Familiar reflection

Years ago, I took this photo on my seattle vacation.

I had no idea I would capture more than just a part of the skyline, and I couldn’t even figure out WHAT EXACTLY I photographed.

You’ve opened my eyes – Thank you so much!

It’s that great big freakin star sitting on our door step! Nope so sorry, the ocean gives off more than we could ever hope to. The next major contributor down the food chain are the vulcanoes. People are at the bottom of the barrel giving off enough to make no diff at all. The whole global warming thing is a political/economic swindle. We have to take all that money we are uselessly spending on global warming and start doing some serious work to protect and preserve our environment. Gotta go drink grog and eat carbs, a hungry pirate makes a crabby pirate.

@ Black Stash – RAmen to you and your wench!!! My hubby has wanted a windmill for ages and ages…but since he lives by the philosophy that “anything worth doing is worth overdoing” the one he wants costs $10,000! Home grown crops are so much better for you! Hubby grew up as the youngest of 9 on a farm with home-grown cows and a one-acre vegetable garden. He became a computer geek so he wouldn’t have to work that hard outside (he likes good climate control!) but we both recognize the importance of self-suffiency.

I gave one of my jolly roger bikinis to one of my teen-aged riding students. It was too small for me (I did trial and error on ordering!) and I see no reason not to teach her how to be a sexy wench early in life! I actually went from Rowdy Wench to Rowdier Wench (by becoming the “Empress of Thong”) to Rowdiest Wench by having me and my student wash and wax my truck in our bikinis and taking photos…all in the valiant attempt to combat global warming! :))))

    If you want to know why we are the ones responsible for the majority of the CO2 increase see here;

    http://www.realclimate.org/index.php?p=87

As using isotopic analysis of atmospheric CO2 it is possible to calculate the proportions that come from different sources. As well as analysing over time using, for example, tree rings and coral, to extend the analysis into the past.

As to volcanoes, while individual volcanic eruptions can have an effect on the climate, this is more usually one of cooling rather than warming due to the quantities of SO2 produced compared to the amount of CO2. There are exceptions to this such as the Laki, Iceland volcano in 1783-1784, but they are the exceptions rather than the norm. The average annual volcanic release of carbon is about 0.15 Gt/year of carbon, compared to about 7 Gt/year of human related sources, i.e. volcanoes are about a 50th of human sources.

There is plenty of useful information covering such aspects, as well as answers to the claim about of the suns effect, on the site linked to above.

    Ok Black Stash,
Just to get a few things straight- No, I’m not some idiot who buys into media crap. I actually took a course on environmental studies (though I admit it stupid of me to mispell it). Another thing. It’s not media crap. There is truth behind it. Have you ever heard of the Keeling curve? Do you even know who Keeling is? Well, in case you don’t know, Keeling did a study on the fluctuations of CO2 levels in the atmosphere in correlation with global mean temperature. Strangely, they were the same… Now, I know what you’re thinking. Who says that it’s our fault? Possibly it could be that never before in global history (traced back from records such as CO2 in ice samplings) have global temperatures been so high. I think I see why you might think I’m just some sheep following the media – it’s that whole Al Gore thing, and frankly, I’ve seen his film, An Inconvenient Truth, and found it quite terrible and inaccurate. He seems to think that melting glaciers are the main cause of sea level rise. They are, in fact, not. It is that water expands as it heats up. True, ice is less dense than water, but as the molecules of water gain more kinetic energy, they spread further apart as they move faster. In any case though, heating the planet only exacerbates things. Adding CO2 to the planet heats it. Us burning fossil fuels emits CO2 (along with many air pollutants which aren’t very good for us anyway).

  38. 38 - Stereotypical Environmentalist… - Jun 28th, 2007

    Oh, and Black Stash,
If you knew anything about CO2 emissions, you would know that the reason the ocean gives off CO2 is because as it heats up, CO2 becomes less soluble in it, therefore, any dissolved is released into the air, heating the earth more. It’s a positive feedback loop. I’m not trying to be rude or anything, by the way. I just feel rather insulted at your rash judgements. If this topic really compels you and you wish to learn more, take a course or even do a bit more research first.

Vague on the details now, was very interested at the time though.

Oh, I know that aerosols, which are released by planes, I believe, into the air do have a cooling effect. However, they are also air pollutants. Ultimately, if we wanted to stop global warming but didn’t care about our health, we would release massive amouts of aerosols into the air. Another useless method of which I have always been fond is removing the entire Ozone layer, because Ozone is actually a heat trapping gas.

I know the fundies always go on about “scam” though. Like JW will get their religion taught as science and they’ll support him that global warming isn’t a problem. Hey I just came from a religious chat room…it was fun…it was like poking a stick in a hornets nest. I was blocked after a half hour though. Shows that they don’t like people to ask questions about their contradictions in the bible. I was amazing to see adults trying to impress with vague and strange answers to direct questions.

I asked a question about two uncles. One story goes, an uncle will get a lot of money if his nephew dies. He goes over to the house finds the nephew alone in the tub. Holds the kids head under water until he dies.

The second story goes, the other uncle goes over to his nephew’s house and sees the boy slip and fall, hitting his head and falling into the water. He pauses…then lets the boy die.

Who is the worst of the two?

Uncle one is a willful murderer. Uncle two stands by and does nothing, but doesn’t actually cause the death, he just doesn’t do anything about it.

They did not get the point.

Then I asked, what is the difference between uncle two and god? God stands around doing his nails while all kinds of murder, rape and torture goes on and does nothing.

Someone said I was evil. Oh but it does my black heathen heart good.

