Global Warming, Pirates, and the Rise of the FSM

The Cincinnati Beacon notices a relationship between global warming and pirates.

General consciousness about global warming seems to have reached a new critical mass, perhaps thanks to Al Gore’s movie and the growing awareness of green technologies.

But has anyone noticed, while more people become aware of global warming and take steps to combat it, that our culture has become filled with even more pirates? Pirates, in many ways, are experiencing a renaissance in America right now.

Read it here.

There were a lot of pirates in the third movie. Johnny Depp was a pirate, Kiera Knightly was a pirate, Orlando Bloom was a pirate, Keith Richards was a pirate, Bill Nighy was a pirate, everyone was a pirate! That many actors dressed as pirates, we should have had a stripper factory appear out of nowhere.

    Also, first post.

The “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies have certainly done wonders in heightening the interest in pirates on this planet. Now if we could let all these people know that they will also be receiving fringe benefits (Friday holidays, the Beer Volcano, the Stripper Factory, etc.), global warming could disappear in a green flash! ;)

Hi, this is my first post here. My name is Shawn. I have just found this site from my friend who is doing an online ministry. He is a good man, retired Military, and wounded in combat in WW2 but still very active. I thought it would be good to ask people here what they really think of global warming. Science is good for many things but in this case there is no real proof that the Earth is not going through one of it’s normal warming phrases. Over the last 6000 years there has been slight gloabal temperature fluctuation, science has shown this. This Earth was created for us and I don’t believe that God would purposely try to sabotage His own work, because this would be contrary to everything He has told us. But I would like to hear your thoughts too on this. Perhaps if you are in doubt about anything I can help to point you in the direction of some answers.

    Hi Shawn,
I have to tell you that I do not believe in god. FSM maybe, god no. I by default do not believe he tells us anything, that was just a bunch of old men trying to set up some rules for a bronze-age tribal society.
And I think that a) yes the earth is going through fases and temperatures fluctuate. but b) humankind is making it worse by pollution and cutting down forests.
Which is dumb and not helping survival in the long run.

  30. 30 - realmenlovechrist - Jun 24th, 2007

Hi, Red Dutch Pasta Wench, have you read the Bible? Because it clearly states that the young and old chose of their own free will to follow the Lord Jesus Christ. The society of that time was not entirely tribal and there were many who were unhappy with the governments. When they found the Lord and lived by His wishes, they were able to be the founders of Christianity which is saving the world. I know that humans are causing pollution, this is very true, but God created the Earth to be a proper home for us and His work cannot be undone by the doings of mortals. This is why I believe that global warming is not the threat it is made out to be, I know some scientists see it that way but we are not privy to knowing the Lord’s work at all times, this is why we have faith.
    In Christ,
    Shawn

Yes, I’ve read it, it is a poor piece of fiction, with loads of propaganda mixed in. And I simply do not have faith in some kind of god, christ, whatever. I also do not believe they will save us from our own stupidity. Believing he will save you from global warming is daft and dangerous too, that way it is clearly no longer your responsibility. Very handy, but too easy a way out in my opinion.
    *
I chose to believe I am responsible formy own actions, if I screw up things will go wrong. There will be no deity (insert deity of choice) to save us and make things right, no matter how hard you might wish to.

Hey guys. I just read your posts on global warming. The whole issue of global warming is quite clear and not even religious. First of all, humans are definitely conrtibuting to global warming via mass combustion of fossil fuels increasing CO2 content in the atmosphere. Nearly anyone who knows anything about science at all can not argue with the fact that CO2 is, in fact a greenhouse gas, meaning, in simple terms, that the more of it there is, the warmer the earth will be. Also, CO2 is water soluble, moreso at lower temperatures. This means that the more CO2 we release into the atmosphere, the warmer it gets, and the warmer it gets, the more CO2 is released from the oceans into the atmosphere. Needless to say, if we don’t do something to stop this, we have a positive feedback loop of increasing temperatures on our hands, AKA a big problem.
Now, to tie into religion; In terms of Christianity, (and keep in mind that I am not a Christian), I hardly believe that any moral God of any kind would want to watch his/her own creation destroyed by another creation (like humans killing off coral reefs and arctic wildlife as a result of global warming). Also, I don’t that any God would want to see his/her own creation kill itself. For, not only does combustion of fossil fuel produce CO2, but also, it produces nitrous oxides which are primary air pollutants (need I say more).
In terms of the FSM, I believe that the correlation between pirates and global warming may be very correct, for in times when there were more pirates, people (like the pirates) traveled by sea, using wind-powered vessels. no true pirate would succumb to the combustion of fossil fuels, so therefore, increasing the number of pirates in the world would decrease fossil fuel combustion and decrease global warming.
I don’t mean to insult any religion, because I don’t think it really matters who believes in what. What does matter is imposing beliefs on others which is morally wrong. Also, insulting someone else’s religion is just cruel. I think we need to all band together, despite religion and do our part to combat fossil fuel combustion.

