It’s the most prominent religion in the world.

PS; I like your word, “asshat.”

    :O
    First post~!

This not related to the post really… I have an FSM question, but I didn’t know where else to ask it. I wholeheartedly agree with the ideas and messages behind the FSM religion. But I really want to know, and please take no offense, if you are supposed to believe that there is actually a flying spaghetti monster that created the world. That, I don’t believe. I do, however, agree with the ideas behind it, and I love and want to forever follow the I’d really rather you didn’ts.

  4. Nospoon says:

Oh yeah, it’s quite important to us that you, you personally, actually do believe that there is a flying spaghetti monster.

And it’s not christianity that was targeted, it was the Kansas school board. That the stupid thing it was doing was being done in the name of pushing christianity wasn’t our fault.

    @Nospoon
So I can’t be a part of this if I don’t actually believe in the FSM, but I support the movement. (don’t push your religion on people, anit-hypocrisy, ID doesn’t belong in classrooms,…, etc.)

I do not believe in the bible,

Then how can you be a Xtian? The only proof we have of Christ that I know of is the Bible. If you don’t believe in the bible, you can’t believe in Christ hence you can’t be a Christian.

I do hate it when “atheists” bash other religions

I don’t know what “atheists” do, but technically atheists can’t bash other religions because atheism is not a religion

there is one Christian club, but there are many more Jewish organizations, despite the fact that they are an apparent minority

Try because they are the minority. If you want to meet a bunch of Xtians all you have to do is go to McDonalds.

I am Roman Catholic and I don’t think that we are the ones converting others

Ever heard of the Crusades? the Inquisition?

not all Christians are asshats who try to convert others.

Not all Christians are asshats that try to convert people, but every asshat that’s tried to convert me has been a Christian.

L0ve, he’s kidding, our religion will accept anyone…. Loose guidelines. I myself believe in Loki and Dionysus, however I am also a quite practicing pastafarian, spreading the gospel of the FSM (He who has created the trees and midgets). So, whatever your faith is, try pastafarianism and if you don’t like it after 30 days we’re quite sure your old religion would take you back.

In response to the “concerned citizen”, it’s not really the Muslims or the Jews or the Buddhists pushing to make ID accepted in the classrooms over the overwhelming evidence supporting evolution, it’s the Christians in the US. Therefore, Christianity is the most reasonable target. If this were an event concerning something in Iran, it’d probably target Islam. However, the source of the webpage and the creator, I assure you, would be kept hidden for safety reasons ^^; Isn’t there a hit out on a new Scandinavian cartoonist again? Not dutch this time, I think.

    @ Marcin S:
First off, I must correct you on a technicality. The Jewish religion actually considers trying to convert nonbelievers to be an unacceptable practice. Jewish Rabbis, both historically and in the present, even teach that people who seek to convert to Judaism on their own should be discouraged from doing so.
    .
As for your main comment about how Christianity is not the only offender, I must agree. Other religions proselytize and evangelize as well. However, implicit in your claim is that Christianity IS an offender, even if it is not necessarily the worst. By making your argument, you have said that it is acceptable to partake in behaviors you agree are ethically abhorrent as long as other parties also practice them. I don’t think that you would champion that opinion if you took your thoughts to the next level. If half of your neighbors were murderers, I assume you would still believe murder to be repugnant, and you would have the integrity and conscience to abstain from slaying your fellow humans.
    .
You have also shown yourself as an example of an improved Christian. Although I do consider you far more enlightened and reasonable than your fellow Christians, I must stop and examine the facts. You have said that you do not blindly believe in the bible. You consider your dogma outdated by the discoveries of science. You are, in short, a Christian without faith in many of the central tenets of Christianity.
    .
I must agree that it is perhaps cruel of this website to single out Christians for verbal attack, but only insofar as we have been negligent in our duty to debate with the other faiths that treat us with contempt and adore the inculcation of children and weak-minded adults with ideas that are believed but not known.