Sorry Environmental guy I shouldn’t have brought it up…I know how the zealots are about these issues but there is no proof that CO2 is the main driver of global warming. As measured in ice cores dated over many thousands of years, CO2 levels move up and down AFTER the temperature has done so, and thus are the RESULT OF, NOT THE CAUSE of warming. Geological field work in recent sediments confirms this causal relationship. There is solid evidence that, as temperatures move up and down naturally and cyclically through solar radiation, orbital and galactic influences, the warming surface layers of the earth’s oceans expel more CO2 as a result.

There is probably no issue as misunderstood as Global Warming in the world. It is common these days to paint CO2 as a pollutant and all kinds of classes teach this these days. Much to my shame, I too taught it in some of my classes. CO2 is a naturally occuring gas in the air.

The media jumps on the story and runs with it, predicting catastrophe and scaring the bejesus out of everyone. It sure wouldn’t be much fun to tell everyone it’s gonna get a little warmer for awhile. You are also painted with the heresy brush if you dare to question the norm. That by the way goes against all of the ethics that us scientists work under. You have a theory…throw it to the wolves, if it comes back all chewed up and covered in spit, well maybe you should work harder on it. So when did it become okay to dis the non believer…especially when the non believer is basing their new theories on new (which by the way is old information) that calls bull to the Global Warming Scandal. Many scientists who actually participated and are quoted by the IPCC are flocking away in droves as they see that the theories are economic and politically motivated. Those people who dare to speak out against it are tarred and feathered.

By the way the anthropogenic emissions are only about 3% of the natural carbon cycle and less than 1% of the atmospheric reservoir of CO2 of 750 GT. The natural fluxtuations are so great that it is extremely difficult, even for the experts, to follow and predict that at this time it impossible to quantify the effects of man made CO2 released into the atmosphere. But there are a great many out there who doubt that it is even a factor.

So…just about done here…spend your time, money and efforts where they will really help. Recycle, reuse and reduce. That will help the planet so much more than chasing a comet…there ends my speech.

    @Black Stash
Interesting post just there. I don’t know too much about the machanisms of how CO2 is supposed to cause global warming. But I did spot a couple of serious errors in your post there.
    .
“As measured in ice cores dated over many thousands of years, CO2 levels move up and down AFTER the temperature has done so, and thus are the RESULT OF, NOT THE CAUSE of warming.”
    .
The first bit is definately not what happened the last few hundred years. Gas bubbles from ice cores show that the CO2 level have been between 180-360 ppm for almost an eternity. Then they started rising from the beginning of the 19th century, with the onset of the industrial revolution. The rising global temperature didn’t start before that, but only in the 20th century. So the rise in temperature came after the rise in CO2 levels.
Maybe your statement is true for natural fluctuations in the CO2 level in the past, I don’t know about that well enough. But currently the CO2 level is racing toward 500 ppm, almost one and a half time more than it has been during any natural fluctuation in the past. And the order of events (warming coming after CO2 rise during the last two centuries) very much contradicts what you say.

“Many scientists who actually participated and are quoted by the IPCC are flocking away in droves as they see that the theories are economic and politically motivated.”
    .
Now this is where your post really loses credibilty. The economic motives for not wanting to hear about global warming are clear. Just check out the website of the Competitive Entreprise Institute for instance, a ‘pro-CO2 emission’ thinktank that runs tv adds with phrases like “CO2 is the source of life on our planet. It helps plants grow.” Their website is at
    http://www.cei.org/
Their home page features such catchy phrases as “Advancing liberty – from the economy of ecology”
Are those sounding the alarm on global warming or the media overhyping it? If they are then they’re certainly not as guilty of making propaganda as those who say all is fine. And holding up those few scientists who dissent does sound all too familiar to Answers in Genesis holding up their 186 dentists etc. in support of their story. Sure, you’ll always find some people with PhDs to sign up to something. That doesn’t prove much.

“By the way the anthropogenic emissions are only about 3% of the natural carbon cycle and less than 1% of the atmospheric reservoir of CO2 of 750 GT. The natural fluxtuations are so great that it is extremely difficult, even for the experts, to follow and predict that at this time it impossible to quantify the effects of man made CO2 released into the atmosphere. But there are a great many out there who doubt that it is even a factor.”
    .
Absolute utter bull crap. CO2 levels throughout previous ages are well know as they easy to obtain from gas bubbles trapped in ice cores. Saying that we don’t know how strong our own influnce is is BS. We’ve increased CO2 levels to almost double what it was on average up to just a few centuries ago.
    .
“So…just about done here…spend your time, money and efforts where they will really help. Recycle, reuse and reduce. ”
    .
Well I’ll agree to that! Apart from the rising CO2 levels, oil and other resources are not infinite. So even it you don’t think CO2 is causing trouble it’s still a good thing to be economical with resources. No complaints there.
Btw, I’ll repeat that I know little about the science of how CO2 causes global warming (I do know the wide consensus of the scintific community on it). But that’s not the reason for rejecting most of your post. Just from what I do know about CO2 levels in the past I can see most of what you posted is BS. That does lend credibility to Wench Nikkiees suspicion that it’s a copy-paste from some group like CEI.
    .
And last practicality: when I copied your post I saw it had blank lines in them. That does help to make it more readable. Unfortunately the server cuts them out. Use a period instead to create a near-blank line.

Now, the Flying Spaghetti Monster is obviously not particualarly worried about global warming, or he would prevent it! And if you want to reduce global warming, you must become a fully fledged pirate! It is the only way forward.

An elaborate spoof on Intelligent Design, The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is neither too elaborate nor too spoofy to succeed in nailing the fallacies of ID. It's even wackier than Jonathan Swift's suggestion that the Irish eat their children as a way to keep them from being a burden, and it may offend just as many people, but Henderson, described elsewhere as a 25-year-old "out-of-work physics major," puts satire to the same serious use that Swift did. Oh, yes, it is very funny. -- Scientific American