  39. 39 - realmenlovechrist - Jun 24th, 2007

Hi, Red Dutch Pasta Wench and the others who have answered to my posts. It is true that in many ways we are responsible for our own actions. We can choose to follow Christ’s teachings or we can sin, that is one example. But it is different entirely from the fact that God has a great plan for us and we do not always know what that plan will be. But we Christians do know that if we have faith and honor Christ’s teachings, we will not be destroyed on this planet or go to Hell. This is why I firmly believe that the global warming issue is not something that demands our attention. I am not stating that global warming is not happening at all, but I am saying that God has His reasons for what he does and He loves his children, so He is not about to doom them all to a weather-related death or one that comes out of the consequences of changing weather.

As for the Bible being fiction, I have heard other people say this before but the truth is, did you live 2000 years ago? No, and neither did I. To question God’s word when we were not there to prove or disprove it is blasphamous, in my opinion. Jesus and His Disciples were real, the Crucifixion and Resurection were real, so to say the Bible is fiction is like saying that Da Vinci did not paint the Mona Lisa. We were not there so how can we deny it? I hope this shows a little more clearly that the Bible is God’s word and is an actual account of the wonderful events that took place at that time.

    In Christ,
    Shawn

LONG, BORING, TECHNICAL POST @ RealMenLoveChristians
Seriously, it’s long. You have been warned.
    .
    .
    Hey RMLC… so you’re a young earth creationist huh? Well each to their own I suppose. However let me just sort a few points out;
    .
    1) The Earth is a far bit older than 6000 years old. Try 4.5 billion instead, and you’ll be a fair bit closer. The universe itself is quite a bit older still.
Now, we know this, beyond reasonable doubt, by a variety of ways. I myself am qualified in stating the earths age.
    Why?
    .
In the last 4 days, I have clocked up 40 hours of work on a large machine called the SHRIMP (Sensitive High mass Resolution Ion Micro-Probe), basically a giant mass spectrometer (think CSI). What I’ve been doing for those 40 hours is date rocks, of ages ranging from 450 million years to 2000 million years (that one was a standard, so we have very good understanding of its age and decay processes).
    .
The SHRIMP allows us to compare, with very high detail, the ratio of various lead, uranium and thorium ratios to determine the age of the rock. You see, there are four stable types of lead; one is common, non radiogenic lead, one comes from thorium decay, and the others come from the two isotopes of uranium. By comparing the ratio of any ONE radioisotope with its decay product, we can get an age. With three, we get a very good agreement on that age.
    .
Now, I’ve heard the argument that decay constants can supposedly change, which would through off the ratios. However, there is one problem with that. The SHRIMP has three ratios to measure. For the decay ratios to change to just the right degree for all three relationships to give the SAME AGE is a ridiculous assumption.
    .
The level of chance it would require, especially when decay ratios have never been observed to change (please be aware that even a tiny, infinitesmal shift would be detectable over the course of a couple of years) is so mind boggling remote that I would have a better chance of swimming to the US, picking a door at random, and finding you.
    .
Even if that wasn’t enough, the age calculated coincides well with the geological strata in which the rocks were found. Then there are also observations in other fields (eg astronomy, paleontology, archaeology, biology etc) that all also indicate ages of life, the universe and everything greater then that in the bible.
    .
Hence, the only possible way the earth/universe is 6000 years old, is if some god decided to change all the multitude of data, in a very precise way, to make it appear to look a lot older. Now, if that was the case, surely god would want you to believe the world is actually really really old?
    .
    .
    .
    2) Your basing your assumptions on a text that was not written at the same time as its subject matter. Scholars in the field give the bible being written over a century after the agreed time of Christ. How do they know what happened? None of them were there. Plus, a hundred years is a bloody long time for a story to twist and change.
    .
    .
    .
    3) The bible contains proven falsehoods and self contradictory statements. Just take a look at 1 Kings, 7:23 and 2 Chronicles 4:2, where apparently pi = 3 (it doesn’t, and if you know any basic geometry, you can prove so yourself), or, also in 2 chronicles, 6:36, apparently there is no man which sinneth not, despite several sinless individuals being mentioned in other books (1 John, 3:6/9, 5:18). (King James)
    .
So, if the bible is the infallible word of god, yet the bible is wrong, where does that leave god?
    .
    .
    4) There are other religions, many of which are older than the Abrahamic religions. Moreso, nowhere in the world did christianity arise spontaneously, other than the middle east. The only reason christianity is widespread, is because of the economically driven trade expansion by the western europeans, who brought their culture, and thus their religion, around the globe (something muslims, hindus and buddhists also achieved).
    .
    .
    .
Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying there is no god, just that it is highly unlikely the world is as the bible says it is. I would be perfectly willing to change my opinion if god gave us a sign (say someone parting the oceans. That’d be cool) that could not be otherwise explained. He did it back in the biblical times didn’t he? Why not now?
    .
However, while I’m waiting for that, I’m going to go out and enjoy my, if you’ll excuse the phrase, god-given gifts of observation and common sense and ignore the bollocks that is the bible.

RMLC- So, if teh Lord has a plan for us, and we don’t know what it is….then how do you know trying to stop (lessen) global warming ISN’T the plan? Maybe the big guy wants to see if we’re really willing to put any effort in to solve our own problems instead of handing them all off to them. Never mind what ‘the bible says’, if you’ve got a lot of scientific data telling you something (in this case about global warming), it might be worthwhile to listen, no?

Shawn, not being there 2000 years ago no more disqualifies someone from discounting the authenticity or accuracy of the bible than it does someone reading it today being able to say it is all true. In both cases you all you have to do is do some fact checking, list all internal inconsistencies, compare what the bible say to what other cultures of the time were saying, analyzing the literary style of the bible, and of course questioning the motives of the people who wrote it. Bible = not true because all evidence says so. FSM = true, because Pastafarians say so.

I believe that whoever is going to take responsibility and do something about global warming, regardless of religion, is right. Speaking of “right”, not to be rude, but technically, you should have said, “Whom do you think is right?”.

Hi again, I have read all your arguments and I can tell you are intelligent people to bring up all these facts. However there is one thing that I need to bring up myself, and that is that scientific facts are not always correct. Sometimes the method of determining data is faulty, and often just a mistake is made. So it is not correct to say that science has proved this or that fact, because sometimes science is right and sometimes it is wrong.
To the person called Jingles, I am very glad to see that you have read the Bible! This gives me hope. I want to say to you that the nature of the Bible is not to be taken 100% literally, because obviously we are in the 21st century and the Bible was written two thousand years ago. There are many metaphors that we need to apply to modern life. This is the beauty of God’s word, it is relevant now as it was then. I mean, obviously there were no TVs, computers, cars, etc. in Jesus’ time! So the meanings are to be interpreted metaphorically in many cases.
To the Iron gill Kidd, yes you are right, it is of course possible that God’s plan includes global warming. I am not disputing this, and I am not disputing global warming’s existance. I am only saying that God made this earth for us, we are God’s children, and if you have faith you can see that there is no way God will let us come to harm or destroy the earth. His plans are mighty and great!
I am not God, I cannot prove who wrote the Bible with scientific facts, but I know as a fact in my soul that this is God’s true word and that His son Jesus Christ died for me on the cross. Faith can be as strong as fact. I hope you will see that I am not trying to fight anyone here, but I say that if you have faith you can begin to see what I mean by all the words I’ve said.
    In Christ,
    Shawn

    Hi Shawn
“Sometimes the method of determining data is faulty, and often just a mistake is made.”
    .
You mean in an individual experiment or in ther overall process which involves repitition of the experiment by a number of peers, many of whom are often based in different countries, and thus have different political and religous beliefs?
    .
“So it is not correct to say that science has proved this or that fact, because sometimes science is right and sometimes it is wrong.”
    .
You make the scientific process sound like some sort of ad hoc hit or miss process! Not so! I suggest you make yourself a little more familiar with all the steps that make up the scientific process from observations to the formulation of a hypotheses, through to experimental design, then carrying out multiples of the same experiment, getting enough supporting peer reviews of experimental results (i.e. replication of the same experiment under the same conditions getting the same results) and finally getting your research passed through the scrutiny of science journal publishers to get it published in a reputable science journal.
    .
Yes, Science has on occassion gotten it wrong. However this is usually rectified quickly via intense peer reveiw and then publisher scrutiny.
The safety valve process that is peer review plus the scientific process in itself means that new ideas and possibities are continually researched and our understanding constantly updated.
    .
If you have evidence of where science has got it wrong and this has not subsequently been rectified, I’d love to see it :) Thanks.
    .
Now, upon discoveries of contradictions contained in that holey book….ummm…
    RAmen :)

    Hello Shawn!

I’ve been wondering something, but first I would like to pose a number of questions to you.
If you say others cannot know Jesus was not the Son of God because we were not there to see it, then how is it you can say for sure that he was? After all, you were not there to see it either.
Also, you acknowledge that the bible contains many metaphors, so how do you know which parts are metaphors and which are meant to be taken literally?
Couldn’t the miracles it claims Jesus performed have been metaphors?
I personally cannot prove weather god exists or does not, but while I don’t believe in a God, I do recognize the possibility that he may exist, just as the Bible describes.
You have said that science is not always correct and therefore cannot be completely trusted, but why can’t the same logic be applied to the Bible? Wasn’t the Bible (from the point of view of an Agnostic) originally just writing down observations of the world, and forming a hypothesis about how the world was created?
The original scientific theory of the universe?

This brings me back to my original thesis; I’m wondering if even though you believe in God with all your heart, even though you have not a shred of doubt that you are absolutely right, when you look at the matter impersonally, do you acknowledge the possibility that God might not exist, and that the Bible might be wrong?
Do you think that there is a possibility that the Bible was written by men who were just trying to understand the world around them? Is it possible?

Oh, and one more thing, you seem to be saying that fact scientific fact is meaningless because its wrong, and then you said that your faith was as strong as fact… seems a bit strange to me. Just a thought.

    Toodles,
    TheTriangle

    .
    .
Ahh but Shawn, herein lies my problem with religion. You yourself can see the bible is metaphor, and as such I trust you to ignore the vast majority of its teachings in an effort to be a civilised member of our society. Unfortunately, it is too much to hope that all of humanity can do the same.
    .
When you get down to it, both Yahweh and Jesus come across as rather vicious people (ex. think John 15:6, not very tolerant of other faiths… ) and the nature of the bible is such that it promotes and justifies their behaviour.
    .
While this is in itself not inherently bad, (though rather distasteful in my opinion), what it results in is propagation of the idea that this sort of behaviour is not only acceptable, but even desirable. This is a bad thing. A verrrrrry bad thing. This sort of approach has resulted in denominations such as the Westborough Baptists.
    .
It’s all very well to argue that it is metaphor and parable, but it doesn’t change the simple fact; the bible is about Yahweh and his followers doing bad things to people.
    .
Why? Because the bible said they were bad people.
The bible teaches a single opinion. If you fit the mould, that’s all well and good. Unfortunately, not everyone does. There are people that are born gay, or who do not believe in an invisible big brother. According to the bible, they should be killed (no ifs, no buts, just dead). Even if you do not take it to the admittedly extreme end as advocated, it still teaches you that there is something wrong with these people.
    .
So, you see, there’s the clincher.
    .
However you look at it, the bible preaches that one set of people is inferior to another. As long as people are taught by this book, this will continue (as an aside, I’m not saying no religion = no prejudice, but no religion would definitely result in less prejudice).
    .
If you really want to believe in a god, by all means go for it. However, as long as you use the bible to define your god, things will go horribly wrong.

Well, I just have to say that it is typical of people like Mr. Realmenlovechrist, to do the whole ‘read the bible, but realize that a lot of it is metaphors, but it still all pertains to todays values’ blah, blah, blah. Have you actually read your bible? I have. And I found that along with it being the most confused and contradictory piece of almost unreadable bull, it is also something as a christian I personally wouldn’t want my followers to actually read in case they realized how awful it and their god comes across as being. It is full of murder, rape, genocide, infanticide etc. all perpetrated by god himself. His instructions to his people are always about killing or shunning those who don’t believe or belong to his tribe…sect etc. The bible actually starts with Mr. God deciding that he likes Abel’s offerings but not Cain’s, causing Cain to be all pissed. Why? Why pit one brother against the other? Because even if you aren’t omnipotent and know all and see all, you would know that by doing something like that you are going to cause hard feeling between people…no matter how nice they are. So although Cain’s reaction, albight a little extreme, ends by killing his brother. This event would never have happened without god’s interference. (And what the hell does god need to have burnt offerings for anyway?) So Cain is exiled and ends up in the Land of Nod and gets married. Wait a minute, where did Nod come from? I thought Adam and Eve and offspring were the only people on the planet? So if that is correct, god has set up a situation where, if people want to get married they have to marry a relative, isn’t that incestual? Anyway…he gets kicked out and god tells him that because he killed his brother he is going to have to pay, at least seven times over for his sin. Oh and by the way, so do all his decendents. What? Even people without guidance from god don’t normally make the children pay for the deeds of their fathers. If you keep reading the bible it actually continues to get worse. The killing goes on and on, and all because god specifically told his followers to do that. “Raze this city and kill everyone, even the animals who live there…oh but keep all the gold and jewels for yourself.” Nice, real nice. Oh what a loving god this is…please don’t mind my sarcasm. So Realmen, if you are a supporter and proponent of christianity, I suggest that you go and take anger management courses, because the last thing this world needs is more people who are religious. And when I say religious, I mean any religion, I am not signalling out the christians. Most religions are xenophobes and would gladly scourge the world of all the other peoples who don’t believe and practice in whatever mythical, superstitious form of worship they have developed. Thank the FSM for all the atheists in the world…without us there would not be a sane person alive.

Shawn, there is no such thing as a scientific fact. Science works to explain the facts, it doesn’t create them.
    .
Here is the question I asked my Dad that he would not answer – “If you had been born in a non-Christian country, would you still be insisting that the non-Christian religion you grew up with was the true religion and would be inisiting that I go along with it, just as you are doing with Christianity?” Turns out he was born Catholic but that church shunned him because he was born out of wedlock, so the family became Lutheran.
    .
Anyway, the point was that people get their religion from their family and community, not by actually examining it and the alternatives.

A little joke to help make my point:
    .
A Jewish man moves into a strict Catholic neighborhood. Every Friday, the Catholics practically go crazy – because while they’re morosely eating only fish, the Jew is in his backyard barbecuing steaks. So, the Catholics work on the Jew to convert him.
    .
Finally, by long endurance, the Catholics succeed. They take the Jew to a priest who sprinkles holy water on the Jew and intones, “Born a Jew… Raised a Jew… Now a Catholic.”
    .
The Catholics are ecstatic. No more delicious but maddening smells every Friday evening! But come the following Friday, the scent of barbecue wafts through the neighborhood. The Catholics all rush to the Jew’s house to *remind* him of his new diet. They find him standing over the sizzling steak, knife in one hand, his other hand dipping in water. He sprinkles water over the meat, saying, “Born a cow… Raised a cow… Now a fish!”

Can you imagine what a peaceful paradise this planet would be if everyone just believed in doing good for the sake of being good? No jihads, no holy wars, no crusades, no inquisitions, no morphing poor little innocent children into people who only live a hairs breath from the Dark Ages. Hey Shawn.
I read your last post and was somewhat disturbed by one thing. You seem, yourself to be a brilliant person, however, it seems to me that you are afraid that something terrible will happen to you if you “lose faith” in God and that to take action would be to “lose faith” that God will save us all from any harm. This, however is a terrible misconception. I understand where you are coming from, in a way, but at the same time, you must realize that trying to do your part to prevent global warming could also be part of God’s plan. I am fairly sure that there is a Christian saying, “God helps those who help themselves”. I think that this phrase may be easily applied to this situation.

SE – There’s nothing wrong with insulting religion, or anything else for that matter, as long as the insult has merit. Some people think that religion is somehow different than all other social constructs and should be immune from criticism, parody, jokes, and various kinds of insults. Not so. Religious claims are just as subject to critical analysis and comment as, say, science. Being “faith-based” (willful ignorance) does not give religion an out. The argument that much of religion is unprovable and has to be taken on faith also doesn’t make religion immune to analysis and criticism of the disprovable, contradictory, and/or unsavory parts.
    .
I agree that being unnessecarily rude is not good. Just read the hate mail this site gets.
    .
Per Shawn’s post, I don’t think he was sincere in his questions and really wasn’t looking for and answer, but rather was looking down on us from his somewhat smug position founded on faith-based certainty, obviously oxymoron. He was trying to demonstrate his faith to us.

Mike Meier, I must praise you for speaking the truth. Right on brother! Why should we not look down on religion and all the bull that goes with it? Why should we show respect to people who have ‘faith’? Faith is a blind trust in something that isn’t real. It would be like me saying that I have put up a shrine to the easter bunny…wood nymph…Batman…Santa…the Pink Unicorn…or Bibo Baggins, and you must believe in the power, or else, (place dramatic scary music here) your hair will turn pink then turn into worms. Your clothes will become polyester and your nose hairs will become sentient.

Religion should not be exceptable or condoned. We should discourage it, not give it respect. It is evil and has caused unbelievable suffering and death in the world. It is an idea that is long overdue to be dumped along with all the other beliefs that mankind has had and held against its better judgement for too long. The world is no longer flat, nor the center of the universe and shouldn’t be held hostage by a bunch of maniacs who given the first oppertunity would be trying to burn anyone who does not believe what they do.

I think this site as well as others like it should encourage people to speak freely against the myths, the hypocrisy and the disaster that religion is. ANY KIND OF RELIGION…I can live without Allah, Jesus, Vishnu and even Odin. The only god we should be bellying up to is our Spaghetti man and his beer volcanos and stripper bars. So ahoy maties and R’Amen to all and to all a good night.

It’s just plain wrong, now move on. I think that most people sincerely believe that stuff not because they understand it, but that is what they were told and are either unwilling, unable, or afraid to think for themselves. On the other hand, there are plenty of other power-hungry folks that are milking and promoting these things for personal gain. Those people, and their minions, I have difficulty not looking down on. You are completely right about people being raised into religion and being afraid and such. That doesn’t mean that you need to look down on these people though. I, personally, pity them. For example, I can’t help but feel sorry for Shawn, who feels that if he “believes” and is wrong, there is no harm, but that if he doesn’t “believe” and is wrong, he will go straight to Hell and rot and burn there for all eternity. I guess people like that feel, “Better safe than sorry”. It’s just sad that they pay no head to how unsafe it is to live with the concept that nothing can ever go wrong. It’s a lot like why we don’t give 10-year olds vadka and put them behind the wheel of automobiles. One could argue that we should have faith that the the sloshed pre-teen will return from the drive, unscathed, because God will be there. However, we don’t do this because we know that it is unsafe. I don’t see how that logic can’t be applied to global warming. I mean, we’ve already tackled Ozone thinning by phasing out CFCs. Why can’t we save the planet again?

I’m sure his only aim is of confusing the issue in the minds of the largely unscientifically informed public as well to try and prevent any of the more inquisitive flock from straying! His mind is already made up rock solid and his questioning is merely a farce in an effort to sway (keep) readers to his religions world view!

Anyway next Wednesday night is last game and neither team has anything to lose…”should” be a great game. Thing is these days there is so much money in the weekly comp season that the coaches and players probably be too worried about injuries! Also for the international games! Still am hoping for some old “Origin magic”

Hi to all of you who have commented. I want to say that I am not looking down on you and trying to prove my faith, as Mike Meiers said. I only want to share that I have found something which makes my life complete. You are free not to agree, and I see that many of you do not, I am not trying to fight you as I said before. I knew when I came to this site that there would be much opposition, as my friend who does the online ministry told me, but that will not stop my willingness to share with you and hopefully show some of you that there might be another way of thinking in this world, other than atheist and false gods.
I will prove something to you so that you will not think of me as someone just mouthing off thoughtlessly about Christ the Lord. This Sunday I will ask my preacher about some of the questions you have mentioned; for instance, global warming being part of God’s plan (or not), proof that the Bible is God’s true word, and instances of the Bible condemning gays, women, etc. in certain verses. I will ask him these things. If I do so, will you give me a chance as someone who is serious in his faith and wants to share it with those who might be searching or unsure of their own beliefs?
    In Christ,
    Shawn

Shawn, just to echo what the wise wench has said, conversion doesn’t really work on this site, unless beer (& stippers, maybe some rum) is involved.
    .
The reason being, most of us are ex-christian, have been exposed to christianity for a long time, or at the least approached this belief system through a rational process (I say most; the aforementioned beer etc draws a lot of potential pirates like large drunken flies to honey).
    .
So, by all means present your argument for the bible, I just don’t think you will have much luck in a demographic that has heard it all before.

Now here’s where one of my problems lies with those who come preaching and looking for conversions.
The parroting of someone else’s interpretation of an old text which has been continually edited for the past 1800 years or so! No critical thinking required? Is it any wonder that the xtian God worshippers are referred to as “sheep” or “the flock”?
    .
Shawn I’m also wondering if you may have some idea how much of a hearing, those at your congregation, (or even better… an online access point for your particular brand of faith?), would give to any Pastafarians if they were to visit and argue the validity of “The Gospel of the FSM” Any thoughts on what the reception might be like?

    .
And what exactly makes your god any less false than ours or those of Hindus, Shintoists? Before you answer like ‘I’ve read it in the Bible, so it must be true.’ please remember that such logic can be turned against you with equal validity. Believer of religion X or Y could say he/she read in their scripture that it is they who are right and that it also explains to them how believers of other religions can be conned into false faiths, like your christianity. Believers of all faiths think they’re the only ones who’ve got it right. So what makes you think that in your case it is actually so?
And more genrally, without looking at your specific flavour of fairy tale to live by, would you agree that with the enormous variety in irreconcileable differences between religions that at the very least most of them must at utter bunk?

Shawn, go for it. Let us know what he/she says and if you do/do not accept the answers given and why.
    .
The Bible is much more complicated than the casual reader will ever know. I’m convinced that a novice cannot understand it because it requires knowing the context and local customs and tradiiions in effect in Biblical times. You do need to consult experts, but rarely are preachers qualified to do much more than deliver the message the head office has prepared. I had a friend who went off to study to become a Methodist minister but left after a few months because he wasn’t being taught anything, just being indoctrinated.
    .
I’m glad you found a religion that “works” for you, but that’s very different from finding a religion that is true. I have a friend who is a happy tree druid. She knows it is not true, its just a trip she is on for now, mostly just to acquire a different point of view on things. She’ll be back soon. I have a 6 year old nephew whose best friend is his stuffed animal Felix and who also looks forward to Christmas because if he is good Santa will bring him presents. He’ll grow up soon enough. Get my point?
    .
Comforting stories and moral guidance from a made up invisible guy are OK for kids, but grown ups tend to look squarely at the world and deal with it as it really is. For instance, the six day creation story, great for kids and primitive societies, but obviously silly if you bother to just look out the window of an airliner and taking the Rockies and the Sierra Nevada, the glaciers of Greenland, the Mississippi delta, etc. Or look at an ordinary globe and notice how the continents can be fit together.

Well, I’ve been reading some of Shawn’s posts. I figured that I might as well throw in my two cents on this one. I was raised Catholic, went to Sunday school, attended church on a fairly regular basis, and even went to church camps in the summer, but I’ve got to say that religion has offered me absolutely no facts on life. All the time i hear this “word of god” but its pointless to me. Maybe you’re cool with going with what some book says happened long ago, but to me, following the bible makes about as much sense as following a menu I found on the side of the street.

Also, if you’ve got some free time, watch the movie Zeitgeist. Its on google video. Just watch the first half hour or so. Lets call it a test of faith, but that movie has some facts that you might be interested to see.

Shawn, I know you keep saying that you don’t think your god will let us screw up his creation. But the fact is, we already have. It’s time to repair the damage now. People like you are the only thing in our way. By people like you, I mean stubborn people. People who believe that their god will come down from heaven or wherever said deity resides and stop us from messing up before it’s too late. Or people who just don’t think it’s important to take care of the planet. I’m 19 years old and I really would like Earth to still be around and inhabitable in 50 years. I want my kids to be able to go camping and stuff because we fixed the planet rather than continuing on this path of destruction and causing so much damage that the Earth is hostile to us. And that was a really long sentence, but I think you get my point.

To Rowdiest… you could actually wear your “pirate costume” on Halloween if you wore nude nylons and a sheer long sleeved body suit along with it. Then it would have the same effect but you’d be warm!
    .

Or you could go to Texas where Bearded Clam Admirer is (are you really in Texas, BCA? I’m your next door neighbor in New Mexico!) and show off your costume there! If you do, tell me in advance and I’m driving down there to take videos!! :)))

To Rowdiest again… never mind, I realized you’ll have to wear a winter coat if you show up in your “pirate costume” on Halloween. Let’s just say that global warming will DISAPPEAR COMPLETELY if you wear it!!!! :)))

Hey all. I’m just a bit curious. What is the Pastafarian belief in terms of Ozone thinning? I know that we have phased out CFCs officially, but I just want to know.

    @Steriotypical Evironmentalist
The light-hearted response would be to agree with Beth. As an environmetally obsessed person I think it was excellent to do away with CFCs. That one got through without conspiracy theories, pity that something went very wrong when some folks got their media spin around global warming.

The serious response would be that we need to convert to solar energy, wind energy, hydrogen-powered cars, etc. as soon as possible WITHOUT the oil moguls paying everyone off so that they can keep drilling dinosaur juice out of our precious Earth. We also need to stop burning carbon-based fuels, for FSM’s sake!
    .
The sick thing is that we already have all the technology to do all of the above, but politics and greed are preventing it. Makes me want to hurl… :(

@Anyone with a hybrid or electic car – Do you get a “holier-than-thou” feeling when seeing a Hummer, Corvette, or Mustang drive by? I certainly do.

My next car will be a hybrid, guaranteed. I’ve had my existing car (a sedan with decent mileage) for many years and I’ve figured out that it’s more environmentally correct to keep her running — cleanly — as long as I can, and then when she goes to FSM car heaven I will get the hybrid.
    .
Oh, and incidentally, Aristotle, Corvettes and Mustangs are EXEMPT from all emissions rules in the Book of Wench Beth! Ha ha!! They are the HAWT-est cars on the road, so they get to eat gas as much as they want! Yah!! Everything else has got to go.
    .
(I’m kidding, by the way. I am the most raging environmentalist on the planet, I think.)

    Hi Wench Beth :)
Just been reading a recent article about the US Navy being taken to task over whale deaths caused by sonar in California.
    .
    From Planet Ark
“LOS ANGELES – California coastal regulators and environmentalists sued the US Navy on Thursday saying that it has planned training exercises that could endanger whales. In separate lawsuits by the California Coastal Commission and a coalition led by the Natural Resources Defense Council, the Navy was accused of refusing to comply with regulations aimed at protecting marine life from sonar pulses used to detect underwater objects.”

That sux, Wench Nikkiee. I used to live there and have been on a few whale-watching trips. Once you’ve seen a whale in the wild, you never forget. I hope the environmentalists win their lawsuit. Once the whales are gone, they’re gone :(
    .
Do you know the CSN song called “Ode to the Last Whale”? It’s beautiful and it makes me cry. There’s also a Yes song called “Don’t Kill the Whale”. These guys were trying to raise public awareness in the 70’s… obviously the government hasn’t listened :(((

The numbers have just started to build up around OZ over the past 10yrs or so after getting alarmingly low so at least that’s been positive.
I am familiar with most CNS and Yes…but can’t place the songs of top of my head:(. Just don’t have my musical bent plugged in at the mo. Will have a look and listen later :))
After reading some of the comments from the Aussies today, seems I was being much more polite last night about this clash of war games & annual whale migration area last night. I did make a concerted effort not to use that F word that kept overiding my more coherent thoughts :)
    .
Must make a run to the local store before it closes. Country closing times here :)) Catch you later.

@ Wench Beth – What, cut and paste is not working? And now I cannot use contractions again – urgh! OK, about Tesla Motors – as I understand it, one of the requirements for ownership of the company was an agreement that they would never sell out. So, it will be very unlikely that the oil companies will be able to buy them out. And I asked hubby about this and he reassured me that the men involved already have contingents of body guards. So I have some hope that this will work.

@ WB – Wee hee! I’m all about pillaging and plundering! :))) I don’t know if this is on the website or not but one of the ways they show people how powerful the car is is to ask the passenger to change the radio station and then step on the “gas” – not one has yet been able to reach the stereo controls! Now that’s a sexy car…

An elaborate spoof on Intelligent Design, The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is neither too elaborate nor too spoofy to succeed in nailing the fallacies of ID. It's even wackier than Jonathan Swift's suggestion that the Irish eat their children as a way to keep them from being a burden, and it may offend just as many people, but Henderson, described elsewhere as a 25-year-old "out-of-work physics major," puts satire to the same serious use that Swift did. Oh, yes, it is very funny. -- Scientific American
